That task requires dated evidence, consistent vehicle labels, and a controlled connection to the firm's matters. A complaint count alone cannot answer the legal question. It can identify a component that merits research. The attorney then checks the agency record, the vehicle, and the evidence already held by the firm. This page adds public product evidence without creating a victim list or sending case information to a public search service. ## The flagship tool: vehicle defect signal watch **Your question:** “Which vehicle components are drawing new complaints, and do any of our existing files involve the same vehicle and component?” The [NHTSA datasets and API directory](https://www.nhtsa.gov/nhtsa-datasets-and-apis) provides the starting sources. Complaints, recalls, and investigations represent different kinds of records. The function must keep their meanings separate throughout collection and review. Complaint records can include component labels, incident and filing dates, and reported crash, fire, injury, or death fields. Those are reported attributes. They cannot become confirmed findings or an estimate of the rate of failure among vehicles on the road. A check on 2026.10.27 returned four campaigns for that vehicle combination. Each campaign has its own identifier and component description. A model-level result does not establish whether a particular vehicle is affected or whether a remedy was completed. The [investigation bulk file](https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/ffdd/inv/FLAT_INV.zip) provides a separate input for agency investigation activity. Its documented layout must be checked before matching records. Opening, closing, and changing an investigation all deserve accurate treatment. An investigation is not a conclusion that a claim is valid. **What it collects:** the product-liability partner selects a bounded watchlist of makes, models, years, and component categories. The proposed function keeps weekly source snapshots and a record of revisions. It normalizes aliases through an attorney-reviewed map. Uncertain component matches stay unresolved. Complaint totals need careful interpretation. Filing date differs from incident date, and more than one component can appear in a record. The comparison states what it counts and how it handles revisions. It must not add overlapping component counts and call the result a number of injured people. **The join to your records:** a separate process inside the firm's approved environment matches vehicle fields and reviewed component labels to authorized matter references. Only vehicle search fields go to the public service. Names, injuries, photographs, medical records, incident narratives, and matter identifiers stay out of upstream requests. **Output and cadence:** prepare a weekly research queue showing changed complaint counts, recall campaigns, and investigation status where verified. After a scheduled check detects a relevant change, prepare an internal flag for matching open matters. No function determines causation, damages, deadlines, representation, or litigation strategy. **Why it compounds:** the firm keeps dated observations, corrected vehicle aliases, rejected matches, research decisions, and the reasons a source mattered to an existing file. Historical agency data may support later reconstruction. The firm's own review record preserves what its team saw and decided at the time. Scope two functions: versioned public-source collection with component normalization, then private matter matching and review. Validate the public collector before connecting confidential records. ## Two more tools ### Consumer product recall watch “Which product hazards should the team understand before another related inquiry arrives?” The [CPSC recall API](https://www.cpsc.gov/Recalls/CPSC-Recalls-Application-Program-Interface-API-Information) provides product, model, hazard, date, and remedy information. A bounded function collects the categories the partner selects and prepares a weekly reading queue. Keep the official notice and any uncertain product match beside the summary. A recall establishes a reason to read the source, not a conclusion about injury, causation, or a particular person's claim. The firm retains its reviewed product vocabulary and training decisions. The tool acquires no purchaser identities and does not turn a product list into a search for injured people. ### Crash geography board “What does the published crash record show about the areas we serve?” [Chicago Traffic Crashes](https://data.cityofchicago.org/resource/85ca-t3if.json) can support a monthly aggregate view after its fields and coverage are validated for the chosen comparison. Keep broad geographic totals separate from the firm's intake counts. The partner can examine practice coverage and education questions without exposing individual incidents. Publication lag, missing fields, and counting definitions must remain visible. They create no accident-victim lists, identify no complainants, and acquire no DMV ownership records. Any later communication design requires its own jurisdiction-specific review by the firm. A rising complaint total has no vehicle-population denominator here. It cannot establish comparative safety, causation, or expected recovery. A missing campaign cannot clear a vehicle as safe. Medical evidence stays inside a separately authorized confidential process. Before handoff, test ambiguous vehicle aliases, overlapping components, closed investigations, and unavailable sources. Require the reviewer to trace every summary to the underlying record.
