# Use social media to earn links and brand searches instead of chasing social signals.

For a decade, marketers have argued about whether social media affects SEO. Google has said that social metrics are not ranking factors. Social activity still changes search results, but through indirect paths. Content distribution earns links. Brand awareness raises brand searches. Profiles fill the results for your company name.

The distinction decides where the effort goes. A team that posts to raise engagement "for SEO" works toward a mechanism that does not exist. A team that posts to reach people who link, and people who later search for the brand, works toward mechanisms that do. This article separates the two and shows how to measure the result.

## Separate what Google said from what marketers assume

### Social metrics are not ranking factors

Google's John Mueller and Gary Illyes have said many times that likes, shares, followers, and engagement are not ranking factors. Google's ranking systems do not query Facebook, Instagram, X, or LinkedIn for engagement counts.

Many teams still spend social effort on the stated goal of better organic rankings. Justify social work by what it actually produces, not by a ranking signal that Google denies.

### Google indexes public social pages

Google does index public social pages. Your LinkedIn page, X profile, and YouTube channel appear in search results. For a search of your company name, these profiles take places on page one. They also feed information into the knowledge panel and help Google connect the profiles to your brand as one entity.

Treat the profiles as part of the results for your brand name. Consistent names, complete business information, and links to your website make that set of results stronger.

### Correlation is not cause

Studies often find that pages with more social shares rank higher. That does not mean shares cause rankings. Strong content tends to earn both shares and rankings. The shared cause is content quality. [Social signals and SEO](/articles/seo-social-media-signals) looks at the studies in more detail.

## Work the four indirect mechanisms

### Mechanism 1: distribution that earns links

Social media puts content in front of people who can link to it. A post on LinkedIn reaches marketing directors who run websites. A research report shared on X reaches journalists who cite sources. The share itself does not change rankings. The links that follow from it can.

This works only for content that people want to cite: original research, data visualizations, complete guides, tools, and frameworks. Routine content gets engagement on social platforms but earns no links.

### Mechanism 2: brand search demand

A social campaign that raises brand awareness can raise brand searches. People see your brand on Instagram or TikTok and later search its name on Google. Many SEOs treat growing brand demand as a sign of authority that helps non-brand rankings. Google has not confirmed brand search volume as a ranking signal. Treat the link as a hypothesis, and test it with your own data.

You can see the first half of the chain directly. After a post that reaches many people, watch brand queries in Search Console for two to four weeks. Do the same after a sustained brand campaign.

### Mechanism 3: control of the brand-name results

When someone searches your company name, aim to own as many page-one results as you can. Your website usually takes one to three places. Social profiles can take three to five more. Review sites, news articles, and directories take the rest.

Profiles with consistent names, complete business information, website links, and regular activity rank more reliably for the brand name. This is not a ranking factor for other pages. It is control over the page that a buyer sees when they check your company. [Social profiles in the brand search results](/articles/brand-serp-social-profiles) covers each platform.

### Mechanism 4: faster discovery of new pages

Google discovers new pages mostly through links and sitemaps. Links on social platforms usually carry `nofollow`. Google treats `nofollow` as a hint, so a social share may or may not help Google find a page sooner. For news, trend analysis, and product launches, fast discovery matters. For evergreen content, the effect is marginal. A sitemap update and the URL Inspection tool in Search Console are more reliable ways to get a page crawled.

## Run four strategies that support SEO

### Distribute link-worthy content to people who link

List the audiences most likely to link to you: bloggers, journalists, industry analysts, newsletter writers, and other creators. Target them when you distribute content.

On LinkedIn, engage with the editors of industry publications and the freelance journalists who cover your field. On X, join conversations where industry writers and analysts take part. The goal is not engagement numbers. The goal is to reach people with websites who may cite your content.

One well-targeted LinkedIn post that reaches 50 industry journalists can do more for search than 100 posts that only existing followers see. Measure distribution by who it reaches, not by how often you post.

### Test whether social activity raises brand searches

Run a brand campaign on social media for 30 days. Compare brand queries in Search Console for three periods. Use the 30 days before, the 30 days of the campaign, and the 30 days after. If brand queries rise and the rise follows the campaign timeline, you have evidence for your brand. If they do not rise, the campaign did not move search demand.

### Pair each key article with a YouTube video

Google shows YouTube videos in its main results, especially for how-to, tutorial, and review queries. Video optimized for YouTube search reaches demand that text does not reach.

Pair a text article optimized for Google with a video optimized for YouTube. The video description links to the article. The article embeds the video. Each can rank on its own. [YouTube SEO for social media teams](/articles/youtube-seo-social-media-teams) covers the video side.

### Mine social conversations for keywords

Social conversations show the words your audience uses for its problems. Those words often differ from the terms that keyword tools suggest. Read the discussions on Reddit, LinkedIn, and niche communities in your field. Note the questions and phrases that keyword research missed.

Reddit is especially useful. Google has shown Reddit threads more often since 2023, and it signed a data agreement with Reddit in February 2024. A topic with active Reddit discussion and few good articles is often search demand that nobody serves well.

## Use each platform for what it does for search

| Platform | What it does for search | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| LinkedIn | Google indexes posts and articles, which can rank for long-tail professional queries | Publish a condensed version with a clear link to the full article on your site |
| Reddit | Threads rank for experience queries, such as "is [product] worth it" | Contribute real expertise; do not promote |
| TikTok and Instagram | Short videos with large reach can drive brand searches | Watch Search Console for brand-query increases two to four weeks after a video reaches many people |
| Pinterest | Pins keep bringing visits for months, where an X post fades within hours | Pin visual content, such as infographics, product photos, and process diagrams, that links to your site |

### LinkedIn for business-to-business search

The search opportunity on LinkedIn is not LinkedIn's own search. It is Google's index of LinkedIn content. A LinkedIn article titled "how to evaluate enterprise software vendors" can rank on Google for that query. It sends searchers to your LinkedIn presence and from there to your site. The LinkedIn version collects engagement on the platform. The full version on your website collects organic traffic and conversions.

### Reddit for visibility at the research stage

Honest participation in the right subreddits builds visibility that on-site SEO cannot. Answer questions, share expertise, and let your profile carry the connection to your business. Reddit users and moderators detect promotional posts and remove them. This is not a link-building tactic. The benefit is that threads which mention your brand or content rank on Google and reach buyers who are comparing options.

### Pinterest for visual content

Each Pin links to a page on your site and gives it a lasting referral path. Pinterest links carry `nofollow`, so the value is referral traffic, not link authority. The traffic per Pin is small, but it adds up across hundreds of Pins. [Pinterest SEO for social media teams](/articles/pinterest-seo-social-media) covers Pin optimization.

## Build the integrated plan in three steps

1. Audit the current interaction between social and search.
2. Classify your content by the channel it serves.
3. Build one dashboard that shows both channels on a shared timeline.

### Step 1: audit the current interaction

Pull social referral data from Google Analytics 4 for every platform. Note which platforms send visitors who engage and convert, and which send visitors who leave at once. Compare the dates of social posts with the dates of new backlinks in Ahrefs to find distribution patterns.

### Step 2: classify the content

Not all content works in both channels. Original research usually works in both: people share it and people link to it. A complete guide works for search but needs a new format for social. A provocative opinion works on social but may have no search demand.

Put every planned piece in one of three classes. Search-first content is built to rank and uses social for distribution. Social-first content is built for engagement and may help search as a side effect. Dual-channel content is built for both from the start.

### Step 3: build a shared dashboard

Show social activity and SEO performance on one timeline. The dashboard should answer three questions. When social activity rises, do new backlinks rise? When a post reaches many people, do brand searches rise? When social referral traffic grows, does organic traffic follow?

The dashboard does not prove cause. It shows the patterns, so that the team can invest in the mechanisms that produce results.

## Measure the social effect on search

### Use a control group for links

Track backlinks earned within 30 days of social distribution. Compare them with the links earned by content that you published without social promotion. The unpromoted content is the control group. The difference estimates what distribution adds. Check new backlinks by date in Ahrefs or Semrush.

### Monitor brand queries

Open the Search Console Performance report. Filter queries with a regular expression that matches your brand name and its common misspellings. Record brand impressions and clicks each month, and mark the dates of social campaigns. Expect a lag of two to four weeks between sustained social activity and brand search changes.

### Score control of the brand-name results

Search your brand name once a month. Count how many of the top 10 results you control: website pages, social profiles, and owned media. A rising score means your profiles and web presence are gaining ground.

### Compare referral traffic quality

In GA4, look at social visitors who land on pages built for search. Compare their engagement rate and conversion rate with those of organic visitors. The comparison shows whether social sends qualified visitors.

### Put a value on the gains

Count the extra organic clicks in the 90 days after the new links. Multiply that number by the cost per click you would pay for the same keywords in Google Ads. For example, 500 extra organic clicks per month are worth 500 times that cost per click each month. Over a year, that is 6,000 times the cost per click.

## Stop four tactics that do not work

**Bought engagement.** Purchased followers, likes, and shares bring no links, no brand searches, and no real audience. Spend that budget on content that earns real engagement.

**Identical posts on every platform.** Each platform has its own audience expectations. A LinkedIn post about a guide needs a different angle than an X thread about the same guide. Native formats get more engagement, and more engagement reaches more people who link.

**Social metrics as SEO KPIs.** Likes, comments, and shares measure social performance. As SEO measures, they give false confidence. Three social measures matter for search: links earned by distributed content, changes in brand search, and the quality of social referral traffic.

**Incomplete profiles.** Profiles with no website link, mismatched descriptions, or old information still rank for your brand name, and they look neglected. Treat each profile like a landing page. Give it complete information, consistent branding, recent posts, and a clear link to your website.

## Keep the teams separate and the calendar shared

The SEO team should not run social media. Specialists run each channel, and they coordinate through a shared content calendar. The SEO team picks topics and link-worthy assets. The social team distributes them in formats that suit each platform.

Social media does not hurt SEO directly. Google does not penalize a site for social activity or for its absence. It can hurt indirectly, through the hours it takes.

A team that spends 30 hours a week on social media and 5 on search content has its priorities reversed for organic growth. A social post fades in hours or days. An article that ranks keeps bringing visits for years. [Brand search lift](/articles/brand-search-lift-seo) shows how to report the brand-demand side to leadership.
