# Own the five SEO jobs that belong to social media and show what they add to search.

Your KPIs are engagement rate, follower growth, and reach. Your CEO asks why organic traffic is flat. SEO seems like someone else's job.

Then you notice three things. Your social profiles appear on page one when people search the company name. Posts that your team promoted earned links from other sites. Some of your posts appear in Google results.

Social media and search are connected. A social media manager who knows which SEO work belongs to the role adds value that lasts past the week's engagement numbers. You do not become an SEO specialist. You make the social assets easy to find outside the platform feeds.

This article defines five SEO jobs that belong to a social media manager, the jobs that do not, and how to measure the result.

## Job 1: optimize the social profiles

Company profiles on LinkedIn, X, Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube often rank on page one for a search of the company name. Many people see those profiles before they reach the website.

Work through each profile in this order:

1. Write a bio that names what the company does. "Acme Corp | Email marketing automation for SaaS companies" tells Google and people the category. "We help businesses grow" tells them nothing.
2. Use the same handle on every platform, such as `@acmecorp`. Consistent names help Google connect the profiles to one brand.
3. Link the profile to the homepage or a key landing page.
4. Add UTM parameters to that link so that GA4 reports the visits by source, for example `?utm_source=linkedin&utm_medium=profile&utm_campaign=social`.
5. Match the profile image, cover image, and bio across platforms.

Verification helps people identify the real account. Treat it as a trust signal for users, not a ranking lever. On X, the checkmark has come with a paid subscription since 2023. [Social profiles in the brand search results](/articles/brand-serp-social-profiles) covers which profiles tend to rank and in what order.

## Job 2: distribute content that earns links

Links from other sites remain one of Google's ranking signals. Social media is how many writers, journalists, and bloggers first see content they later cite. Your job is to put linkable content in front of those people.

### Lead with the finding, not the announcement

"New blog post is live" with a link gives nobody a reason to click. Pull the most useful finding from the article, lead with it, and then link. For a research piece, a post such as "We analyzed 10,000 email campaigns. [The main finding.] Full report: [link]" gives a journalist a reason to read and to cite.

### Aim data at people who link

Original research, surveys, and statistics pages earn the most links. When you share them, tag the relevant industry publications and the journalists who cover the topic. Customer success stories also get cited in industry articles. Post them with visuals, such as metrics and before-and-after screenshots. Publish only results that the customer approved.

### Co-promote with partners

Partner with complementary brands on joint content. When two companies announce a partnership, both can publish a post that links to the other. The social posts announce it and the blog posts carry the links.

### Track what social distribution earns

Check new backlinks to shared articles in Ahrefs or Semrush. Compare the dates of new links with the dates of your social posts. Check social referral visits in GA4 under Reports, Acquisition, Traffic acquisition, with the Organic Social channel. Not every post earns a link. For data-driven or newsworthy content, one or two new links per month from social distribution is a realistic aim.

## Job 3: manage the branded search results

When someone searches your company name, Google shows a mix of your website, social profiles, review sites, and news. Social profiles often fill several of the top 10 places. Page one of that search is part of your brand, and much of it is yours to shape.

Claim every relevant profile and post to each one regularly. A profile that stays inactive for months tends to drop off page one.

Search your brand name and note the "People also ask" questions. Answer those questions in posts on LinkedIn and X, where Google can index them. Set up Google Alerts for the brand name. Respond on social media when someone mentions you, and thank publishers who cover you. Those relationships lead to future links.

If a negative review or article ranks for your brand name, you cannot remove it by force. You can publish fresh, useful content on the assets you own, and you can earn links to your website and to positive coverage. Over time, stronger owned results can move the negative result down. [Brand search lift](/articles/brand-search-lift-seo) explains how to measure brand demand.

## Job 4: publish social content that can rank in Google

Some social content appears in Google results. Indexing differs by platform:

| Platform | How Google shows its content |
|---|---|
| X | Google shows X posts for news, trending topics, and brand queries. |
| LinkedIn | Public posts and articles can rank, often for professional queries. |
| YouTube | Videos rank in Google web results, video results, and YouTube search. |
| Instagram | Since July 10, 2025, public posts from professional accounts can be indexed, and the account can opt out. |
| Facebook | Public pages can rank for brand queries. Most personal and group content is not indexed. |

### Put the topic words in the post

If the target keyword is "email marketing automation," use the phrase where it reads naturally. For example: "We published our guide to email marketing automation for SaaS teams: [link]."

### Publish excerpts, not copies

A LinkedIn article of 300 to 600 words, taken from a blog post, can rank for professional queries. Link it to the full blog post. Do not post the complete article on LinkedIn, because the copy then competes with your own page.

### Optimize YouTube videos

Put the target keyword in the title where it reads naturally. Put the keyword and the call to action in the first 150 characters of the description. Upload an accurate caption file, because captions give Google and YouTube the spoken text. YouTube says tags play a minimal role in discovery, so add a few, mainly for common misspellings. [YouTube SEO for social media teams](/articles/youtube-seo-social-media-teams) covers video optimization in full.

### Structure threads and carousels as steps

A thread on X or a carousel on LinkedIn that works as a step-by-step guide can match "how to" queries. Each tweet or slide is a small section that Google can extract.

Aim for two or three posts per month that appear in Google results. Check them by searching the target keywords, or search `site:x.com "your brand" "keyword"` for X. X moved from `twitter.com` to `x.com` in 2024.

## Job 5: collect customer content

Reviews, customer posts, and mentions add fresh content about your brand across the web.

Ask happy customers for Google Business Profile reviews. Reviews help local search. A post such as "Liked our service? Leave a review: [link]" is enough. When customers post about your product, repost them to your profile. A branded hashtag, such as `#AcmeSuccess`, makes those posts easy to find and repost.

Turn the best customer stories into case studies on the blog, and share those on social media. When the customer shares their own feature, it often brings another link. A realistic target is 5 to 10 customer posts per month that you repost or tag.

## Hand off the SEO work that is not yours

A social media manager optimizes social assets for search. The website belongs to other roles:

| Work | Owner |
|---|---|
| Technical SEO: site speed, canonical tags, `robots.txt`, schema markup | SEO team or developers |
| Keyword research for the website | SEO or content team |
| On-page optimization: title tags, H1s, internal links | SEO or content team |
| Link-building outreach by email | SEO specialist or link builder |
| Deep analysis in Google Analytics and Search Console | SEO analyst or manager |

Spend about 10 to 20 percent of your week on the five jobs above. The rest remains engagement, content, and community work. Most of the SEO work is a layer on top of what you already do, not a separate project.

## Work with the other teams

The five jobs depend on four other teams. With the SEO team, share the social posts that perform best as topics for articles. Report the links that your distribution earned. With the content team, ask for early access to new articles so that you can plan promotion. Tell the content team which topics your audience engages with. Repurpose articles into social posts, as [the social-to-search repurposing guide](/articles/social-media-content-seo-repurposing) describes.

With the PR team, plan the social posts for each press release, and tag the journalists who cover the story. With the product team, pass on customer feedback from social channels, promote launches, and collect testimonials.

## Measure the effect on search

Report five measures each month:

1. **Brand demand**: Google Trends shows relative interest in the brand name over time, on a 0 to 100 scale. It does not show absolute volume. Search Console shows actual branded impressions and clicks.
2. **Social referral traffic**: GA4 sessions from the Organic Social channel.
3. **Links from distribution**: new backlinks to shared content in Ahrefs or Semrush, matched to post dates.
4. **Profile positions**: search the brand name once per month and record where each profile ranks.
5. **Indexed posts**: count posts that appear in Google for your target keywords.

Google says that likes and shares are not direct ranking factors. The link is indirect: social reach puts content in front of people who later link to it, and links affect rankings. Report the chain, not a claim that engagement moves rankings.

To make the case to leadership, report links and positions, not engagement alone. For example: "Our LinkedIn posts earned three links this quarter. Link outreach would need paid effort to earn the same links. Our profiles hold positions two to five for the brand name." Tie each claim to its report.

If you have no paid SEO tool, ask the SEO team for Search Console access. Google Analytics, Google Trends, Google Alerts, and manual searches cover the rest.

## Use a small tool stack

The essential tools are a scheduler such as Buffer or Hootsuite, Canva for graphics, and Google Analytics for referral traffic. Shared access to Ahrefs or Semrush lets you check links. BuzzSumo shows which content gets shared in your field. Brand24 or Mention monitors brand mentions across the web. Google Trends, Google Alerts, and X Advanced Search are free. [Social signals and SEO](/articles/seo-social-media-signals) explains which social measures relate to rankings and which do not.
