The clinic's purchasing list contains familiar product names. A national source lists a shortage or discontinuation under a different product identifier. The inventory lead needs to know whether the records describe the same item before asking a supplier about the next order. That comparison needs more than an ingredient match. Strength, formulation, manufacturer, and application number can determine whether the public record is relevant. Your own stock and replenishment history determine which verified supplier question deserves attention first. It does not need patient charts or an animal's treatment history. ## The flagship tool: drug supply review queue. **Your question:** “Which items on our purchasing list need a verified supplier answer before the next order, and which products were discontinued?” **What it collects:** FDA publishes [current and resolved animal drug shortages](https://www.fda.gov/animal-veterinary/product-safety-information/current-and-resolved-animal-drug-shortages) and a separate [discontinued animal drugs table](https://www.fda.gov/animal-veterinary/product-safety-information/discontinued-animal-drugs). These are public HTML tables. The design does not assume a drug-supply API or a live connection to distributor stock. The shortage table names the drug, proprietary product, firm, shortage state, dates, reason, and application number. FDA says sponsors and manufacturers provide most shortage information. The public listing therefore answers a source-status question. The inventory lead must obtain current availability from the supplier separately. The 2026.10.27 source check found an albendazole row for Valbazen Suspension 11.36%, application 110-048. It was listed in shortage with manufacturing delays as the reason. That dated example demonstrates product identification. It is not a current-stock assurance, a treatment recommendation, or a reason to order a substitute. | Record detail | Check before matching it to clinic inventory | | --- | --- | | Application number, shown as (A)NADA | Does the product master contain the same application identity? | | Proprietary name and firm | Is this the same product and manufacturer? | | Strength and dosage form | Are the formulations identical where those details are available? | | Shortage or resolved status | What does the source currently report, and when was it retrieved? | | Discontinuation posting | Does the notice concern this specific standing product? | | Clinic SKU and stock timestamp | Which inventory item is affected, and how current is the clinic export? | **The join to your records:** the purchasing owner supplies a minimal product master with SKU, formulation, strength, supplier, and stock information. The collector validates both FDA table structures before accepting a refresh. It matches application numbers first, then reviewed product aliases. Ingredient-only similarities remain uncertain. Strengths and dosage forms are never merged to complete a match. The queue preserves the public status and source date beside the private inventory timestamp. It compares each accepted source snapshot with the previous version and records changed entries. A missing row means “not listed in this source.” It cannot mean “available.” **Output and cadence:** the proposed daily purchasing queue separates exact matches, uncertain identities, stale source information, and supplier questions. A weekly product-master queue handles discontinuations. Staff set inventory coverage thresholds; the system uses those approved thresholds to order review tasks without creating purchase orders. **Who directs and who checks:** the purchasing owner selects the formulary and stock rules. The lead veterinarian checks product identity and clinical implications. The inventory lead confirms distributor availability and expected delivery through the clinic's approved process. Supplier answers retain their own dates and evidence. **Why it compounds:** the clinic keeps corrected aliases, rejected matches, supplier confirmations, actual replenishment delays, and differences between promised and observed delivery. That record survives a purchasing staff change. The national table does not contain your clinic's SKU mappings or supplier history. The proposed build has two working functions: public-source matching with snapshot history, followed by reconciliation with one approved inventory export. ## Two more tools. ### Regional animal surveillance briefing. “Which regional animal records should our clinical lead review this week?” [USDA APHIS mammal detections](https://www.aphis.usda.gov/livestock-poultry-disease/avian/avian-influenza/hpai-detections/mammals) include a downloadable table with state, county, collection and detection dates, strain, and species. North Carolina's [public rabies portal](https://celr.dph.ncdhhs.gov/rabies) supplies a separate county-and-species example. The briefing keeps source definitions and dates separate. A veterinarian decides whether a change warrants staff preparation. Surveillance observations do not measure population prevalence. Confidential or substituted locations must never be converted into a farm or household map. Each additional state source requires its own access and meaning checks. ### Shelter capacity planning. “How is intake changing at the shelter we already serve?” [Austin Animal Center intake data](https://data.austintexas.gov/Health-and-Community-Services/Austin-Animal-Center-Intakes/pyqf-r2dc) provide one local starting point for an aggregate species and intake chart. A clinic with a shelter relationship can compare that history with its own agreed service capacity. The source's found-address and animal-identity fields stay outside collection. The shelter partner confirms operational interpretation before the clinic changes staffing or service commitments. The result describes that shelter's records and cannot establish demand across every local veterinary practice. ## Public demo in review. The public version of the Animal drug supply record tool is in review. ## The limits that shape the design. Shortage, discontinuation, and recall are different states. A discontinued branded product cannot establish that every product with the same ingredient has disappeared. A resolved national record cannot establish that a particular distributor has stock today. The proposed collector respects FDA's published crawler delay and uses cached, bounded retrieval. HTML terms need confirmation before scheduling. A changed table header or failed request stops the refresh and labels the last successful data. It must not silently produce a clear purchasing queue from unreadable content. Clinical decisions, prescribing, substitution, and ordering remain with authorized people. Veterinary confidentiality and professional rules depend on jurisdiction; the public collector needs no clinical records. Begin with an approved product export and examples of known matching problems. Handoff checks should include a different strength, an uncertain brand alias, a resolved shortage, a discontinuation, an absent product, and an invalid source table.
