A small business planning guide A web page is an HTML document displayed by a browser. HTML provides the document's structure. A website brings related pages and resources together. For a small business, the practical question is what each page helps a customer understand or do. MDN distinguishes pages, websites, servers, and search engines in its introduction to browsing. You do not need to choose the underlying code before preparing a page brief. Start with the questions the business can answer accurately. ## Separate the terms in a website proposal Use these distinctions when asking a builder what is included: | Term | Practical meaning for the brief | | --- | --- | | Page | One HTML document, such as a service explanation or contact page | | Website | The connected pages and resources offered together | | Domain | The named address used to reach the site | | Hosting | The service or infrastructure delivering the site | | Search engine | A service that helps people find resources on the web | MDN explains domains, servers, and the process of requesting web resources in its account of how the web works. Ask the provider to identify who controls the domain and hosting accounts. A page design approval does not answer the ownership and management questions in those services. ## Give each proposed page a customer question Write a short list of real questions your business is prepared to answer. Common starting points include what you offer, where you work, how a request is handled, and how someone contacts you. Assign related questions to one page when they need the same explanation. Create a separate page when the service, evidence, or next step differs enough to help the reader. Avoid setting a page count before writing those purposes. A long list of addresses is not a substitute for approved service information. ## Specify what the builder needs for each page Prepare the page name, intended reader, main question, source material, and desired action. Name the person who approves its facts. Keep a missing price, credential, or service promise unresolved until that person supplies it. For a contact page, state the required fields and receiving destination. For a location page, provide the actual address and approved arrival instructions. For a service page, describe the work the business accepts. ## Connect the pages through meaningful links Ask the builder to link from the overview to the relevant service and contact pages. Choose link labels that explain the destination. Read the proposed navigation as a customer task rather than as a list of internal department names. Follow its main contact or purchase path in an agreed test. Record whether the intended person receives the necessary information.
