# Public signals for tree services and landscaping.

## The blind spot.

A maintenance account's next review depends on more than its place on a route. Recent planting dates, irrigation notes, and previous site observations can change what the account manager needs to check.

County drought history adds another piece of context. The useful question is which accounts deserve a closer look under your own review rules. A county percentage cannot tell you the condition of a customer's soil or plants.

The [tree service and landscaping overview](/for/tree-services-and-landscaping) covers estimate handoffs, service updates, and change orders. This page adds public environmental signals to preparation for existing accounts. Qualified staff retain plant-care and field decisions.

## The flagship tool: drought-to-account site review queue.

**Your question:** “Which recent plantings and maintenance accounts should our horticulture lead look at this week, and what evidence puts them on the list?”

The proposed function connects county observations with planting and maintenance records you already own. The landscape operations manager selects accounts and review rules. The horticulture lead checks site facts before changing care.

### What the county data says.

The [U.S. Drought Monitor county service](https://droughtmonitor.unl.edu/DmData/DataDownload/WebServiceInfo.aspx) returns weekly rows with county identifiers, map dates, category percentages, and validity dates. Keep the publication date separate from the date your tool retrieved it.

A bounded check on 2026.10.27 returned eight weeks for Wake County, North Carolina. The latest returned map date was 2026.10.20. Its D2-or-worse percentage was 99.47 percent of county area. That is the scale of the observation.

Traditional threshold percentages overlap. D2-or-worse is part of D1-or-worse, so the tool must not sum those columns. A chart should state whether it shows thresholds or separate categories.

| Source or company field | Purpose in the review queue |
| --- | --- |
| County FIPS | Match the correct county without losing leading zeroes |
| Map and validity dates | Preserve the public observation's age |
| Drought threshold history | Show persistence and changes between weeks |
| Internal account identifier | Connect context to an authorized account |
| Planting date | Apply the company's approved review rule |
| Last site observation | Separate checked facts from assumptions |
| Irrigation notes | Identify questions that still need an answer |

### The join to your records.

Start with approved account counties, planting dates, service plans, and field observations. Warranty terms may inform which records staff need to review. They do not allow the function to decide liability.

Match each account's confirmed county to a county-week row. Keep uncertain geography out of automatic ranking until someone resolves it. A ZIP code should not silently substitute for a checked county assignment.

The manager defines review conditions using drought duration, category change, planting age, and missing site facts. These are company operating choices to test. They are not a scientific plant-stress score supplied by the public dataset.

An illustrative queue item might show a recent planting whose last site observation predates a change in county conditions. It would ask the horticulture lead to verify irrigation and current site condition. It would not prescribe water or declare a warranty issue.

### What the account manager receives.

The weekly queue shows account reference, county trend, last inspection date, missing information, and the rule that triggered review. Each row links to the source observation and the relevant company record.

The horticulture lead checks soil, species, local watering restrictions, and the approved care plan before recommending a change. The account manager confirms the service responsibility. A source match cannot add work to a customer's agreement.

If the public feed is unavailable, the queue names that failure and the date of its last usable observation. If an account lacks a planting date, it shows that gap. Missing facts cannot become evidence that no review is needed.

### The history your company retains.

Record the site observations made after each review, accepted irrigation corrections, plant outcomes, service effort, and rejected alerts. Preserve the reason a reviewer dismissed a candidate.

Over time, that record lets the company examine which broad signals warranted attention for its own plantings. A poor relationship is a useful finding too. The system should not retain only cases that appeared to support its rules.

The first design can be one working function for county-to-account matching and the review queue. A separate condition-history layer can be scoped as a second function when the account records justify it.

## Two more tools.

### Storm capacity and account exposure board.

“Where should production review available inspection capacity after a relevant weather alert?” The [National Weather Service alert service](https://api.weather.gov/alerts/active?area=NC) supplies changing alert records. Some alerts have no polygon, so the design needs a zone-code fallback.

A proposed board matches alert areas to authorized accounts and service territories. It separates active alerts, expired alerts, and customer-confirmed requests. Crew availability can be displayed without making a booking.

Every matched account remains “exposure, condition unconfirmed.” A weather alert does not establish that a tree is dangerous. The arborist and production lead decide inspection, access, equipment, and any deployment. For a removal-only company, this may be the better first function.

### Quarantine change and haul-review brief.

“Does this planned debris or nursery-stock movement need another compliance check?” State plant-health publications provide a starting point. Verified examples include Pennsylvania's spotted lanternfly material and North Carolina's spongy moth pages.

The research did not establish a current machine-readable county-boundary feed for either example. The proposed workflow therefore combines source-page changes with staff-verified designations. It matches origin, destination, material, and planned movement date to the reviewed record.

Unknown geography, material classification, or source age stops the checklist for human review. The tool never issues a transport permit or states that a load is cleared. New states require separately checked rules and sources.

## Try the public demo.

[Open County drought history](/tools/county-drought-history)

Choose a county to inspect recent drought thresholds and dates. For landscaping, the next questions concern planting date, species, irrigation facts, and the last site check. Those private account facts remain outside the demo.

The public design needs no customer name, address, warranty record, photograph, or visitor geolocation. The private queue adds your account history and review decisions. County conditions alone remain insufficient for a care recommendation.

## The limits that shape the design.

Drought data does not authorize watering, override restrictions, diagnose disease, or decide warranty responsibility. Alerts do not authorize tree work, utility clearance, rigging, or emergency direction.

The [landscape maintenance scope guide](/articles/landscape-maintenance-website-service-scope) explains how to state recurring work accurately. Use the accepted account agreement inside the private tool. A review flag must not silently expand that agreement.

## Build the function your company owns.

Scale With Search defines the counties, account fields, review conditions, responsible roles, and acceptance checks. Your company keeps its dated observations, corrections, operating instructions, and run receipts.

Each working function starts from $7,500. Begin with one maintenance territory and records the horticulture lead can check against actual site observations.
