# Public storm signals for roofing companies.

## The blind spot.

A hail report can help your operations manager decide where to review inspection capacity. It cannot identify which roofs were damaged. Your own inspected jobs supply a different kind of evidence.

The useful question connects those two records: which public reports led to relevant findings in your service area? Keep no-damage visits and rejected matches beside confirmed findings. Otherwise the history records only the cases that support an assumption.

The [roofing company overview](/for/roofing-companies) covers estimates, adjuster-update preparation, and review replies. This page adds public weather and project evidence before those tasks. It makes no insurance or property-damage determination.

## The flagship tool: storm response evidence board.

**Your question:** “Where should we prepare inspection capacity, and which storm reports have held up against our own field findings?”

The proposed board connects dated weather reports with service territories and inspection history. Operations chooses the territories and review rules. The field supervisor controls site access, safety, and inspection decisions.

### What a storm-report row says.

The [NOAA Storm Prediction Center report archive](https://www.spc.noaa.gov/climo/reports/) publishes daily files for reported hazards. The CSV rows include time, reported magnitude, location, county, state, and coordinates. Combined files have separate sections for tornado, wind, and hail reports.

A check on 2026.10.27 opened the 2026.04.26 hail file. Its first row listed Leonard in Fannin County, Texas, a report time, coordinates, and a size field. The file proves that a weather report was recorded. It supplies no inspection finding for a customer's roof.

The 2026.10.26 combined file returned the three hazard headers with no report rows. That is a valid empty file. The tool must distinguish it from a failed download or an unreadable response.

| Record element | What the board must preserve |
| --- | --- |
| Source report day | The file's reporting period |
| Hazard section | Whether the row describes hail, wind, or tornado reports |
| Time and coordinates | Evidence for matching and duplicate review |
| Reported magnitude | Original units and unknown-value handling |
| Retrieval time | How old the company's copy is |
| Preliminary status | The limits of the current report |

Normalize source-day boundaries before displaying local time. Keep the original time available for review. Report counts must never be relabeled as unique storms, damaged homes, or available roofing jobs.

### The join to your operation.

The company supplies its service-zone boundaries and authorized inspection records. The collector checks daily report files more frequently around relevant events, subject to source limits. It preserves revisions and deduplicates repeated observations carefully.

Match report location and time to service territory first. Do not draw a measured damage area around a point report. A nearby report can create a review question without establishing the conditions at a particular roof.

Connect completed inspections through internal job identifiers. Retain inspection date, roof materials when recorded, confirmed findings, no-damage outcomes, and match uncertainty. A broad geographic match must remain distinguishable from stronger evidence.

The [NCEI Storm Events archive](https://www.ncei.noaa.gov/pub/data/swdi/stormevents/csvfiles/) supplies later historical records for reconciliation. Its event and episode identifiers differ from the preliminary report structure. The design compares time, hazard, and area rather than assuming a shared event key.

### What the operations manager receives.

The morning board shows reported locations, magnitudes, source age, and the relevant service areas. Available inspection capacity appears alongside the evidence. The manager decides whether any capacity review warrants action.

A monthly comparison shows the reports, inspected sample, confirmed findings, and unresolved matches. The inspected sample needs its own label. Your crews did not inspect every property covered by a county label or service-zone boundary.

Source failures remain visible. If the latest retrieval fails, a dated prior result can stay available with a stale-data notice. It cannot silently appear as a fresh all-clear.

### The history that becomes yours.

Your company retains which report matches were useful, where they misled reviewers, and what inspections found. Callbacks, access problems, and no-damage visits belong in that history too.

This record can help test future preparation rules against local experience. It does not guarantee demand or prove that a weather report caused a roof condition. The value is a checkable comparison that survives staff turnover.

The first design has two working functions: event collection and normalization, and inspection-history reconciliation. Public report discovery can be demonstrated before connecting private job records.

## Two more tools.

### Public roof project stage watch.

“Which public roof projects deserve research before a construction bid appears?” Procurement notices and public facilities documents can describe design selection, construction, addenda, awards, or inspections. Those stages need different labels.

A verified NYC City Record example concerned special inspection for a facade and roof restoration. It appeared under public comment on contract awards. A verified school notice requested designer qualifications for a partial roof replacement.

Neither example establishes an open roofing construction package. A proposed weekly stage board preserves the notice type and project identifier. Your estimator checks current procurement documents, qualifications, and scope before committing bid effort. Each public-owner source needs its own access check.

### Installation weather review.

“Which planned installations need a fresh weather discussion?” The [National Weather Service API](https://www.weather.gov/documentation/services-web-api) provides forecast periods that can be matched to authorized job areas and dates.

The private function compares forecasts with the selected roof system's approved instructions and company review rules. Missing instructions stop the comparison. A supervisor checks actual conditions before work; the tool does not certify safe access or move a crew.

## Try the public demo.

[Open Storm report explorer](/tools/storm-report-explorer)

Choose a state, county, and report date to inspect public report counts and reported magnitudes. Read the output as preliminary weather evidence. The private board adds service zones, available slots, inspections, and accepted corrections.

The public design excludes free-text report comments because they can contain household details. It accepts no home address, insurance record, inspection photograph, or claim history. Report counts remain report counts.

## The limits that shape the design.

Weather evidence cannot establish roof damage, coverage, claim value, or permission to inspect. The function does not harvest disaster contacts or send canvassing messages. Field decisions remain with qualified staff and authorized site access.

For customer-facing wording, the [storm-page guide](/articles/roofing-storm-damage-landing-page) explains how to describe a credible inspection request. Keep public weather evidence separate from statements about a particular customer's property.

## Build the function your company owns.

Scale With Search scopes the territory, report handling, private record matches, reviewer roles, and acceptance checks. Your company keeps the observations, rejected matches, corrections, operating instructions, and run receipts.

Each working function starts from $7,500. Bring one service territory and an inspection export that preserves findings as your staff recorded them.
