# Structure answers and local listings so voice assistants can read your content aloud.

A person in a car asks their phone, "What's the best Italian restaurant near downtown Denver?" The assistant reads one answer aloud, or it names one or two places. There is no page of ten blue links. Either your business is that answer, or it is absent.

Voice queries differ from typed ones in length, phrasing, and intent. The answers come from featured snippets, local listings, and, more and more, generative assistants that summarize several sources. This article covers how to structure content and listings for each source, how to measure the result, and which role owns which task.

## Know how voice queries differ

| Trait | Typed query | Spoken query |
|---|---|---|
| Length | A few keywords | Longer, often a full sentence |
| Form | Fragments, such as "italian restaurant denver" | Questions, such as "What's the best Italian restaurant near downtown Denver?" |
| Wording | Shorthand, such as "cheap web design" | Conversational, such as "Where can I find affordable web designers?" |
| Intent | Mixed | Often local and immediate, such as "near me" |
| Action | Research, then click | Direct commands, such as "Call the nearest plumber" or "Get directions to the hospital" |
| Context | At a desk or on a phone | Hands busy: driving, cooking, walking |

Spoken questions usually start with who, what, when, where, why, or how. They name the need in full, which makes intent easier to read than in a two-word typed query.

## Know where each assistant gets its answers

| Assistant | Main answer sources | What to optimize |
|---|---|---|
| Google Assistant and Gemini | Google Search, featured snippets, Google Business Profile, Google Maps | Snippets, local listings, clear answers on your pages |
| Siri | Apple Maps for places, with review data from partners such as Yelp; web results for other questions | Apple Business Connect listing, reviews, clear web answers |
| Alexa | Amazon's own data, partner sources, and Alexa Skills | Amazon presence for products; a Skill for direct integration |
| Microsoft Copilot | Bing | Bing Webmaster Tools and Bing Places |

Google has been replacing Assistant with Gemini on phones since 2025. Gemini writes its own answer and may draw from several pages, so a single snippet matters less. A clear, trusted source matters more. Microsoft retired Cortana on Windows in 2023; Copilot now fills that role with Bing data.

Set priorities by business type. A local business needs Google and Apple listings first. A store with products on Amazon should care about Alexa. A content site should focus on Google.

## Win the featured snippet for each question

For many questions, a Google-based assistant reads the featured snippet. [Featured snippet optimization](/articles/featured-snippet-optimization) covers the method in depth. The core steps are these:

1. Search each target question and note whether a snippet appears, and in which format.
2. Match the format. Definitions get a paragraph snippet. Processes get a list. Comparisons get a table.
3. Put the question in an H2 or H3 heading, phrased as the searcher asks it. "How do I optimize for voice search?" matches the spoken query better than "Voice search optimization."
4. Answer in the first sentences under the heading. Many SEOs aim for 40 to 60 words, long enough to be useful and short enough to read aloud.
5. Elaborate after the answer, not before it.
6. Add a relevant, optimized image; snippets often show one.
7. Track which questions you win, and rewrite the answers that do not win.

Short paragraphs, numbered lists, and bold key terms make an answer easy to extract.

## Structure pages so that answers are easy to extract

Several page patterns serve spoken questions well.

A **question and answer section** lists real customer questions with direct answers. Each pair is a chance to match a spoken query.

A **how-to page** breaks a process into numbered steps, which matches "how to" questions.

A **definition paragraph** near the top of the page answers "what is" questions in one or two sentences.

A **comparison table** lays out options with their features. Assistants can pull data from well-structured tables.

**Location details** appear the same way on every page: business name, address, and phone number (NAP).

Structured data helps search engines read these patterns, but Google changed what several types do. [The schema types guide](/articles/schema-markup-types-guide) covers each type in detail.

| Markup | Status for voice and rich results |
|---|---|
| `FAQPage` | Since August 2023, Google shows FAQ rich results only for well-known government and health sites. The markup is valid, but most businesses get no rich result. |
| `HowTo` | Google removed HowTo rich results in 2023. |
| `QAPage` | For pages where users post questions and answers, such as forums. Still supported. |
| `Speakable` | Beta. Marks sections for text-to-speech, for news publishers in US English. |
| `LocalBusiness` | Supported. Gives name, address, hours, and geo-coordinates. |
| `Recipe` | Supported. Voice questions about ingredients, times, and steps often target recipes. |
| `Event` | Supported. Gives date, time, location, and performers. |

## Research conversational keywords

Standard keyword research finds typed phrases. Voice research looks for questions.

Collect the question forms of your topics from the "People also ask" boxes in Google. AnswerThePublic and AlsoAsked collect them too. Filter your keyword tool for question words. List the different ways people ask the same question, and cover the main variants on one page.

Note three kinds of modifiers. Pronouns and helper words, such as "I," "you," "can," and "should," mark natural speech. Location words, such as "near me," "in [city]," and "closest," mark local intent. Action verbs, such as "find," "get," "call," "book," and "order," mark a searcher ready to act.

## Own the local answer

Many spoken queries look for a nearby business. Google ranks local results by relevance, distance, and prominence.

Complete your Google Business Profile: categories, hours, services, photos, and a description. [Google Business Profile optimization](/articles/google-business-profile-optimization) covers each field. Claim the same listing in Apple Business Connect for Siri and in Bing Places for Copilot.

Keep NAP identical across your website, directories, and social profiles. Mismatched addresses or phone numbers confuse the systems that match listings.

Earn reviews steadily. The number of reviews, their rating, and a regular flow of new ones all signal an active, trusted business. Publish local content, such as city pages and neighborhood guides, that shows relevance to the areas you serve. Mark up each location with `LocalBusiness`, including `GeoCoordinates` and the service area.

Distance is out of your control. Relevance and prominence are not.

## Make the landing page work on a phone

A voice search often ends in a visit to your site on a phone. The page must work fast and on a small screen.

- Aim for a load time under three seconds, with Core Web Vitals in the good range.
- Put a click-to-call link with `tel:` near the top.
- Keep navigation simple and make the next action obvious.
- Show hours, directions, and service area without a scroll.
- Tailor content to the visitor's location where it helps, such as the nearest branch.

## Write in a conversational register

Content that answers spoken questions reads well when it sounds like a person answering.

Use "you" and "we." "You can book online" sounds natural; "One can book online" does not. Use active voice: "Create a question page" beats "A question page should be created." Keep sentences short, because long sentences are hard to follow when read aloud. Use plain words, because voice users ask in plain language. Use transitions such as "first" and "next" to mark steps.

## Match each intent type

| Intent | Example | What the page needs |
|---|---|---|
| Informational | "What is keyword research?" | A clear definition and a complete explanation |
| Navigational | "Moz Keyword Explorer" | A strong brand page and clear site structure |
| Transactional | "Buy running shoes" | Product pages, clear prices, a simple checkout |
| Commercial | "Best CRM for small business" | Comparisons, reviews, and specifications |
| Local | "Coffee shop open now" | An accurate local listing and a location page |

[Search intent explained](/articles/search-intent-explained) covers intent classification in more depth.

## Measure voice through proxies

Analytics tools do not label voice traffic. It arrives as organic search. Use proxies instead.

In the Search Console Performance report, filter queries with a regular expression such as `^(who|what|when|where|why|how)\s` to see question queries. Track their clicks and impressions over time. Track the snippets you hold with Semrush or Ahrefs. Watch local performance in Google Business Profile, such as calls and direction requests, and "near me" queries in Search Console. Compare conversions by device, since most voice searches start on phones.

Generative assistants often answer without a click. [Zero-click searches](/articles/zero-click-searches-seo) covers how to measure value when the answer appears in the result itself.

Expect results in three to six months for snippet work. Local improvements often show sooner for businesses with strong local demand.

## Split the work by role

| Role | Owns |
|---|---|
| Content strategist | The question map, target snippets, page formats |
| Copywriter | Question headings, answer-first paragraphs, conversational tone |
| Developer | Structured data, page speed, click-to-call, mobile layout |
| Local SEO specialist | Google Business Profile, Apple Business Connect, Bing Places, citations, reviews |
| SEO manager | Priorities across typed and spoken search, and the reporting |

You do not need separate content for voice. Pages with question headings, direct answers, and plain language serve typed and spoken queries alike. Voice adds to typed search rather than replacing it. Voice serves hands-free, local, and quick-answer moments. Typed search still leads for complex research. For a small local business, voice work is mostly local work, and it is worth doing first.
