# Public evidence for family and defense firm planning.

## The blind spot

A managing partner deciding where to add coverage needs more than the matters that reached the firm last month. Public activity and the firm's intake answer different questions. Comparing them can expose a category the practice should investigate, a staffing constraint, or a gap in its own records.

The comparison needs careful definitions. An arrest is not a conviction, a court filing, or a person seeking private counsel. A police district is not automatically the court area your attorneys cover. Treat those distinctions as requirements for the tool.

The [family and criminal defense firm page](/for/family-and-criminal-defense-law-firms) covers preparation from authorized matter records. The intelligence layer adds aggregate planning evidence and source-change review. It keeps legal judgment with the responsible attorney.

## The flagship tool: charge-mix demand watch

**Your question:** “Which charge categories are changing around the courts we cover, and does our intake show the same pattern?”

Start with [Chicago Arrests](https://data.cityofchicago.org/resource/dpt3-jri9.json). A bounded check on 2026.10.27 returned an arrest date, statute, charge description, charge type, and class. Those fields can support a reviewed category map. They do not establish what happened later in court.

The map translates source codes into the practice categories the partner approves. Unmapped statutes stay in an unresolved group. If a record carries several charges, the counting method must state whether it counts records or charge entries. It cannot switch between those measures across months.

**The join to your records:** collect a bounded source extract, normalize dates and charge fields, and aggregate by the approved geography and month. Separately aggregate the firm's inquiries using an attorney-approved practice taxonomy. Compare the two tables through category and period. Names, allegations, case identifiers, and contact details are unnecessary for that comparison.

An inquiry may arrive after the month of an arrest. It may concern an event outside the selected geography. Record those mismatches instead of presenting the ratio as market share. Public arrest totals cannot reveal which matters reached another firm or whether anyone wanted representation.

**Output and cadence:** collect weekly and prepare a monthly planning table. Show the source's latest covered date, each category's public count, the firm's comparable inquiry count, and unresolved mappings. Include prior periods only when their definitions remain compatible. A change in the category map needs a visible version note.

| Planning-table field | What the reviewer learns |
| --- | --- |
| Source period | Which months the public feed actually covers |
| Public category count | Activity under the stated counting method |
| Firm inquiry count | Recorded inquiries under the firm's own definition |
| Coverage mismatch | Geography, timing, or category differences |
| Review decision | Investigate, revise intake labels, or leave staffing unchanged |

**Who directs and who checks:** the managing partner chooses served areas and practice categories. An operations lead checks the mapping and totals. The partner decides whether the evidence warrants a staffing review. The function cannot hire, accept a matter, change advertising, or contact anyone.

**Why it compounds:** the firm keeps its category definitions, corrections, intake mix, travel burden, and decisions across reporting periods. Later reviews can compare what the partner expected with what the firm recorded. That history is specific to the practice, even when the underlying public counts are widely available.

Scope this as two functions: source ingestion with a reviewed charge map, then comparison with aggregate firm intake. Begin with one verified city. Each additional source needs its own coverage, field, and use-conditions review.

## Two more tools

### Family-policy review queue

“Which federal changes should our family-law team read before we update our explanations?” The [Federal Register document API](https://www.federalregister.gov/api/v1/documents.json?per_page=2&conditions%5Bterm%5D=child%20support&order=newest) supplies document titles, numbers, types, publication dates, and official links.

Broad keyword searches can return unrelated material. The practice lead supplies topics and agencies, then the function prepares a weekly reading queue. Proposed rules, final rules, and notices remain separate. A supervising attorney checks the controlling source and relevance before any checklist or public explanation changes.

This is a bounded source-review function. It can retain accepted topics, rejected matches, and the firm's approved explanations. It cannot determine a client's eligibility, interpret an order, or calculate a deadline from a search result.

### County procedure change review

“Which local checklist needs another attorney review?” Compare staff-supplied, lawfully usable versions of a county rule or form. Preserve the jurisdiction, document date, version, and changed section. Match those sections to the firm's own checklist references.

The [North Carolina Judicial Branch's terms](https://www.nccourts.gov/legal-notices-disclaimers-and-terms-of-use) restrict batch collection and reuse. This design therefore uses permitted copies supplied by staff. It does not run a scheduled scraper against the court website.

A missing new copy produces “source not refreshed.” It cannot produce “no changes.” The responsible attorney decides the effect of a difference and approves any checklist revision. Collection authority and document rights must be resolved before this function is scoped for a specific court.

## Try the public demo

[Open Arrest trend by charge](/tools/arrest-trend-by-charge)

The public view compares aggregate Chicago charge activity over time. Its purpose is to show the public evidence and its reporting limits. The private function adds your approved categories, aggregate intake, capacity information, and review history.

Public results must exclude arrest identifiers, block addresses, names, age, race, sex, and any person-level view. Small or identifying combinations require suppression under the accepted publication rules. An unsupported location must say that coverage is unavailable.

Keep the separate website measurement boundary clear. The [law-firm intake analytics guide](/articles/law-firm-website-intake-analytics-data-review) explains why client details do not belong in analytics events. Aggregate planning does not justify sending confidential intake to a public service.

## The limits that shape the design

The charge watch covers criminal-practice planning. It provides no measure of family-law demand. Family work uses its own policy sources and authorized aggregate records. Do not stretch an arrest feed into a divorce, custody, or household profile.

No tool creates a list of arrested people, scores individual prospects, or triggers outreach. Counsel controls any later advertising or communication review. The initial build contains no sending capability.

Acceptance should include an unmapped statute, a record with several charges, a partial month, and a delayed publication. The reviewer must reproduce the totals and explain the counting method. A failed source check stays visible rather than appearing as a fall in activity.

## Build the function your firm owns

Scale With Search defines one planning question, its lawful inputs, and the attorney's review boundary in writing. The firm keeps the category map, aggregate history, corrections, and operating instructions. A working function starts from $7,500. Confidential records remain within the firm's approved access arrangements.
