Skipping search does not authorize an unsupported answer. Set opt-out conditions for the selected task and source set. Test them against source evidence and denied requests. The policy below is a proposed design. It does not describe a tested product configuration. ## Decide eligibility before ranking sources First check the user's identity, business context, allowed source set, and requested action. If identity or permissions are unresolved, refuse private retrieval. If the request is ambiguous, ask for the missing scope. Only then search the authorized records. Require the implementer to demonstrate that denied records remain excluded. Test source eligibility separately from relevance ranking. A high similarity score is not approval to disclose a record. Keep access checks outside model judgment. ## Name the reason for each no-search result | Condition | Proposed behavior | Evidence to retain | | --- | --- | --- | | The user supplied sufficient approved source text | Answer from that bounded text without another search. | Source identifier and revision. | | The task is formatting supplied text without adding facts | Transform the supplied text. | Input and output comparison. | | No permitted source set exists | Refuse private retrieval and request authorized access. | Eligibility result without exposing private content. | | Business or project identity is ambiguous | Ask for scope before searching. | The unresolved scope. | | Available records are expired or contradicted | Stop a factual answer and request a current source. | Source status and conflict. | | An authorized search returns no adequate evidence | Return “no supported answer” or request clarification. | Search outcome and the missing evidence. | The last row is a post-search stop, not a reason to claim that no search occurred. Record the distinction. ## Separate missing evidence from product failure When a search returns no result, investigate source gaps, access filtering, indexing delays, and query mismatches. Inspect permitted source availability before changing a threshold. If the selected implementation rewrites queries, require it to retain the original and submitted versions where available. Include that behavior in the evaluation cases. Leave undocumented transformations UNRESOLVED. Do not weaken access filters to improve recall. If a source is missing, correct its authorized ingestion path or leave the answer unresolved. ## Make an abstention useful A stopped answer should identify the task, the permitted records inspected, the reason for stopping, and the next required input. Keep private source titles out of a response to an unauthorized user. For a synthetic example, suppose the only permitted policy record is explicitly expired. The assistant should say it lacks a current approved policy. It should not fill the gap from a related record belonging to another business. This is an acceptance scenario, not a customer incident or measured test result. ## Test the gate before trusting it Create synthetic cases for sufficient supplied text, ambiguous scope, denied access, expired records, conflicting decisions, empty search, and a supported answer. Define the expected route before running the assistant. Check the retrieval log as well as the final text. A plausible answer fails if it used an unauthorized record. If you select a numeric threshold, calibrate it on the task's evaluation set. Keep the dataset version and failure cases. No numeric threshold is established by this draft.
