# Resell white label SEO with margins, partners, and quality controls that protect your clients.

Your clients ask for SEO, and your agency has no SEO specialists. White label SEO lets you sell it anyway. A partner firm does the technical work, content, and links. Your agency keeps the client relationship and puts its own brand on the reports.

The model works when the economics, the partner's skills, and the communication systems all fit. It fails badly when they do not, because the client blames you for the partner's work. This article covers the economics, partner selection, packaging, client communication, quality control, operations, scaling, risk, and the move to in-house delivery.

## Check the economics before you sell

The model only works if every party earns enough.

The partner's wholesale fee often runs 40 to 60 percent of what the agency bills the client. Treat that range as a planning assumption, and check it against real partner quotes. The remainder must pay for account management, strategy, and your overhead, and still leave a margin.

Here is a worked example, with the client's monthly retainer set to 100 units.

| Line | Units | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Client retainer | 100 | What the client pays you |
| Partner fee | 50 | Midpoint of the 40 to 60 percent range |
| Account management | 15 | Calls, reports, and coordination |
| Share of overhead | 10 | Tools, sales, administration |
| Margin | 25 | 25 percent |

A 25 percent margin sits below the 30 to 50 percent range many agencies target after partner fees and account management. Below 30 percent, the work rarely justifies the risk. A margin far above 50 percent deserves a check of whether the partner's low fee reflects thin work. [Agency SEO pricing models](/articles/agency-seo-pricing-models) covers how to set the retainer itself.

Four more factors change the math:

- **Retainer size.** A small retainer cannot cover the partner fee and the hours of account management a client needs. Set a floor below which you do not sell.
- **Tiers.** A basic tier with a thin margin can lead to premium tiers with better margins.
- **Stability.** Partners often set minimum volumes, so client churn costs more than with in-house delivery.
- **Volume and lifetime.** Partners discount at volume, so ten clients earn more per client than two. If clients stay two years or more, a thin first-year margin can still pay over the relationship.

## Vet the partner on real work

The partner's quality becomes your reputation. Check seven things:

1. **Technical skill.** Ask for case studies, audit sample deliverables, and review their technical documentation. Claims on a sales page say nothing about implementation quality.
2. **Responsiveness.** Test it during the sales process. A partner slow to answer a prospect will be slower with a client issue.
3. **White label reports.** Reports must accept your branding, carry the right level of detail for clients, and arrive on schedule.
4. **Capacity.** Ask whether they can handle five times your current volume. Growth strains a new partnership first.
5. **Specialty.** Some partners focus on local SEO, others on ecommerce or B2B SaaS. Match their strength to your client base.
6. **Approach.** If you believe in content-led SEO and the partner does only technical tactics, you will argue over every plan.
7. **Contract terms.** Month-to-month gives flexibility with less commitment. Annual terms give stability but limit changes.

Referrals from other agency owners find the best partners. Industry groups and conferences are the next source. Ask for references and run a trial period before you move clients. [How to audit an SEO agency](/articles/how-to-audit-seo-agency) gives a vetting checklist that works for partners too.

## Package the services

Tiered packages offer good, better, and best options. A basic tier might cover a technical audit and on-page work. A premium tier adds content production and link building. Component pricing, where clients buy technical SEO, content, and links separately, gives flexibility and makes delivery harder to manage. Industry packages, such as local SEO for restaurants or ecommerce SEO for retailers, make your positioning clear.

Decide how much of the partner's work clients see. Some agencies show every deliverable. Others turn partner work into strategy presentations. Full visibility builds trust, and it also exposes the white label arrangement.

Do not guarantee rankings. Too much sits outside anyone's control, and Google's own guidance warns businesses about SEO providers that guarantee rankings. Traffic targets with clear caveats work better.

Set minimum contract lengths of six to twelve months for stability. Month-to-month terms suit clients and raise churn.

## Communicate as the lead, not the messenger

Clients hired you, so you lead the strategy even when the partner does the work.

- **Monthly reports** turn partner deliverables into a story: what changed, what it means, and what comes next. Raw analytics exports confuse clients. [Agency SEO reporting frameworks](/articles/agency-seo-reporting-frameworks) covers report structure.
- **Quarterly reviews** step back from tactics to check whether the strategy works and adjust it.
- **Expectations** need constant care. Explain realistic timelines in the sale, and repeat them in slow months.
- **Escalation** runs through you. Clients contact you, and you coordinate with the partner. Write the path down.
- **Disclosure** is a choice. Some agencies disclose the partnership, and others present the work as their own. Either can work. Pick one policy and keep it for every client.

When the partner makes a mistake, own it with the client. The client hired you, not the partner. Fix the problem fast, then raise it with the partner privately. Repeated mistakes mean a new partner.

## Control quality before the client sees the work

Review every deliverable, such as audits, content drafts, and reports, before it reaches the client. Run spot audits on work already delivered to confirm that the standard holds over time. Check in with clients regularly and act fast on problems they raise.

Compare results across clients. If some accounts underperform consistently, find out whether the partner's execution or the client's situation is the cause.

Put the rules in the partner contract. State how many revisions are included and the turnaround time for changes. Define unacceptable work and how the partner fixes it.

## Integrate the operations

Good operations make the partnership invisible to the client.

| Need | Practice |
|---|---|
| Project tracking | Shared boards in Asana, Monday, or ClickUp, so that both sides see status without meetings |
| Communication | A dedicated Slack channel per client, plus regular sync calls on priorities |
| Files | Shared drives for drafts, design assets, and reports |
| Credentials | A password manager with shared vaults, such as 1Password or Bitwarden, instead of passwords in email |
| Onboarding | One intake that collects the technical access, analytics access, and business context the partner needs |
| Billing | Payment terms that match: if you pay the partner sooner than clients pay you, you finance the gap |

## Plan for the problems of growth

One account manager can usually handle 10 to 15 clients, depending on service complexity. Growth past that needs a hire. Partners that accept every request and then miss deadlines cause crises; confirm their capacity before you add clients.

Quality slips with volume. A process that works for five clients breaks at fifty, so standardize before you scale. Segment clients by revenue, complexity, or growth potential, and give each segment the attention it pays for. Build onboarding for new account managers that covers the partner, the processes, and enough SEO to judge the work. Replace manual reporting with automation before volume forces it. [Agency owner SEO operations](/articles/agency-owner-seo-operations) covers the systems side of growth.

## Improve the margin over time

- Sell more of the services with the best margin. If content is thin and technical work is healthy, lead with technical work.
- Grow existing accounts. A current client costs less to serve than a new one costs to win.
- Automate reporting and use templates for strategy, so that delivery takes fewer hours.
- Renegotiate the partner fee once your volume is proven. Partners accept lower fees for predictable volume.
- Specialize. A clear niche and a record of results support prices above the commodity market.
- Standardize the components of your packages, while you still adapt the strategy to each client.

## Manage the dependency risk

A white label model makes you depend on someone else's delivery. Reduce that risk in six ways:

1. Keep a second partner ready, so that one failure does not stop delivery.
2. Build your own skills while you resell, so that you have options later.
3. Put exit terms in the partner contract that give you time to move clients.
4. Keep client contracts no longer than the partner's commitment to you.
5. Carry errors and omissions insurance in case partner mistakes harm a client.
6. Monitor reputation through client feedback, online reviews, and referral rates.

## Bring delivery in-house in stages

Many agencies start with white label and move delivery in-house later.

Strategy comes first. Learn enough SEO strategy to direct the partner, and you have the base for internal delivery. Technical knowledge grows from working with the partner; ask for training, documentation, and explanations of their work.

Hire when volume justifies full-time specialists, often around 10 to 15 monthly retainer clients. Compare the cost of a full-time hire with the partner fees for the same work. Include the value of control and capability. A hybrid model is common: keep strategy and technical work in-house, and outsource content or links. [Agency SEO hiring and training](/articles/agency-seo-hiring-training) covers the hiring plan.

Migrate one component at a time: technical work first, then content, then link building. Tell clients the change improves service and continuity. Hold internal quality to the partner's level or better, because a drop damages the relationship. Check that margins actually improve; if they do not, the move is early. Keep the partner relationship for overflow and specialist work.

## Sell work you do not deliver yourself

You can sell with confidence only if you trust the partner's results. Use case studies and metrics from partner-delivered work as proof, with permission. Offer an audit or a pilot project so that clients can judge quality before a large commitment. Position around a specialty rather than general SEO. Know the partner's fees exactly, so that you can price with a known margin. Share realistic timelines, admit problems, and report wins as they happen.
