# Public storm signals for collision shop capacity.

## The blind spot

The production question after a hail report is practical: should the shop hold estimate slots, check paintless-dent availability, or keep its existing plan? A weather map alone cannot answer it. The shop needs the report, its service territory, available capacity, and a record of what earlier storms brought through the door.

Public weather sources supply the first part. Your inquiry and completed-job records supply the rest. Joining them creates a planning record the production manager can inspect before changing the week.

The existing [collision shop page](/for/auto-body-and-collision-shops) explains preparation from repair files. This page covers the evidence that arrives before a repair order exists.

## The flagship tool: hail and storm capacity watch

**Your question:** “Should I hold estimate slots and check with the dent-repair crew this week? What did the last storm here bring us?”

Start with the [Storm Prediction Center's preliminary hail reports](https://www.spc.noaa.gov/climo/reports/260501_rpts_hail.csv). The dated CSV includes report time, size, location, county, state, and coordinates. The historical file for 2026.05.01 returned four hail reports when checked on 2026.10.27. That proves the fields are available; it says nothing about today's demand.

A row describes a reported weather observation. It does not count damaged vehicles, insured losses, repairable dents, or people seeking an estimate. Several reports can describe nearby observations during the same storm. Counting rows as customers would give the shop a false planning number.

The second input is the [National Weather Service alert service](https://www.weather.gov/documentation/services-web-api). Alert records provide event identifiers, affected areas, effective times, and expiry. The collector must preserve the difference between an alert and an observation. A warning belongs in a different column from a preliminary hail report.

**The join to your records:** the production manager defines service areas and the capacity rules. Collection uses those areas, without sending customer addresses to weather services. The function normalizes report dates and times, checks duplicates, and matches observations to the approved territory. It preserves source timestamps and later revisions.

The private comparison then adds inquiry date, broad service area, accepted-job category, and available estimate slots. These fields stay in the shop's record. A missing job category remains unknown. The system does not silently classify every post-storm inquiry as hail work.

**Output and cadence:** during events, the proposed collector checks reports hourly and alerts at bounded intervals that respect source caching. A capacity card appears after a qualifying change. Otherwise, the shop receives a daily review queue. Each card separates reported weather, current capacity, unresolved questions, and the manager's decision.

| Capacity-card field | What the planner can check |
| --- | --- |
| Weather evidence | Dated report or alert, with its official source |
| Territory match | County or service area and any uncertain boundary |
| Available capacity | Shop-supplied estimate slots and staffing status |
| Previous response | Recorded inquiries and accepted work after comparable events |
| Decision | Hold capacity, investigate availability, or leave the plan unchanged |

**Who directs and who checks:** the production manager sets the geography and reserve rules. The repair planner confirms bookings and subcontractor availability before a schedule changes. The tool prepares the decision; staff make the commitment.

**Why it compounds:** record the delay between an observation and the first inquiry, the work accepted, and the dent mix found during assessment. Keep false alarms too. Over time, the shop can compare its own response across events without assuming that a national hail model describes its customers.

Scope this as two working functions: event collection and matching, then capacity review with recorded outcomes. The first can operate before enough private history exists. Its output must then say that demand calibration is unavailable.

## Two more tools

### Recall intake check

“Which booked vehicles need a campaign question added to the planner's checklist?” The [NHTSA recall API](https://api.nhtsa.gov/recalls/recallsByVehicle?make=Honda&model=Accord&modelYear=2020) accepts make, model, and model year. Records include campaign numbers and affected components.

Match the shop's booked vehicle combinations to those records, then produce a daily possible-match list. The repair planner checks applicability through the appropriate vehicle-specific process. A model match does not establish an open recall for a particular VIN or authorize repair work. Keep customer identifiers inside the shop.

This can be one bounded function. Its useful history includes corrected model aliases, rejected matches, and recorded dealer handoffs. Those corrections belong beside the internal job reference.

### Collision coverage planner

“Do our intake hours match the periods when our area records collisions?” [NYC Motor Vehicle Collisions](https://data.cityofnewyork.us/resource/h9gi-nx95.json) supplies collision identifiers, dates, times, boroughs, and vehicle classes. Some geographic fields can be absent.

A monthly comparison aggregates supported areas and hours, then adds the shop's own intake totals. It reports missing geography separately. The owner can use it to frame a limited coverage experiment. A crash count cannot establish repair demand or identify a customer. Another city needs its own verified source and definitions.

## Try the public demo

[Open Storm report explorer](/tools/storm-report-explorer)

Use the hail view to inspect dated preliminary reports. Read the source time and coverage label before comparing places. An empty result means the selected source returned no matching reports. A failed fetch must display a different message.

The public demo proves the weather evidence. The private function adds your capacity calendar, inquiry history, accepted work, and planner corrections. It must never request a VIN, plate, claim number, customer address, or injury description. Free-text weather comments stay out of the public result.

For the separate customer-facing explanation of your service, use the [hail damage service-page guide](/articles/auto-body-shop-hail-damage-service-page). Keep its repair claims tied to work your shop can document.

## The limits that shape the design

An alert may lack a usable polygon. The collector must use the published zone or mark the location unresolved. It must also process expiry, cancellation, and updates. Old alerts cannot remain active because the next fetch failed.

Weather evidence provides no diagnosis, repair method, insurer authorization, or safety clearance. The function creates no storm-victim list and acquires no motor-vehicle ownership records. It does not send messages, book repairs, or move technicians.

Test a known report, a valid empty day, a stale response, and a cancelled alert before handoff. Ask the planner to trace every capacity card to its source and private input. Record rejected recommendations as carefully as accepted ones.

## Build the function your company owns

Scale With Search defines the sources, service areas, review roles, and acceptance checks before building. Your shop keeps the event history, matching rules, corrections, and run records. A working function starts from $7,500. Hosting and source access belong in the written scope.
