Keep energy production, utility charges, and the customer's payment arrangement separate. Remove a number when you cannot show where it came from. The Department of Energy explains that savings depend on electricity use, system size and output, purchase or lease arrangements, utility rates, and compensation for exported electricity. Use this article to prepare a copy review with the person responsible for your proposals. The worksheet is an editorial method, not a savings calculation. ## Inventory the claims before rewriting them Collect the home page, service pages, project examples, quote forms, downloadable documents, and advertising landing pages you control. Copy each savings statement exactly into a private review sheet. Record the claim's location and supporting document. Ask who approved the calculation and when its inputs were checked. Keep an unsupported statement marked unresolved until it is fixed or removed. Do not limit the review to prominent headlines. Include captions, charts, small print, calculator outputs, and form confirmations. Compare repeated statements so a corrected page does not leave an old promise elsewhere. ## Separate production from money Ask the technical reviewer to identify the production estimate and its assumptions. Ask the proposal owner to identify the separate cost comparison. Keep those records linked without treating them as interchangeable. The FTC says solar output depends on system size, sunlight, roof characteristics, and environmental conditions. It also explains that customers may continue buying electricity and paying utility fixed charges. Use the proposed review fields below: | Claim type | Evidence to obtain | | --- | --- | | Estimated energy output | Dated technical estimate and relevant site assumptions | | Utility-bill comparison | Usage, tariff source, fixed charges, and comparison period | | Customer payment | Actual proposal structure and approved payment terms | | Project example | Permission, source calculation, date, and limits of comparison | | Guarantee | Exact approved written obligation and responsible party | | Incentive statement | Current administering authority and applicability review | Do not convert a production estimate into a guaranteed financial result. Keep a contract guarantee distinct from a modeled example. ## Show what a published example represents For a project example, identify the approved date and what the number measures. State whether the figure came from a model or a documented observation. Keep private utility records out of the published evidence. Have the reviewer explain the example's boundaries in plain language. If an example excludes financing or continuing utility charges, review how the page communicates those exclusions. Do not allow a headline to imply a broader result. Avoid inventing a typical customer from a convenient past job. Where you lack support for typicality, describe only the documented example or remove the comparison. ## Recheck changing inputs at their source The FTC warns that future utility rates are difficult to predict. Its guide recommends comparing detailed bids and checking that contracts match advertised claims. For an incentive statement, open the administering authority's current rules. Record the jurisdiction, applicable period, reviewer, and next review trigger. This checklist supplies no current incentive amount or eligibility determination. A general solar guide does not establish a particular customer's entitlement. Leave the claim out until the correct authority and reviewer support it. ## Rewrite uncertainty without hiding the question Replace an unsupported universal savings promise with an explanation of the assessment. A proposed direction is: “Request a site-specific comparison using your electricity use and the proposal's stated assumptions.” Have the office approve that wording against its actual process. If the company does not provide the comparison described, change the wording again. Keep necessary qualifications beside the claim they explain. Request a phone-screen review so the statement and its conditions remain readable together. Do not place all limitations in an unrelated footer. ## Approve the revised page against the evidence sheet Match each final claim to its approved source. Check that removed claims also disappear from metadata, downloadable copies, and visible form responses where applicable. Save the reviewed copy, source dates, and unresolved questions. Assign a person to update the page when the underlying offer or source changes.
