# Shared hosting vs VPS for a real estate website

Choose hosting by the website's requirements and the people available to maintain it. Consider a VPS when you can identify a resource or configuration need and assign the additional administration work.

The comparison below is a purchasing and handoff guide. It does not claim a measured speed advantage for your website or prescribe a visitor threshold for upgrading.

## What is shared hosting?

Shared hosting places websites on shared server resources. AWS explains that websites in this arrangement compete for resources and that activity from other websites can affect performance. [AWS hosting explanation](https://aws.amazon.com/what-is/vps/).

Ask a prospective host what its plan limits and management service mean for your actual website. Keep those answers with the quote.

## What is a VPS?

A virtual private server supplies a virtual machine with allocated resources on underlying hardware that can still be shared. AWS distinguishes this arrangement from renting an entire physical server. [AWS explanation of VPS hosting](https://aws.amazon.com/what-is/vps/).

Ask the provider to describe the resources, permitted configuration, and management service in the proposed plan. Avoid interpreting “private” as a complete security guarantee.

## Which arrangement should a brochure website consider first?

Evaluate a supported shared or managed hosting proposal against the required pages and forms. Request evidence before adding server administration to a straightforward publishing job.

List the public pages, editing needs, and connected services. Ask the builder which requirement a VPS would satisfy. Keep a vague promise of future scale out of the purchase decision.

## When is a VPS worth evaluating?

Evaluate it when the builder identifies a documented configuration need, resource constraint, or application requirement. Ask for the observed problem and the proposed change.

Require a maintenance owner and a recovery plan alongside the technical reason. A VPS proposal should describe how the website will operate after the build, including who responds when it fails.

## Does a VPS guarantee a faster website?

Require measurements from the proposed configuration before accepting a speed claim. Compare the same pages, images, connections, and test conditions.

Ask the builder to identify whether the current delay comes from hosting or another part of the page. Record the baseline and acceptance target before a migration. Keep an unmeasured speed difference unresolved.

## What does resource isolation change?

It changes how the website receives its share of server capacity. AWS describes a VPS as providing access to an allocated share while the physical server remains shared. [VPS resource arrangement](https://aws.amazon.com/what-is/vps/).

Ask how the quoted plan handles contention, limits, and upgrades. Judge the documented arrangement instead of assuming a marketing label describes dedicated physical hardware.

## Who handles server administration?

Assign the work explicitly. AWS distinguishes unmanaged hosting, where the customer handles server maintenance, from managed services with provider administration. [Managed and unmanaged VPS explanation](https://aws.amazon.com/what-is/vps/).

Ask who handles operating-system changes, access, monitoring, and recovery for the quoted service. Record the remaining work assigned to your website maintainer.

## Does managed hosting include every website repair?

Read the provider's service definition before assuming that it does. Namecheap distinguishes its management levels and lists supported server work and exclusions. [Namecheap management scope](https://www.namecheap.com/support/knowledgebase/article.aspx/9304/48/what-vps-management-options-do-you-provide/).

Ask who fixes page errors, extensions, forms, and outside connections. Put those responsibilities in the maintenance agreement even when the server itself is managed.

## What should a maintenance responsibility table contain?

Name the responsible person or provider for each task. These are proposed purchasing fields.

| Task | Confirm in writing |
| --- | --- |
| Server software | Update owner, scope, escalation route |
| Website software | Theme, extension, application, and compatibility owner |
| Access | Account holder, recovery contact, permission removal |
| Backups | Coverage, storage, retention terms, restore operator |
| Inquiries | Delivery checks, fault owner, receiving destination |
| Incidents | Contact method, response terms, repair exclusions |

Treat an unassigned task as an open scope question.

## Who is responsible for backups?

Ask the provider to identify its backup arrangement and remaining customer responsibilities. Namecheap's VPS starter guidance says external backups accompany its Complete management service; other arrangements require customer handling. [Namecheap VPS backup guidance](https://www.namecheap.com/support/knowledgebase/article.aspx/917/48/vps-hosting-getting-started/).

Verify the actual plan you are buying. Record what is backed up, where it is retained, and who performs a restore.

## What proves that a backup can restore the website?

Request a restore demonstration in a separate test environment. Inspect the required content, images, software, and inquiry route after restoration.

Record the backup used and any reconstruction work. Keep a restore check separate from the existence of a downloadable archive. Agree how often the maintenance service will repeat that check without assuming an unstated schedule.

## Does IDX require a VPS?

Keep the hosting requirement unresolved until the IDX provider confirms the proposed integration. Ask the builder to describe where search runs and what the website itself must support.

Obtain provider confirmation for the platform and configuration. Test the property search and inquiry route. Do not buy server capacity merely because a proposal contains the term IDX.

## Should email hosting move with the website?

Treat email as a separate dependency to investigate. Record where mail is hosted and which domain records support it before changing website hosting.

Ask the provider to identify any email work in the migration. Have the responsible person verify mail delivery after approved changes. Keep a website move from silently becoming an unplanned email migration.

## How should website inquiries be protected during migration?

Plan the handoff around received inquiries. Ask the builder to identify submission storage, destination settings, and the point where the receiving route changes.

Agree how marked tests will run before and after the move. Inspect the matching received records. Keep a record of any inquiry data requiring separate transfer and who owns that work.

## What should the full hosting quote include?

Request the hosting charge, billing period, renewal terms, server management, software licenses, backups, and website maintenance. Ask which support tasks incur additional fees.

Keep vendor charges separate from builder work. This comparison does not quote a plan price because no configuration has been selected. Obtain a dated quote for the arrangement you intend to operate.

## What should you ask about a low introductory price?

Ask for the renewal amount, commitment period, cancellation terms, and included work. Keep the dated offer and its conditions with the proposal.

Compare the same operating period across providers. Include required management and maintenance in that comparison. Leave missing renewal figures unresolved rather than replacing them with an assumed market rate.

## How should security responsibility be reviewed?

Ask for the division of work covering account access, software changes, monitoring, and incident response. Request an explanation that refers to the actual service you are purchasing.

Have the responsible maintainer document the website's recovery path. Avoid accepting “secure VPS” as the full maintenance scope. Confirm who investigates an alert and who approves changes affecting the live website.

## What belongs in a hosting migration rehearsal?

Rebuild the required website in a controlled environment and check its public functions. Inspect page addresses, images, navigation, forms, and any property search connection.

Keep outward messages restricted to marked tests and agreed recipients. Record faults and the planned rollback point. Do not change the live domain merely to find out whether the proposed configuration works.

## How should rollback be planned?

Ask the builder to identify the prior working configuration, retained data, and conditions for returning to it. Specify who can authorize and execute that return.

Address new content and inquiries created after the move. A rollback plan should explain what happens to those records. Keep the prior service available for the agreed transition period.

## What should a hosting handoff contain?

Retain the account map, service agreement, maintenance contacts, backup instructions, restore evidence, and current website source materials. Identify the domain and email dependencies separately.

Have a replacement maintainer review access and required subscriptions. Record anything they cannot recover or operate. Resolve those gaps before describing the handoff as complete.

## What would justify upgrading later?

Use an observed constraint and a proposed remedy. Review measured performance, documented resource use, and application requirements with the maintainer.

Ask whether tuning, image changes, or a different managed plan could satisfy the requirement. Reassess the operating responsibilities before buying a VPS. Keep an upgrade decision tied to evidence that another provider can inspect.

## What should you bring to a website hosting brief?

Bring the current plan, website requirements, recurring faults, available measurements, integration requirements, and maintenance responsibility table. Identify the person who will own recovery.

Use the [real estate website brief](/work) to request a hosting assessment with the website scope. Ask for a demonstrated operating arrangement and a documented handoff.
