# Public project signals for door and fence contractors.

## The blind spot.

A permit containing “fence” can describe a temporary construction barrier. A garage reference can belong to a wider alteration with no open door package. Counting either as a ready job gives the estimator a list without a reason to pursue it.

The useful question is more precise: which newly recorded projects fit the work your crews perform, and what still needs checking? Your own bid history can answer the second half. It records builders, scopes, buying stages, and reasons an apparently suitable job was declined.

The [garage door and fencing office page](/for/garage-door-and-fencing-contractors) covers service-call briefs, site-measure handoffs, and work-order updates. Public-project intelligence gives the estimator a separate research queue before a verified job reaches those workflows.

## The flagship tool: new-project scope watch.

**Your question:** “Which builders have a project where our doors or fencing may still fit, and which permits are noise?”

**What it collects:** the [Raleigh Building Permits Past 31 Days layer](https://services.arcgis.com/v400IkDOw1ad7Yad/arcgis/rest/services/Building_Permits_Past_31_Days/FeatureServer/0) provides permit numbers, work classes, issue dates, and proposed-work descriptions. The rolling window makes retained snapshots part of the design. The company keeps dated observations instead of expecting a current feed to preserve its research history.

The 2026.10.27 query returned an alteration record describing exterior renovation and replacement work. Its description was short. That supports a request to inspect the scope, not an assumption about garage doors or a complete material schedule.

| Source field or record | What the estimator can establish |
| --- | --- |
| `permitnum` and source jurisdiction | A stable permit identity for duplicate checks |
| `workclass` | The publisher's work category |
| `issueddate` | When the permit was issued, separate from purchasing stage |
| `proposedworkdescription` | Published wording that may support or contradict the proposed job category |
| Prior company bid and account records | Whether the builder or project already has a reviewed relationship |

The [NYC DOB NOW approved-permit feed](https://data.cityofnewyork.us/resource/rbx6-tga4.json?$limit=1) supplies a second classification lesson. The source review found a fence description explicitly identifying construction fencing. The collector must separate temporary barriers from permanent fence candidates rather than treating every keyword hit alike.

**The join to your records:** collect permit changes daily and identify each record by jurisdiction plus permit number. Group revisions before counting projects. Classify permanent fence, temporary barrier, garage or door candidate, pool or accessory structure, and uncertain. Keep the original wording beside the proposed category.

Match contractor company names through reviewed aliases to the firm's builder accounts. A similar business name cannot establish the match by itself. Where parcel identifiers are absent, a reviewer checks the address relationship. The public project then connects to past estimates, accepted scopes, and known buying stages.

**Output and cadence:** a weekly shortlist shows permit age, source wording, classification, account match, and the next estimator question. A monthly territory card can add the [Census Building Permits Survey](https://www.census.gov/construction/bps/index.html). Its county series distinguishes structure sizes, buildings, and authorized housing units. Those figures provide construction context, without becoming counts of fence jobs.

**Who directs and who checks:** the sales manager sets travel limits and accepted job types. The estimator checks scope and whether purchasing remains open before anyone contacts a builder. Production retains control of crew capacity, materials, and dates.

**Why it compounds:** the company stores rejected classifications, corrected builder identities, permit-to-bid timing, and actual estimate outcomes. Temporary-barrier false positives become reusable exclusions. The owner can review which signals created useful conversations and which consumed estimating effort.

The first build has two working functions: permit collection with snapshot history and scope classification, followed by a reviewed queue joined to builder accounts.

## Two more tools.

### Installed-opener recall match.

“Which recorded installations need a technician to check an official recall?” The [CPSC recall interface](https://www.cpsc.gov/Recalls/CPSC-Recalls-Application-Program-Interface-API-Information) provides product notices that can be compared with an authorized installation register.

The match uses exact model, UPC, and manufacture-date conditions where the notice requires them. A missing label becomes an evidence request. It cannot become a finding that the installation is unaffected. The service manager reviews the queue; a qualified technician confirms applicability and the manufacturer's instructions. Safety notices remain separate from promotional messages.

### Storm exposure for service accounts.

“Which existing commercial gate or door accounts need an operations check?” [National Weather Service alerts](https://www.weather.gov/documentation/services-web-api) can be matched to authorized account locations using alert polygons or geographic zones.

An alert with no polygon still needs zone review. The output names the official event, affected account, source age, and expiry. Operations checks actual conditions before changing appointments. Weather exposure cannot establish damage, repair scope, or safe access.

## Try the public demo.

[Open Permit scope check](/tools/permit-scope-check)

The public demonstration starts with Raleigh and a bounded date window. It is designed to separate work-description categories and show redacted examples. An uncertain description should remain uncertain. Source dates and coverage belong beside the counts so an empty result cannot imply a city has no relevant work.

The public view demonstrates classification. The private function adds your builder accounts, previous estimates, accepted corrections, and buying-stage checks. Residential street addresses, owner names, personal contacts, and residential permit identifiers stay out of the public output. Small groups need suppression rather than revealing a single home's project.

## The limits that shape the design.

Permits establish recorded project activity. They cannot establish available purchasing scope, an agreed budget, or permission to contact a homeowner. A pool permit cannot settle the applicable fence requirement. The separate guide to [local fence permit FAQs](/articles/fence-contractor-permit-website-faq) explains how to tie a public website answer to the governing authority.

Raleigh's redistribution terms still need confirmation before public release. Each additional city needs a verified feed, field definitions, status meanings, and reuse check. A response cap is a retrieval limit, not permission to issue unlimited requests. An unsupported county must say “coverage unavailable.”

The system performs no homeowner enrichment or assessment of a builder's creditworthiness. It sends no email, text, or call. Staff review any later business contact under the applicable channel rules. Technical repair advice, boundary decisions, code interpretation, and hardware selection remain with qualified people.

## Build the function your company owns.

Begin with one supported territory, a small builder-account export, and examples your estimator has already accepted or rejected. Acceptance checks should include a temporary fence, an unrelated door reference, a duplicate permit, a missing parcel key, and a failed refresh.

Scale With Search scopes the collection, account matching, review output, and training as working functions. Each function starts from $7,500. Your company keeps the snapshots, estimator corrections, buying-stage history, and operating instructions.
