Check the website policy, relevant product exceptions, account settings, and structured data. Editing the public page alone is not a complete investigation. Google documents several ways to supply return policies. It gives account settings in Merchant Center or Search Console precedence over product-level and organization-level markup. This article covers website and search-data consistency. Ask the person responsible for your store policy to approve the terms before a website editor copies them. ## Establish which policy applies to the product Save the current approved policy and its effective date. Choose the product and destination country involved in the mismatch. Identify any exception that changes the ordinary store terms. Compare the public wording with the approved record. Separate the return window, allowed method, fees, and process for starting a request. Mark an unclear term for the policy owner instead of choosing a replacement yourself. Keep the old public wording with your repair request. A screenshot of an incorrect search display is useful evidence, but it does not identify the source that supplied it. ## Map the places that publish return information Give your website maintainer and account manager this proposed worksheet: | Source | What to inspect | What to record | | --- | --- | --- | | Store policy page | Current approved terms | Page address and effective version | | Product page | Any specific exception | Affected product and visible wording | | Merchant Center | Applicable account policy | Country, policy identity, and settings | | Search Console | Any configured return policy | Authorized manager's confirmed values | | Structured data | Organization and product offer policies | Extracted values and generating template | | Connected integration | Settings it supplies or overwrites | Maintainer and controlling system | Request current outputs from each owner. Avoid assuming that a theme setting controls an account-level policy or that a plugin setting is the only markup on the page. ## Distinguish store policy from product exceptions Google supports a standard policy using `MerchantReturnPolicy` under `Organization`. It also supports product-specific policies under an `Offer`, with a more limited property set. Ask the developer to identify which scope the generated markup uses. If the product has an approved exception, confirm how that exception reaches the page and the applicable data source. Do not paste a sample return window into production. Use only values that the policy owner approved. Leave an unresolved value out of a proposed implementation until its meaning is settled. ## Resolve the controlling source Compare the conflicting values with Google's documented precedence. The documentation places account settings above product markup, and product markup above organization markup. Review any integration that supplies higher-priority settings too. Include the approved value, affected products or countries, and person responsible. If an integration will overwrite a manual edit, require its maintainer to explain the durable correction. Keep technical format questions with the developer. Keep the policy decision with the store. A developer should not select your return terms to remove a warning. ## Accept the correction with dated evidence After the approved repair, compare the public page and relevant account settings again. Ask for the generated markup values where applicable. Check a normal product and a product exception if both exist. Save the observed search display separately. Until it changes, record the website or account repair as completed and the public search observation as pending. Do not claim that a valid markup test guarantees a particular display. Name one owner for future policy updates. Include the public page, account settings, exceptions, and generating integration in the update checklist.
