# Design pages that satisfy searchers and read engagement data without ranking myths.

A page ranks on page one, and most visitors leave within seconds. The design team says the page looks fine. The SEO team says "bounce rate hurts rankings." Neither claim tells anyone what to change.

User experience affects search, but not the way the common claim says. Google does not read your Google Analytics bounce rate. It does use page experience signals, and testimony in its 2023 antitrust trial described a system that uses click data. Visitors who find what they searched for also convert. This article separates what Google has documented from what analytics shows, then covers the design choices that keep visitors on the page. [SEO for UX designers](/articles/seo-for-ux-designers) covers how designers and the SEO team split the work.

## Separate what Google uses from what analytics shows

| Signal | Status | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Core Web Vitals, HTTPS, no intrusive interstitials, mobile usability | Documented page experience signals | Meet the thresholds; they are table stakes, not a boost |
| Click data from search | Testimony in US v. Google (2023) described NavBoost, a system that uses clicks | Earn the click with an honest title, then satisfy it |
| Bounce rate, time on page, scroll depth in GA4 | Google says it does not use Analytics data for ranking | Use them to diagnose your pages, not as ranking targets |
| Comments, social shares | Not ranking factors | Use them as signs of audience interest |

The practical rule follows from the table. Design each page so that a searcher who clicks finds the answer, trusts it, and has a reason to continue. That serves the documented signals, the click data, and the conversion rate at once. Bots or click farms that fake engagement produce patterns that search engines detect, and they risk a penalty.

## Reduce early exits

In Google Analytics 4, bounce rate is the share of sessions that were not engaged. GA4 counts a session as engaged when it lasts more than 10 seconds, has a key event, or has two or more page views. The older Universal Analytics bounce rate used a different definition, so do not compare the two.

Most early exits have one of six causes.

**The page breaks the promise of the search result.** The searcher read your title and description and clicked on that promise. If the page opens on something else, the visitor goes back. Match the title and the opening to the query intent.

**The first screen does not answer.** Visitors scan the headline, the first image, and the opening paragraph within seconds. An unclear or generic opening sends them away. [Above-the-fold optimization](/articles/ux-seo-above-fold-optimization) covers the first screen in detail.

**The visual hierarchy hides the key information.** Size, color, contrast, and position should lead the eye to what matters. If visitors must hunt for the answer, many do not.

**The page is slow.** Visitors abandon pages before the content appears. Google's September 2016 DoubleClick study, "The Need for Mobile Speed," found that 53 percent of mobile site visits end when a page takes longer than three seconds to load. The data reflects 2016 mobile networks, so treat it as a direction, not a current threshold.

**The page fails on a phone.** Tiny text, horizontal scrolling, and broken layouts push mobile visitors out.

**A pop-up covers the content.** Google's guidance counts intrusive interstitials that hide content on mobile as a negative page experience signal. Legal notices such as cookie consent and age checks are exempt. [Interstitials and pop-ups](/articles/interstitials-popups-seo-impact) covers which formats are safe.

## Hold attention on the page

Depth holds attention, if it is substance and not padding. A thorough article keeps a reader longer than a thin one, but an article stretched to a word count does not.

Set realistic expectations with reading speed. A 2019 review by Marc Brysbaert in the Journal of Memory and Language put adult silent reading of nonfiction at about 238 words per minute. For a worked example, a 1,500-word article takes a full reader about six minutes. If the median engaged time is 40 seconds, most visitors are not reading it through.

Format for sustained reading. Break long blocks into short paragraphs, add descriptive subheadings, and add visuals where they explain.

Give the reader a next step. Contextual links to related articles turn one-page visits into sessions. Interactive tools, such as calculators, quizzes, and configurators, hold attention because the visitor does something. Embedded video holds attention for its length plus the reading time, if the video adds value. Visitors skip video that repeats the text.

## Read interaction depth

Interaction data shows how far visitors get and what they use.

- **Scroll depth** shows where readers stop. A sharp drop at one position points to a problem at that position, such as a wall of text or an ad block.
- **Clicks** from heat maps show whether visitors use the calls to action, navigation, and internal links.
- **Form starts and abandons** show friction: too many fields, privacy concerns, or an unclear reason to finish.
- **Comments and shares** show interest. They are not ranking factors.
- **Return visits** show lasting value.

## Meet the page experience thresholds

Speed decides whether the visitor stays long enough to see the content. Google measures it with Core Web Vitals, at the 75th percentile of real visits:

| Metric | Measures | Good |
|---|---|---|
| Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) | Load time of the main content | 2.5 seconds or less |
| Interaction to Next Paint (INP) | Delay after a click, tap, or key press | 200 milliseconds or less |
| Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS) | Unexpected layout movement | 0.1 or less |

INP replaced First Input Delay (FID) as a Core Web Vital in March 2024. Time to Interactive (TTI) was removed from Lighthouse in 2023. In lab tests, Total Blocking Time is the closest stand-in for INP.

Slow LCP usually comes from a slow server, large images, or render-blocking files. Poor INP comes from long JavaScript tasks. High CLS comes from images without dimensions, late ads, and font swaps. Compress images, minify code, and use efficient formats. [The Core Web Vitals developer guide](/articles/core-web-vitals-developer-guide) covers the fixes.

## Design navigation that invites the next click

Visitors who cannot find the next page leave. Organize the content into a clear hierarchy of categories and subcategories that matches how visitors think about the subject.

Keep the main menu to the important sections. A mega menu suits a large site. A simple horizontal menu suits a small one. Add breadcrumbs so that visitors see where they are and can move up a level.

Give site search autocomplete, filters, and relevant ranking. A poor search box creates exits. Add a related-content module, such as "Related articles" or "Read next," at the point where a reader finishes. Use the footer for secondary paths to policies, contact details, and key categories.

## Build for the phone first

Since July 2024, Google crawls every site with its smartphone crawler. The mobile page is the version Google indexes.

- Use responsive design so that one page adapts to every screen.
- Make tap targets large enough. A common guideline is at least 48 by 48 CSS pixels. WCAG 2.2 sets a minimum of 24 by 24.
- Set the viewport meta tag, or phones show the desktop layout at a tiny scale.
- Use body text of about 16 pixels or larger, so that visitors do not need to zoom.
- Cut form fields to the minimum. Use the right input types, such as `email` and `tel`, so that the phone shows the right keyboard.
- Place key actions within thumb reach. Bottom navigation bars suit phones better than menus at the top.

## Format for scanning and reading

Short paragraphs look easier to read and leave white space. Descriptive subheadings let visitors jump to the section they need. Lists present items in a series faster than a sentence does. Bold text guides the eye to key points, but overuse cancels the effect. Relevant images clarify concepts. Decorative images that explain nothing add load time.

Readable sentences keep the reader moving. Keep sentences short on average and vary their length. Match the vocabulary to the audience: technical readers accept jargon, and general readers need plain language.

Use active voice so that each sentence names who does what. Define a technical term at its first use. Connect ideas with transitions such as "however" and "therefore." A readability score, such as the Flesch-Kincaid grade level, gives a rough check against the audience's level.

## Design calls to action that match intent

A conversion is the strongest sign that a page met the visitor's need.

Make the call to action visible through size, contrast, and position. Write copy that says what happens, such as "Download the guide" or "Start a trial," not "Submit" or "Click here." State the benefit to the visitor. Remove friction: long forms, forced account creation, and extra steps all cut conversions.

Use urgency only when it is real. A real deadline motivates action. A fake countdown timer erodes trust. Offer more than one path, such as a newsletter signup, a trial, and a download. Visitors arrive with different levels of intent.

Weight each page by its purpose. On content pages, aim for engagement and the next click. On commercial pages, aim for the conversion.

## Show trust signals early

Visitors judge credibility in seconds. A dated or broken design undermines trust in the content.

Show the author with a short bio and relevant credentials. Show the publication date and the date of the last substantial update. Cite sources with links. Serve the site over HTTPS, and link the privacy policy. Make contact details easy to find, because hidden contact information raises suspicion.

## Measure and test engagement

Set up GA4 to track the behavior that matters. Track scroll depth, video plays, file downloads, form interactions, and custom events for your key actions. Mark the actions that count as success as key events.

Heat-mapping tools such as Hotjar and Crazy Egg show where visitors click, scroll, and hover. Session recordings show real visits and reveal friction that averages hide. Surveys, feedback widgets, and user tests explain why visitors behave as they do. Cohort analysis shows how different segments behave, so that you can fix the problem for the segment that has it. [CRO and SEO data analysis](/articles/cro-seo-data-analysis) covers how to combine these sources.

Test design changes with A/B tests and wait for statistical significance before you roll them out. Judge bounce rate by page type, not by a universal number. As a rough guide, many blog posts show high bounce rates because visitors get the answer and leave, which can be a success. Product and category pages with strong internal paths usually show lower rates. Compare each page with its own history and with pages of the same type.

Ranking changes from UX work are slow and hard to isolate. Track conversions and engaged sessions as the direct result, and treat organic gains as a lagging effect.
