# Public project intelligence for small fabricators.

## The blind spot

A permit description can mention a steel stair, railing, balcony, or platform before your shop sees a request for a price. It can also describe steel being removed and replaced with another material. Both records may match the same keyword.

The owner needs to know which descriptions fit the shop's work and which deserve no further estimating effort. That requires sentence-level scope review, project identity, and a record of what earlier matches became.

The [manufacturer and fabricator overview](/for/small-manufacturers-and-fabricators) covers RFQ registers, controlled specifications, and supplier updates. This intelligence layer helps find external research candidates. It does not choose a drawing revision, accept a tolerance, or release production.

## The flagship tool: fabrication permit watch

**Your question:** “Which jobs around here mention the stairs, rails, or platforms we make, and who is building them?”

**What it collects:** start with one verified permit jurisdiction. The [Chicago Building Permits dataset](https://data.cityofchicago.org/Buildings/Building-Permits/ydr8-5enu) supplies permit identifiers, issue dates, work descriptions, and other project fields. The public demonstration uses a deliberately narrow field selection.

A 2026.10.27 check returned permit B200516117, issued on 2026.10.26. The description said “LIMITED REPAIR (25% OR LESS) FOR STEEL EXTERIOR STAIRWAY.” The remaining scope text described one stairway and a landing. That is a specific repair signal, not evidence of a new commercial stair package.

Keep the matching passage beside the category assigned to it. A shop focused on new assemblies may reject that repair. Another shop may investigate it. The owner's accepted work classes control the decision; the word “steel” does not.

The research also verified [Raleigh's Building Permits layer](https://services.arcgis.com/v400IkDOw1ad7Yad/ArcGIS/rest/services/Building_Permits/FeatureServer/0). Its published nonresidential class is `Non-Residential`. The description field is limited to 100 characters, so a short match cannot establish the full scope.

A recent Raleigh sample concerned a childcare inspection. The working endpoint was evidence of access, but that row did not demonstrate fabrication demand. Preserve this distinction when testing a new city: accessible data and useful project matches are separate acceptance questions.

**The join to your records:** normalize jurisdiction, permit number, application and issue dates, status, and source reference. Use a parcel identifier where the source supplies one. Review address matches before clustering permits into a single project.

Match scope sentences against the shop's accepted products, materials, order sizes, and service radius. Separate repair, removal, replacement, and new installation. Route an incomplete description to the estimator rather than treating the missing words as favorable evidence.

Attach reviewed contractor-company identities and existing relationship notes privately. Similar names do not establish the same business. A permit's company field also does not prove who will buy the fabrication package.

**Output and cadence:** collect daily and prepare a weekly project queue. Each entry shows the exact matched passage, project stage, source date, category, uncertainty, and the estimator's next question. Approved new-construction matches can receive an earlier review alert.

A monthly company view can summarize verified contractor appearances by accepted scope. It should describe observed permit history, without claiming that a contractor has spare capacity or is seeking another supplier.

**Who directs and who checks:** the sales lead selects product families and geography. An estimator checks scope and material meaning. The account owner verifies identity, relationship context, and whether a commercial conversation fits.

**Why it compounds:** the shop keeps which descriptions led to real RFQs, the observed interval from permit to inquiry, and which contractors bought outside fabrication. Rejected matches remain part of the record. The next review can recognize a recurring false positive without relying on one salesperson's memory.

Scope two functions: permit collection with project history, then scope matching and a review queue. Each additional city requires a separately checked source adapter.

## Two more tools

### Recall-to-component review

“Do any recalled products touch our parts, assemblies, or shop tools?” The [CPSC recall interface](https://www.cpsc.gov/Recalls/CPSC-Recalls-Application-Program-Interface-API-Information) supplies product notices with identifiers and official links. Match populated model or UPC values to a controlled inventory or assembly register first.

The research found two failure cases worth testing. A structured hazard field conflicted with the title in one record. Another request returned an error object inside a JSON array. Neither should be interpreted as a clean safety result or an empty search.

For a bounded register, scope one function that prepares candidate matches and explicit source exceptions. Purchasing checks product identity. The quality or safety lead reads the official notice and determines the response under the company's process.

A consumer-product feed is not a complete industrial-equipment register. An unmatched item is not certified safe. The tool cannot authorize a repair, material substitution, or shipment hold.

### Repeat assembly buyer watch

“Which organizations keep buying assemblies like ours?” [USAspending award records](https://api.usaspending.gov/docs/endpoints) can supply descriptions, buyer organizations, recipients, identifiers, and dates. Group relevant historical records only after checking that their language fits the shop's processes.

Join accepted descriptions to private material, order-size, certification, and capacity limits. Keep the buying office distinct from the award recipient. An existing award does not establish an open subcontract package or available production budget.

Scope two functions for a standalone collector and review queue, or one added function where reviewed award history already exists. The estimator verifies capability fit. The account owner checks relationships before deciding what to investigate.

The owned history captures corrected assembly terms, qualification decisions, actual RFQs, and reasons a buyer was unsuitable. It should never estimate a competitor's unit price or financial condition from award totals.

## Try the public demo

[Open Fabrication work in permits](/tools/fabrication-permits)

Select a supported Chicago community area and fabrication term. The public view shows bounded permit evidence with dates, identifiers, short descriptions, and coarse location context. The result should retain the difference between repair and new construction.

The demonstration proves source retrieval and scope classification. It does not prove that a package is still open. The private function adds your capabilities, contractor relationships, project matches, and estimator decisions.

Chicago's required derivative-use disclaimer belongs on the public tool. Owner names, house numbers, contractor contacts, personal details inside descriptions, and visitor searches must stay out of its public records.

## The limits that shape the design

A permit is evidence of recorded work. It is not a purchase order, a technical specification, or permission to contact an individual. A later outreach process needs its own review and authorization. The research queue sends nothing.

Keep drawings and customer specifications private. The [customer-drawing guide](/articles/manufacturer-private-drawings-website) addresses that separate website and file-handling decision. Finding a public project should not expose the private documents received during a later RFQ.

## Build the function your shop owns

Scale With Search scopes the source territory, material rules, reviewer roles, and handoff checks. Each function starts from $7,500. Your shop keeps the records, corrected matches, decisions, and operating instructions.

Acceptance should include a repair outside your scope, steel replaced with another material, a truncated description, a duplicate project, and a source error. The estimator must be able to inspect why each result reached the queue.
