Site search is a search function for content within a particular website. A visitor enters a phrase and receives results from that site's content. MDN documents search inputs as fields for entering search queries and shows a labeled site-search example. Before adding a search box, list the questions visitors have trouble answering through navigation. For a short service website, a clearer menu or service page may be the more useful first change. Treat that choice as a design judgment based on your content. ## Define the search job Decide which material belongs in results. A product catalog, preparation guides, and current service pages can require different result labels. Ask the designer to show the ordinary route to each important service as well. ## Keep essential navigation available Google explains that crawlable links help it discover pages and understand their context. Keep useful links to important public pages. Do not make a visitor's search query the only planned route to those pages. Ask the developer to distinguish the public page inventory from search result URLs. ## Review the search field and results Ask for a visible search label and an understandable submit control. Prepare sample questions drawn from actual staff experience, without private customer information. Include an exact service name, an alternative phrase, a misspelling, and a question with no matching content. Review the returned titles and summaries. Open the results to confirm their relevance. Check that discontinued content follows the update policy you approved. ## Specify the empty state and maintenance process Write a helpful message for searches with no match. Offer a route to the service list or inquiry page. Avoid making the visitor repeat a failed search without any explanation. Ask who updates the searchable collection when pages are added, changed, or withdrawn. Request a demonstration using sample public content. Record any delay between a page update and its appearance in results. Treat search logs as a separate data collection decision. Ask what the implementation retains before enabling logging.
