# Public grant signals for churches and nonprofits.

## The blind spot.

A promising grant title answers only the first question. Your organization still needs to establish who may apply, what work qualifies, and whether it can supply matching funds. Those answers can change while staff prepare an application.

The useful record connects each opportunity to your actual mission and capacity. It preserves why the grants lead declined a program last time. It also brings a revised notice back for review before an old decision becomes the basis for new work.

The [church and nonprofit office page](/for/churches-and-nonprofits) covers volunteer inquiries, program replies, and acknowledgment drafts. This intelligence function starts with federal funding notices and ends with a research decision.

## The flagship tool: grant forecast and fit watch.

**Your question:** “Which grants should we prepare for now, and which should we stop spending time on?”

**What it collects:** [Grants.gov search2](https://www.grants.gov/api/common/search2) supplies opportunity discovery. Its [fetchOpportunity endpoint](https://www.grants.gov/api/common/fetchopportunity) supplies the detail needed for review. Both are documented public interfaces that require no authentication. The scope begins with federal opportunities. Private foundations, municipal grants, and state programs require separate verified sources.

A search result and a detail record have different jobs:

| Public field | Question it helps staff answer |
| --- | --- |
| Opportunity ID and number | Are we tracking the same notice across revisions? |
| Forecasted or posted status | Are we preparing for a possible notice or reading a posted announcement? |
| Applicant types and eligibility text | Does our legal form appear to fit, and what additional restrictions need review? |
| Cost-sharing field | Does the finance lead need to assess a matching commitment? |
| Estimated dates and published deadlines | Which dates remain provisional? |
| Revision and agency | Who issued this version, and what changed? |

The 2026.10.27 source check found forecast opportunity 364113 with cost sharing and estimated future dates. Additional eligibility detail remained incomplete. That combination belongs in “research needed.” It cannot support an “eligible” label or a firm application deadline.

**The join to your records:** the executive director supplies an approved organization profile: legal form, program areas, service geography, staff capacity, and matching-fund limits. The collector searches daily, retrieves detail by opportunity ID, and preserves each revision. Explicit exclusions run before any explanation of fit. Missing or contradictory requirements stay visible.

The review record connects the opportunity ID to the organization's pursuit ID. It stores the exact reason for preparing, researching, or excluding the notice. A later revision reopens the affected decision. A changed agency field should not silently inherit an old approval.

**Output and cadence:** a weekly queue separates prepare, research, and exclude decisions. Each row includes the official link, version, date meaning, unresolved question, and responsible role. Changes to a watched opportunity create an internal review task on the next daily run.

**Who directs and who checks:** the executive director sets mission and capacity. The grants lead reads the complete notice and attachments before committing staff time. The finance lead checks any proposed match. The system prepares evidence; it never submits an application or makes a funding commitment.

**Why it compounds:** your organization keeps exclusion reasons, missing-document patterns, effort spent, and application outcomes. A new employee can see why a promising program repeatedly failed the same capacity check. Another organization can retrieve the notice, but it cannot retrieve your decision history.

The proposed build has two working functions: opportunity collection with revision history, and an organization-specific review queue.

## Two more tools.

### Federal award partner map.

“Which organizations already deliver publicly funded work related to our mission?” [USAspending award records](https://api.usaspending.gov/docs/intro-tutorial) provide an organization-level research starting point. The function groups relevant awards by recipient and program, keeping recipient headquarters separate from where funded work occurs.

An award shows reported funding history. It does not show money available for a new partner or an open application. The program director checks the award's scope and the organization's current work before considering a conversation. Confirmed program relationships and actual partnership decisions become the private record.

### Neighborhood growth watch.

“Which housing projects near our building deserve a capacity discussion?” The [Austin issued-permit dataset](https://data.austintexas.gov/resource/3syk-w9eu.json?$limit=1) provides a bounded local example. A collector groups project records and revisions before presenting residential project clusters.

The program director compares those clusters with aggregate service demand and existing capacity. A permit does not identify future participants, household need, or anyone's faith. Other cities need their own source and field checks. Uncovered areas remain labeled as uncovered.

## Try the public demo.

[Open Grant forecast finder](/tools/grant-forecast-finder)

Choose a program theme and organization type. The public view is designed to show forecast and posted opportunities with agency, status, dates, and official links. Missing dates and unresolved eligibility remain explicit. The result gives you notices to inspect, without deciding whether your organization qualifies.

The private function adds your approved mission profile, capacity constraints, previous decisions, and revision follow-up. No donor list or beneficiary story is needed to demonstrate the source. The public tool should never request a church name, EIN, membership record, or personal account of hardship.

The [Grants.gov API terms](https://www.grants.gov/api/terms-conditions) require this notice: “This product uses the Grants.gov API but is not endorsed or certified by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.”

## The limits that shape the design.

A broad nonprofit applicant category cannot settle all eligibility conditions. Faith-based participation and permitted uses must be checked against the particular program. Estimated forecast dates must remain separate from posted deadlines. A failed collection leaves the previous source date visible and marks the refresh unsuccessful.

The tool does not record or infer anyone's religion. Congregants, donors, volunteers, and aid recipients stay outside the public collector. It produces no household score and sends no fundraising message. Any later communication needs its own approved recipient, text, and channel process.

Identity checks also need care. Missing church filings cannot establish wrongdoing or loss of status. The separate guide to [helping donors verify nonprofit tax status](/articles/nonprofit-website-tax-status-verification-page) explains the website evidence task. Grant suitability remains a notice-specific decision for the grants lead.

## Build the function your organization owns.

Start with one program area and an approved organization profile. Handoff checks should include an excluded applicant type, an incomplete forecast, a changed matching requirement, and an unavailable source. Staff should be able to trace every decision to the version they reviewed.

Scale With Search scopes the collection, review queue, acceptance checks, and training as owned working functions. Each function starts from $7,500. Your organization keeps the source history, decisions, corrections, and operating instructions when staff or model providers change.
