# See which SEO software companies took outside money, and what it means for you.

Your SEO tool sends a renewal notice. The logo is the same, but the footer names a new parent company. You want to know who owns the tool now, and what that change means for your contract and your data.

This page lists SEO software companies that raised venture or private-equity money, went public, or changed owners. Each entry says what the company sells. It gives one dated fact with its source. It ends with one question to ask the vendor. The questions are not predictions. A funding round does not tell you what a vendor will do next. It tells you what to ask.

This page is for buyers of SEO tools. To plan SEO for your own funded startup by stage, read [SEO for VC-backed startups](/articles/seo-vc-backed-startups) instead.

> **Quick Summary**
> - **What this covers:** twelve SEO software companies with a cited funding round, public listing, or change of owner.
> - **Who it's for:** owners and marketing leads who pay for SEO tools and sign their renewals.
> - **Key takeaway:** after a sale or a new round, check your exports, contract terms, and price-change notice.

## Read this list as a dated snapshot.

Funding status changes. A company can raise a new round, buy a rival, or be sold in any month. Every source on this page was opened on 2026.10.03. Each fact is true as of its source date, not as of the day you read it.

The list covers four categories: all-in-one suites, enterprise platforms, content tools, and AI search visibility tools. It leaves out any company or figure that a source opened on 2026.10.03 did not state. It gives no valuation estimates.

## All-in-one suites and market data.

### Semrush is now part of Adobe.

Semrush sells a [brand visibility platform](https://news.adobe.com/news/2026/04/adobe-completes-semrush-acquisition) for SEO and AI search. It went public through an initial public offering. Its [prospectus, dated March 24, 2021](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1831840/000162828021005671/semrush424b4.htm), priced 10,000,000 Class A shares at $14.00. Semrush's first quarterly report names [March 25, 2021 as the first day of trading](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1831840/000183184021000009/semr-20210331.htm). The shares traded on the NYSE as "SEMR."

Adobe [announced the completion of its acquisition of Semrush](https://news.adobe.com/news/2026/04/adobe-completes-semrush-acquisition) on April 28, 2026. Semrush published a [customer FAQ on the deal](https://www.semrush.com/news/455963-faq-for-customers-adobe-acquires-semrush/) on the same day. That April 28, 2026 FAQ said there would be no immediate changes to current agreements or billing. It also answered a question on pricing. "At this time, there will be no changes to our existing contracts and agreements," the answer read. Treat that as a statement from the closing date, not as your current terms.

**Ask:** Which company's terms will govern my next renewal, and how much notice will you give before they change?

For a feature comparison of Semrush with two rivals, see [Ahrefs vs Semrush vs Moz](/articles/ahrefs-vs-semrush-vs-moz).

### Similarweb is public and changing its CEO.

Similarweb sells [web and app data, analytics, and insights](https://ir.similarweb.com/news-events/press-releases/detail/161/similarweb-names-michael-akkerman-as-new-chief-executive-officer). Its shares [began trading on the NYSE on May 12, 2021](https://ir.similarweb.com/news-events/press-releases/detail/26/similarweb-announces-closing-of-initial-public-offering) under "SMWB."

On September 24, 2026, Similarweb [named Michael Akkerman as its new CEO](https://ir.similarweb.com/news-events/press-releases/detail/161/similarweb-names-michael-akkerman-as-new-chief-executive-officer), effective November 2, 2026. The release says there is no change to strategy or operations.

**Ask:** Which product features in my order form are contract commitments, and which are roadmap items?

### Moz belongs to Ziff Davis.

Moz sells SEO software. Ziff Davis, then named J2 Global, [acquired SEOmoz on June 4, 2021](https://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1084048/000108404822000054/zd-20220630.htm). Its 2022 quarterly filing describes SEOmoz as a Seattle-based company that offers search engine optimization solutions. On 2026.10.03, the footer of [Moz's about page](https://moz.com/about) read "SEOMoz, Inc., a Ziff Davis company."

**Ask:** Which legal entity signs my contract? Do its data and privacy terms differ from my original terms?

### Ahrefs lists itself as bootstrapped.

Not every large SEO tool took outside money. Ahrefs includes itself in its own [list of bootstrapped SaaS companies](https://ahrefs.com/blog/top-bootstrapped-saas-companies). The list defines these as companies that grew without outside funding. It is a contrast, not one of the twelve.

## Enterprise SEO platforms and technical crawlers.

### Conductor raised growth equity and bought two rivals.

Conductor calls itself an [enterprise organic marketing technology company](https://www.bregal.com/news/conductor-raises-150m-in-funding-to-power-the-company-s-next-phase-of-growth-in-the-organic-marketing-revolution/). On November 16, 2021, it announced a $150 million round led by Bregal Sagemount. The same release says it was the first financing since Conductor bought itself back from WeWork in 2019.

Conductor then bought two other SEO tools. A [February 2023 release](https://www.bregal.com/news/conductor-acquires-seo-technology-searchmetrics/) announced the acquisition of Searchmetrics. The same release says Conductor acquired ContentKing three months after the 2021 round.

**Ask:** When does the product you acquired move into the main platform? How do I export my history first?

### Botify raised a Series C.

Botify sells [enterprise software for organic search](https://infraviacapital.com/botify-seriesc-infravia/). On September 16, 2021, it announced a $55 million Series C led by InfraVia Growth. Bpifrance, Eurazeo, and Ventech also took part.

**Ask:** Can I export my full crawl history in a standard format, such as CSV, if I leave?

### Lumar, formerly Deepcrawl, raised a Series B.

Deepcrawl built a [cloud-based SEO platform](https://tech.eu/2020/03/10/londons-deepcrawl-scores-19-million-for-its-seo-platform/). In March 2020 it raised a $19 million Series B. Five Elms Capital led the round, and prior backer Beringea joined. The company now trades under a new name: [Deepcrawl is now Lumar](https://www.lumar.io/meet-lumar-our-new-brand/).

**Ask:** Did my contract carry over to the new brand without new terms, and where is that in writing?

## Content optimization tools.

### MarketMuse agreed to join Siteimprove.

MarketMuse sells [content analysis, content planning, and content brief tools](https://blog.marketmuse.com/siteimprove-to-acquire-marketmuse/). On October 8, 2024, it announced a definitive agreement to be acquired by Siteimprove. Siteimprove has a private-equity owner. [Nordic Capital became its majority owner](https://www.nordiccapital.com/news-views/press-releases/siteimprove-partners-with-nordic-capital-to-accelerate-growth) in a deal announced September 3, 2020. On 2026.10.03, [Nordic Capital's portfolio page](https://www.nordiccapital.com/portfolio-cases/investments/siteimprove/) listed Siteimprove among its investments, with a 2020 investment date.

**Ask:** Will MarketMuse stay a separate subscription, or will it move into a larger bundle at renewal?

### Surfer was acquired by Positive.

Surfer sells [SEO and GEO content optimization](https://positivegroup.com/news/positive-acquires-surfer). GEO means generative engine optimization, the work of showing up in AI answers. On October 21, 2025, Search Engine Journal reported that [Surfer was acquired by French technology group Positive](https://www.searchenginejournal.com/surfer-seo-acquired-by-positive-group/558918/). Positive is a corporate buyer, not a venture fund. The change of owner still matters to you as a buyer.

**Ask:** Will my plan's limits and price stay the same through my current term?

### Yoast is a Newfold Digital brand.

Yoast sells a [search engine optimization plugin for WordPress](https://siris.com/news/clearlake-and-siris-backed-newfold-digital-acquires-yoast-to-help-customers-get-found-online). On August 12, 2021, Newfold Digital announced it had acquired Yoast. The release describes Newfold Digital as backed by Clearlake Capital Group and Siris Capital Group. On 2026.10.03, [Newfold's brands page](https://newfold.com/brands) listed Yoast. A December 9, 2025 Domain Name Wire report [named Clearlake and Siris as Newfold's existing owners](https://domainnamewire.com/2025/12/09/newfold-digital-raises-100-million-from-existing-investors/).

**Ask:** What happens to my paid plugin subscription if Yoast changes how it bundles with hosting plans?

## AI search visibility platforms.

This category is new, and its rounds are recent. Expect the facts below to date fastest.

### Profound raised a Series D.

Profound sells a platform that helps businesses [control how they appear in AI responses](https://www.tryprofound.com/newsroom/profound-raises-35m-series-b-as-ai-search-becomes-the-next-platform-shift). On September 15, 2026, it [announced a $180 million Series D](https://www.tryprofound.com/newsroom/profound-raises-usd180m-series-d-at-usd1-8b-valuation-to-build-the-ai-platform-for-marketing-teams), co-led by Sequoia Capital and Kleiner Perkins. The release says the round came less than seven months after a $96 million Series C.

**Ask:** Which data sources feed my reports, and will you tell me before one changes?

### Peec AI raised a Series A.

Peec AI sells a [marketing platform for AI search](https://peec.ai/blog/we-raised-21m-series-a-to-help-brands-win-in-ai-search). On November 18, 2025, it announced a $21 million Series A led by Singular. The company says the round brought its total funding to $29 million.

**Ask:** Can I export my tracked prompts and results, and in what format?

### AirOps raised a Series B.

Built In NYC describes AirOps as an AI engineering platform that helps brands adapt to AI search. On November 10, 2025, it reported that [AirOps raised a $40 million Series B led by Greylock](https://www.builtinnyc.com/articles/airops-raises-40-million-to-help-brands-adapt-to-ai-search-20251110).

**Ask:** Who owns the content and workflows I build in your tool if I cancel?

## What funding means for you as a buyer.

A round, a listing, or a sale gives you no forecast. It tells you that the owner's goals may change. Run these checks before you renew any SEO tool on this list.

1. **Export your data now.** Run a full export of projects, tracked keywords, crawl history, and reports. Confirm that the files open as CSV or another format another tool can read. Do this before a renewal date, not after a notice.
2. **Read the assignment clause.** Find the contract term that says what happens if the vendor is sold. Note whether the buyer can change your terms during the current period.
3. **Find the price-change notice.** Look for the number of days of notice before a price increase. If the contract gives none, ask for it in writing.
4. **Check the renewal terms.** Note whether the plan renews on its own, and the last day to cancel. Put that date on a calendar.
5. **List what you built in the tool.** Dashboards, templates, and saved workflows often do not export. Decide what you would rebuild elsewhere.
6. **Ask where the data lives.** After a sale, the data can move to the parent company's systems. Ask which privacy terms apply and where they are published.
7. **Keep a second source.** For the one report you cannot lose, know which other tool or export could replace it.

These checks apply to bootstrapped vendors too. Funding news is a good prompt to run them.

## Answer the questions buyers ask.

**Is Semrush still an independent company?** No. Adobe announced the completion of its acquisition of Semrush on April 28, 2026. Semrush's customer FAQ, dated that same day, said existing contracts would not change at that time.

**Does a new funding round mean my price will go up?** Not necessarily. A round does not set a price. Check your contract for the price-change notice period, and ask for one in writing if it is missing.

**Which large SEO tool did not take outside money?** Ahrefs includes itself in its own list of bootstrapped SaaS companies. That list defines bootstrapped companies as those that grew without outside funding.

**How current is this list?** Every source was opened on 2026.10.03. Funding status changes, so check the company's newsroom or investor page before you act on any entry.

## Key Recap.

- Twelve SEO software companies on this page raised outside money, went public, or changed owners.
- Each fact carries a dated source opened on 2026.10.03; funding status changes after that date.
- A round or a sale is a reason to ask questions, not a forecast of price or product changes.
- Export your data, read the assignment clause, and find the price-change notice before you renew.
- Ahrefs is a large SEO tool that lists itself as bootstrapped.
