# Public signals for foundation and home repair.

## The blind spot.

Your inspection calendar shows booked work. It may not show whether a change in regional conditions deserves a capacity review. Answering that question requires dated public observations beside your own inquiry history.

Start with the question your operations manager can test: did calls change after the county's drought classification changed? Include quiet periods and inspections that found no relevant problem. A useful comparison must retain evidence that challenges the assumption.

The [foundation and home repair overview](/for/foundation-and-home-repair) covers inspection handoffs, project updates, and warranty inquiries. This page adds public environmental context before those office tasks. Structural diagnosis and repair decisions stay with qualified people.

## The flagship tool: drought and inspection capacity watch.

**Your question:** “Is the county drying out enough to review inspection slots, and does our own call history support that decision?”

The proposed tool produces a weekly territory card. It places county drought history, your inquiry counts, and available inspection slots in one dated view. It prepares a staffing discussion without predicting damage to homes.

### What a drought row contains.

The [U.S. Drought Monitor county service](https://droughtmonitor.unl.edu/DmData/DataDownload/WebServiceInfo.aspx) returns county identifiers, map dates, category percentages, and validity dates. The source publishes weekly; your tool should retain the returned date instead of labeling every retrieval as today's conditions.

A check on 2026.10.27 returned eight weeks for Wake County, North Carolina. Its latest returned map date was 2026.10.20. The D2-or-worse value was 99.47 percent of county area. That describes a county classification, not moisture beneath any selected house.

The traditional statistics overlap. D2-or-worse is already inside D1-or-worse. Adding D0 through D4 produces a misleading total. Preserve the source's statistics format and label the displayed thresholds explicitly.

| Field | What the weekly review needs |
| --- | --- |
| Five-digit county FIPS | A stable county match, including leading zeroes |
| Map date | The observation's position in the history |
| Validity interval | The period represented by that publication |
| D1-or-worse and D2-or-worse | Separate cumulative area percentages |
| Retrieval time | Evidence of when the company collected the record |

### The join to your records.

The operations manager chooses counties and the inquiry categories worth comparing. The first private export needs county, inquiry date, service category, and a stable internal reference. The public comparison can use aggregate counts rather than household details.

Match county and week to recorded inquiries and inspection availability. Keep requested visits separate from confirmed bookings. Preserve cancellations and missing county assignments so incomplete office records cannot quietly change the apparent pattern.

The review should distinguish an observation from an operating rule. A few coincident changes do not justify a forecast. Test any proposed threshold against the company's retained history before using it to recommend capacity changes.

An optional weather supplement uses the [National Weather Service API](https://www.weather.gov/documentation/services-web-api) for approved service-area points. Forecast periods stay separate from historical drought observations. A forecast is neither measured rainfall nor a countywide soil reading.

### What the inspection lead receives.

The weekly card shows recent drought history, changes between weeks, actual inquiry counts, available slots, and missing information. A daily supplement can flag forecast changes for review. The inspection lead checks bookings and field conditions before changing staffing.

An unavailable feed produces a source-failure notice. A successful response with no usable observation produces a coverage question. Neither state should appear as normal conditions or low demand.

The design has two working functions: public county history and a private inquiry-capacity comparison. Begin with one territory and a usable office export. Additional source connectors belong in the written scope.

### The history your company retains.

Store conditions as known at the time, subsequent inquiries, inspection findings, no-problem visits, and staffing overrides. Record why the inspection lead accepted or rejected each recommendation.

That history can test whether the comparison helps your company. It may reveal that a proposed relationship is weak or varies by county. Keeping that result is as useful as keeping a pattern that merits further study.

## Two more tools.

### Soil context inspection brief.

“What public ground-context questions should the inspector take to this authorized job?” [USDA Soil Data Access](https://sdmdataaccess.nrcs.usda.gov/) provides soil map-unit and component records through read-only queries.

A verified Raleigh-area query returned component percentages and drainage attributes, including a null drainage value for an urban-land component. The brief must show the missing value. It must not interpret a blank field as favorable drainage.

Match an authorized job location to the mapped unit, then retain the component mix and source edition. An inspector decides which site questions deserve investigation. Map-unit proportions are not a boring log or a measured soil sample beneath a building.

This can be one preparation function after source-use checks. It does not choose a repair method, infer movement from a map, or interpret engineering documents.

### Flood-map evidence card.

“Which mapped flood records need a qualified review for this project?” FEMA's National Flood Hazard Layer supplies mapped zone attributes and map identifiers. A private card can preserve the source version and location uncertainty beside an authorized job reference.

Commercial redistribution conditions remain unresolved in this design. Keep this extension out of the initial public tool until those conditions are checked. A mapped zone cannot explain seepage, establish structural cause, or determine warranty coverage.

## Try the public demo.

[Open County drought history](/tools/county-drought-history)

Choose a county to inspect dated drought percentages. The public view demonstrates the evidence layer. The private function adds your inquiry history, review rules, open slots, and accepted corrections.

The demo is designed to need no street address, geolocation permission, inspection photograph, or customer list. Its date labels should remain visible when the newest returned observation precedes today.

## The limits that shape the design.

County drought does not diagnose a foundation. Soil maps do not establish actual fill, bearing capacity, or repair quantities. Flood mapping does not certify that a property is free from flood risk.

The tool makes no insurance, lending, housing, or warranty decision. It does not build a household distress list or send weather-based sales messages. Qualified staff control technical interpretation and site access.

For the separate customer-facing request path, use the [inspection request page guide](/articles/foundation-inspection-request-website-page). Its job is to collect reported concerns and logistics. Public environmental context should not turn that request into a diagnosis.

## Build the function your company owns.

Scale With Search scopes the county collector, private comparison, reviewer steps, and handoff checks. Your company keeps the dated records, rules, corrections, and instructions for running the work.

Each working function starts from $7,500. Bring the counties you serve, one inquiry export, and the capacity question your inspection lead wants to test.
