Define the pages and functions to build. Then define who keeps them current, maintains the underlying services, and fixes a failed inquiry path. Use the scope worksheet below to compare proposals on the same work. These are recommended contract questions, rather than a standard package or a price estimate. ## Write the launch scope as observable behavior List the pages, approved content, and visitor actions the site must support. Name who supplies the text, photographs, business details, and service terms. Identify who approves each item. Replace a broad line such as "contact form included" with a checkable requirement. Specify the fields, destination, confirmation message, and receipt test. Keep the example free of real customer information. Google recommends descriptive page titles, useful content, and crawlable links in its starter guide. Treat those as requirements to discuss with the builder, rather than accepting an unexplained "SEO included" label. [Google's SEO starter guide, checked 2026.10.23](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/fundamentals/seo-starter-guide). ## Separate ongoing jobs before comparing fees Ask each provider to fill in the same worksheet: | Work area | Question for the proposal | Acceptance evidence | | --- | --- | --- | | Content edits | Which changes are included, and who supplies them? | Approved text visible at the agreed address | | Hosting and domain | Who holds the accounts and pays each renewal? | Owner-accessible account and renewal record | | Software maintenance | Which components are maintained, and by whom? | Dated maintenance record for the scoped components | | Backup and recovery | What is saved, and how is recovery checked? | Agreed recovery test with a recorded result | | Inquiry delivery | Who investigates a missing request? | Labeled test received at the approved destination | | New features | How are additions quoted and approved? | Separate written scope before implementation | Do not compare two monthly totals until the included jobs match. A content-edit service and a hosting account answer different needs. ## Keep account access in the handoff Ask for an inventory covering the domain, hosting, website editor, form destination, and measurement tools. Record the business owner for each account. Request an access method suited to that service without sharing passwords in a proposal. State what the provider returns when the relationship ends. Include export formats, site files where applicable, and the process for transferring management. Ask which components depend on continuing subscriptions. For search work, Google recommends asking an SEO for explanations and avoiding unclear changes. Apply that expectation to the website maintenance record too. An updated holiday schedule, a new service description, and an inaccessible contact form need different handling. Agree on a reporting route and the information needed to investigate. Request the affected address, observed behavior, time, and expected result. Have the provider state response commitments explicitly instead of assuming immediate service. Keep approval for business claims with the owner. A maintainer should receive the approved price, availability statement, or credential wording before publishing it. For management, run an approved sample edit and review its record. Where recovery is included, require the agreed recovery evidence.
