# WordPress vs Squarespace for a real estate agent website

Choose Squarespace when its editing workflow, inquiry forms, and proposed IDX integration meet your requirements in a demonstration. Choose self-hosted WordPress when you need custom content structures or integrations and have someone responsible for maintaining them. These are selection criteria. Require proof on the website you plan to buy.

WordPress supports custom content types and plugin extensions. Squarespace provides visual page editing, form blocks, and custom code capabilities with published restrictions. Compare those capabilities against your local pages and seller or buyer inquiry path. [WordPress features](https://wordpress.org/about/features/), [Squarespace Fluid Engine](https://support.squarespace.com/hc/en-us/articles/6421525446541-Edit-your-site-with-Fluid-Engine), [Squarespace form blocks](https://support.squarespace.com/hc/en-us/articles/206566737-Form-blocks), [Squarespace code injection](https://support.squarespace.com/hc/en-us/articles/205815908-Customize-parts-of-your-site-with-code-injection). Checked: 2026.10.14.

The demonstrations below are proposed buying checks. They are not results from tested agent websites or evidence that either platform produces more inquiries.

## Establish which WordPress service you are comparing

Here, WordPress means the open-source software installed with a hosting provider you choose. WordPress.com is a separate managed hosting service using that software. Its included services differ from a self-hosted installation. [WordPress.com versus WordPress.org](https://wordpress.com/support/com-vs-org/). Checked: 2026.10.14.

Ask a WordPress bidder to name the host, editor, theme, necessary plugins, and maintenance provider. If the proposal uses WordPress.com, have the bidder identify that service and its actual plan. Avoid comparing a Squarespace subscription with an unnamed WordPress setup.

Record the proposed Squarespace version and plan too. Fluid Engine is the primary editing experience for version 7.1; it is unavailable on version 7.0. [Squarespace Fluid Engine documentation](https://support.squarespace.com/hc/en-us/articles/6421525446541-Edit-your-site-with-Fluid-Engine). Checked: 2026.10.14.

## Test how you will publish and maintain local pages

Bring a representative community page, seller guide, and agent bio to each demonstration. Use approved material from your own business. Ask the builder to show how you change a photograph, revise an answer, and update a contact block.

WordPress provides posts and pages, draft and scheduled publishing, revisions, and user roles. Developers can extend its content model with custom post types, taxonomies, and metadata. [WordPress publishing and developer features](https://wordpress.org/about/features/). Checked: 2026.10.14.

For a proposed community library, ask whether each community needs reusable fields and a shared template. Have the builder demonstrate a change to that template and a change to one community's text. Require the proposal to name any custom development or plugin dependency. Do not buy that complexity unless your publishing work needs it.

Squarespace's version 7.1 editor uses blocks arranged on a grid. Its design tools support separate refinement of desktop and mobile layouts. [Squarespace Fluid Engine](https://support.squarespace.com/hc/en-us/articles/6421525446541-Edit-your-site-with-Fluid-Engine), [Squarespace website design tools](https://www.squarespace.com/website-design). Checked: 2026.10.14.

In a Squarespace demonstration, edit the same local page and inspect both layouts. Ask how repeated brokerage details and inquiry buttons will be maintained across your planned pages. Record which changes require you to visit each page and which can be made centrally.

Use the editor yourself before accepting the handover. Save an approved change in a preview, inspect it on a phone, and ask how to reverse it. Choose the workflow you can operate with the support you intend to retain.

## Resolve IDX compatibility before choosing the platform

WordPress's plugin system and Squarespace's code tools are different starting points for an integration. Squarespace currently lists code injection for Core, Plus, Advanced, and some legacy billing plans. That feature statement concerns code injection, not approval of a particular IDX product. [WordPress plugin system](https://wordpress.org/about/features/), [Squarespace code injection availability](https://support.squarespace.com/hc/en-us/articles/205815908-Customize-parts-of-your-site-with-code-injection). Checked: 2026.10.14.

Ask your IDX provider to confirm the proposed platform, plan, MLS coverage, and integration method in writing. Request a demonstration using the proposed product. Have the builder identify whether visitors remain on your domain or move to an outside search page.

Follow a buyer from search to a listing, then to an inquiry. If registration is required, include that step. Check that the receiving person gets the property context and reply details. Give each failed step a repair owner before committing to the build.

Keep this comparison focused on compatibility and responsibility. Obtain installation instructions, approvals, and subscription terms from your actual IDX provider.

## Prove inquiry delivery beyond the success message

Squarespace form blocks send submissions to email by default. The initial destination is the account email of the site owner or contributor who added the form. The recipient can be changed, and additional storage options are available. [Squarespace form block settings](https://support.squarespace.com/hc/en-us/articles/206566737-Form-blocks). Checked: 2026.10.14.

For a Squarespace proposal, have the builder show the notification destination for every seller and buyer form. Name any additional destination in the scope. Check plan eligibility for the exact connection rather than assuming every integration is included.

For WordPress, require the proposal to name the form tool, submission storage, sending service, and receiving destination. WordPress's email-function documentation says successful processing does not establish that the recipient received the message. [WordPress `wp_mail()` documentation](https://developer.wordpress.org/reference/functions/wp_mail/). Checked: 2026.10.14.

Arrange marked tests with the recipient using contact details you control. Submit a seller question from the seller page and a buyer question from the relevant property path. Inspect the received messages separately from the screen confirmations.

Keep the source page, property context where relevant, reply details, destination, and receipt in the acceptance record. If a CRM connection is proposed, require a separate check there. Do not treat a working email notification as proof of that connection.

## Compare what you can take when you leave

Squarespace exports selected content as WordPress-format XML. Its documentation includes layout pages and one blog page, while excluding portfolio pages, drafts, style settings, and custom CSS. This is a content export with omissions. [Squarespace export inclusions and exclusions](https://support.squarespace.com/hc/en-us/articles/206566687-Export-your-site-content). Checked: 2026.10.14.

Ask for an export of a representative local page before treating the exit plan as settled. Inventory photographs, downloads, additional blogs, and excluded pages separately. Have the receiving builder identify what needs reconstruction.

Squarespace warns that an import to self-hosted WordPress may leave images linked to Squarespace rather than copied. It advises checking image recovery before cancellation. [Squarespace image migration guidance](https://support.squarespace.com/hc/en-us/articles/206566687-Export-your-site-content). Checked: 2026.10.14.

WordPress's export tool includes posts, pages, custom fields, and other content in XML. A complete restoration also needs the site's files and database. Keep those deliverables distinct. [WordPress export tool](https://wordpress.org/documentation/article/tools-export-screen/), [WordPress backup documentation](https://developer.wordpress.org/advanced-administration/security/backup/). Checked: 2026.10.14.

For a WordPress proposal, request the file and database handover, media inventory, and theme or plugin license arrangements. Require an agreed restore demonstration in a test environment. Confirm which paid services the next maintainer must retain or replace.

For either platform, keep domain registration, website access, original content, and third-party accounts visible in the agreement. Name who controls each account and who can recover access. Judge portability by the demonstrated handover.

- [Move a real estate agent website from Squarespace to WordPress](/articles/migrate-squarespace-agent-website-to-wordpress)

## Assign upkeep and test the finished pages for speed

WordPress.com documents managed hosting, while self-hosted WordPress requires a separate hosting arrangement. Maintenance services vary with that arrangement. [WordPress hosting distinction](https://wordpress.com/support/com-vs-org/). Checked: 2026.10.14.

For self-hosted WordPress, assign updates, backups, restoration, plugin faults, and inquiry retests to a named provider. Ask what happens when an update breaks a form. Require written coverage rather than assuming the host handles every application issue.

For Squarespace, assign page upkeep and custom integration support separately. Its code-injection documentation says Squarespace support does not add custom code or troubleshoot problems arising from it. [Squarespace custom-code support limits](https://support.squarespace.com/hc/en-us/articles/205815908-Customize-parts-of-your-site-with-code-injection). Checked: 2026.10.14.

Make speed an acceptance check for both proposals. Request recorded tests of the homepage, a local page, the seller form, and the buyer search path where present. Use the proposed images and integrations. Keep the URLs, device conditions, date, and results so a later maintainer can repeat the check.

Have the builder repair observed delays and repeat the affected task. Do not choose a platform from an unrelated template demonstration or an unsupported claim that it will rank better.

## Put the decision in the website scope

Use the same acceptance record for both bidders:

| Requirement | Evidence to request |
| --- | --- |
| Local publishing | You edit the agreed pages and inspect phone and desktop layouts |
| Content structure | Builder shows repeated fields, shared changes, and any manual upkeep |
| IDX | Provider confirms compatibility; proposed search-to-inquiry path is demonstrated |
| Inquiry delivery | Marked seller and buyer tests arrive at each agreed destination |
| Portability | Representative export or restore shows retained content and reconstruction work |
| Care and speed | Named support owners, service coverage, and repeatable page tests |
| Ongoing cost | Written subscription, hosting, integration, license, and care costs, including renewal terms |

Leave a requirement unresolved until the bidder supplies evidence. Choose the proposal that meets your required tasks with an editing and support arrangement you can maintain.

Scale With Search's published $2,000 whole website fix covers one listing-agent or small-team website repaired or rebuilt as a static site. It includes client-owned hosting, an inquiry-path test, proof of receipt, and a handover of files, an editing guide, and a publishing script. [Published whole website fix](https://scalewithsearch.com/work). Checked: 2026.10.14.
