# How to Transfer ChatGPT History to Perplexity Without Mistaking an Export for Memory.

A research team exports ChatGPT, uploads a few files to Perplexity, and cancels the old account. The archive exists, but the working system does not. Project instructions, source roles, plugins, decisions, and open research jobs did not become portable memory.

Perplexity's current help center says it does not support other providers' chat conversations, GPTs, or stored information. It also does not install ChatGPT plugins. [Perplexity: Transfer data from ChatGPT or Claude](https://www.perplexity.ai/help-center/en/articles/10354972-can-i-install-chatgpt-plugins-or-transfer-data-from-chatgpt-or-claude-ai)

Treat the move as a workflow reconstruction. Preserve the ChatGPT export, promote the records that still matter, rebuild the research space, and prove one recurring job.

## Chat history, saved memory, and business memory are different

Chat history is a conversation archive. It contains questions, generated answers, attachments, false starts, and decisions of uncertain status.

Saved or synthesized product memory is context maintained by the provider for future responses. It does not necessarily expose every source or preserve the complete record.

Business memory is the approved set of facts, decisions, sources, corrections, procedures, open work, and boundaries that a job needs. The company must be able to inspect and transfer it.

An export can preserve evidence from the first category. It does not automatically recreate the second or establish the third.

The [ChatGPT archive triage guide](/articles/what-to-keep-from-ai-chat-archive) helps separate durable records from noise.

## Preserve what ChatGPT gives you

For an eligible account, open **Settings → Data controls → Export data → Export**, then confirm the request. OpenAI sends the download link by email or SMS; the ZIP includes chat history and other account data. Managed Business, Enterprise, and Healthcare workspaces do not provide this self-service export, so ask the workspace owner for the approved access route. [OpenAI: Exporting your ChatGPT history and data](https://help.openai.com/en/articles/7260999-how-do-i-export-my-chatgpt-history-and-data)

OpenAI says the export can take up to 7 days to arrive and the download link expires 24 hours after you receive it. Request the export before the cutover date, not on it.

Store the untouched archive in an approved location. Record the account, request date, received date, file hash, and access owner.

Create a separate review folder. Do not reorganize the raw archive in place.

```text
chatgpt-to-perplexity/
  raw/chatgpt-export.zip
  raw/export.sha256
  review/triage.csv
  promoted/source-records/
  promoted/research-brief.md
  perplexity/workspace-map.md
  tests/recurring-research-job.md
  receipts/migration-receipt.md
```

The archive may contain credentials, personal information, or client material. Do not upload it wholesale to another service.

## Identify what Perplexity cannot import

Write an unsupported-objects list before rebuilding:

- prior chat conversations as active Perplexity threads;
- custom GPT configuration;
- ChatGPT stored memory;
- ChatGPT plugins;
- hidden product state or tool permissions;
- approvals that existed only in conversation;
- attachments missing from the export packet;
- external app state.

Some content can be copied into a file or recreated manually. That is reconstruction, not native transfer. For testing memory across fresh Perplexity conversations, read [Perplexity Memory Across Conversations: Test Continuity.](/articles/perplexity-memory-across-conversations-missing-history)

Document the destination for every required object. Mark anything without a destination as a blocker or accepted loss.

## Move source records before summaries

A summary is useful for orientation. It should not replace the sources that support a research claim.

Promote current materials into an owned packet:

- research question and decision deadline;
- approved source policy;
- primary documents and stable URLs;
- claims with supporting sources;
- rejected claims and reason;
- current conclusions labeled by date;
- open questions;
- output format and stopping point.

Keep generated ChatGPT answers as evidence only. Recheck important claims against original sources.

The migration in [moving ChatGPT history into business memory](/articles/migrate-chatgpt-history-to-business-memory) provides the promotion and rejection pattern.

## Rebuild a Project around current work

Create a new Perplexity Project only after the source packet is clean. Use the smallest approved set of files and instructions for one research job.

As checked September 19, 2026, Perplexity calls this workspace a Project; older help URLs still say `spaces`. Open Projects, create the test Project, then upload the selected files through its Files area. Inspect the uploaded copies before running the job. A file upload supplies context; it does not import ChatGPT conversations as native sessions. [Perplexity: What are Projects?](https://www.perplexity.ai/help-center/en/articles/10352961-what-are-spaces)

Record:

- owner and account;
- workspace identifier;
- purpose;
- approved files;
- source requirements;
- excluded material;
- output path;
- sharing scope;
- review owner;
- retirement procedure.

Do not treat the Project as the only copy of the research record. Keep canonical files outside the product and record the upload or connection version.

If the job requires a capability that a ChatGPT plugin previously supplied, evaluate a Perplexity-native route or a separate tool. Do not assume feature equivalence.

## Preserve citations and decision provenance

Research migration fails when conclusions move but their evidence does not.

For each promoted claim, keep the source URL or file identifier, publication or effective date, retrieval date, and reviewer. Record whether the source is primary, secondary, or generated commentary.

For each decision, keep who accepted it, when it took effect, and which evidence supported it. A chat sentence such as "let's do that" is not enough when the speaker or scope is unclear.

Require the rebuilt workflow to cite current sources. If a source is missing or inaccessible, the job should report the gap.

## Inspect `chatgpt-to-perplexity-migration-checklist.md`

```markdown
# ChatGPT to Perplexity migration checklist
raw_export:: preserved and hashed
triage_queue:: review/triage.csv
current_sources:: promoted/source-records/
unsupported_objects:: plugins, GPT config, prior chats, stored memory
destination_space:: pending
fixture:: tests/recurring-research-job.md
required_claims:: CLAIM-01, CLAIM-02
rejected_claim:: CLAIM-OLD
must_include:: primary citations, source dates, unresolved questions
must_not:: treat old ChatGPT answer as authority, publish, email
rollback:: owned packet remains available outside both products
```

Make each line observable. "Transferred context" is not an acceptance result.

## Test one recurring research job

Choose a task the team performs every week, such as a competitor change brief. For the broader research and memory comparison between the two tools, read [ChatGPT vs Perplexity Memory for Business.](/articles/chatgpt-vs-perplexity-memory-business)

Freeze a synthetic or approved source packet. Include one superseded source, one unsupported claim from an old ChatGPT answer, and one current primary source. Run the old and rebuilt workflows.

The Perplexity route must:

1. use the current primary source;
2. reject the superseded source;
3. avoid the unsupported old claim;
4. preserve citations in the output;
5. identify one intentionally missing source;
6. stop before publication or send;
7. write a receipt with workspace, files, and output hash.

Do not compare prose similarity. Compare claim support, source coverage, decision, and stopping state.

## Cut over, cancel, and delete in that order

First, accept the recurring-job test. Next, operate both routes long enough to confirm the rebuilt workflow. Then document the cutover and rollback point.

Cancellation and deletion are separate decisions. Before either, verify billing, shared assets, retention, exports, account ownership, and dependencies. Use the [AI subscription shutdown test](/articles/ai-subscription-shutdown-test) for that proof.

Do not delete the raw export because the destination works once. Retain or dispose of it according to the company's data policy.

## Approval and stopping boundary

The migration may request and hash an export, review evidence, create an owned source packet, build a synthetic Perplexity workspace, and run draft-only research tests.

It stops before uploading the full archive, moving client data, connecting live systems, sharing a workspace externally, canceling ChatGPT, deleting either account, or changing retention. The account owner, data owner, and budget owner approve those actions.

If the required source cannot be separated from sensitive archive material, the migration stops until the data owner defines an approved extraction route.

## Questions about How to Transfer ChatGPT History to Perplexity Without Mistaking an Export for Memory

### Can I transfer data from ChatGPT or Claude into Perplexity?

Use the original export as source evidence, identify current records, and rebuild the Perplexity research workspace around those records. Treat the archive as material to review rather than ready context for the new workspace.

### How do I move my ChatGPT context into Perplexity Spaces?

Create the Space from current source documents, a scoped instruction file, and a project index that names open work and accepted decisions. Preserve citations and provenance, then test one recurring research job before relying on the new workspace.

### Will a ChatGPT export make Perplexity remember my old conversations?

An export is evidence, not an automatic memory layer or restored conversation state. Extract the records that should govern future work, reject stale model output, and test whether Perplexity uses the selected sources and citations correctly.
