# Use server-side rendering to get JavaScript pages indexed and ranked.

Your React application is fast and modern. Google Search Console shows 10,000 impressions, but only 50 indexed pages, and you published 500. The content exists, but Google does not see most of it.

JavaScript frameworks such as React, Vue, and Angular can render content in the browser instead of on the server. The crawler then receives nearly empty HTML, and the content appears only after JavaScript runs. Users see the page; search engines may not.

This guide explains when client-side rendering (CSR) breaks SEO. It shows how server-side rendering (SSR) and static site generation (SSG) fix it, and which strategy fits your pages.

## Understand how Google processes JavaScript pages

Google handles JavaScript pages in stages:

1. **Crawl.** Googlebot fetches the raw HTML and reads what is already in it, including links.
2. **Render.** Pages that need JavaScript wait in a render queue. A headless Chromium then runs the JavaScript.
3. **Index.** Google indexes the rendered content.

Google has said that most pages render quickly, but the queue can delay some pages, and rendering can fail. That gap causes four problems:

- **Delayed indexing.** New content can take longer to index than server-rendered content.
- **Incomplete indexing.** If JavaScript fails through errors, timeouts, or blocked resources, Google never sees the rendered content.
- **Wasted crawl resources.** Google fetches and runs script files as well as the pages themselves.
- **Missed SEO elements.** If JavaScript generates the title tag, meta description, or structured data, the raw HTML lacks them until rendering succeeds.

The [Googlebot JavaScript rendering guide](/articles/googlebot-javascript-rendering) covers the render pipeline in more depth.

## Know when client-side rendering is the problem

CSR is the default in a React, Vue, or Angular app built without SSR configuration, such as an app created with Create React App. The React team deprecated Create React App in February 2025 and points new projects to frameworks with server rendering.

In CSR, the server sends minimal HTML. The browser downloads the JavaScript bundle, runs it, and renders the content. The crawler first receives something like this:

```html
<!DOCTYPE html>
<html>
<head>
  <title>Loading...</title>
</head>
<body>
  <div id="root"></div>
  <!-- the JavaScript bundle loads here and fills #root -->
</body>
</html>
```

That HTML causes four SEO problems:

- **No content in the source.** The empty `#root` element is all that the first fetch sees.
- **No real title or meta tags.** If the framework sets them in JavaScript, Google sees them only after rendering.
- **Hidden internal links.** If JavaScript builds the navigation, Google can miss other pages.
- **No structured data.** JSON-LD added by JavaScript is also absent from the raw HTML.

CSR is acceptable for internal tools and dashboards that should not rank, and for pages behind a login. It is also acceptable when organic traffic is not a growth channel.

## Fix it with server-side rendering

With SSR, the server renders each page on request and sends complete HTML:

1. The user requests a page.
2. The server runs the framework and renders the page to HTML.
3. The server sends the complete HTML.
4. The browser shows the content at once.
5. JavaScript then "hydrates" the page and attaches event handlers for interactivity.

The crawler receives the content, the title, and the meta tags in the first response:

```html
<!DOCTYPE html>
<html>
<head>
  <title>SEO guide: server-side rendering for React</title>
  <meta name="description" content="Learn how SSR fixes SEO issues in React apps.">
</head>
<body>
  <div id="root">
    <h1>SEO guide: server-side rendering for React</h1>
    <p>Server-side rendering solves the core problem...</p>
  </div>
</body>
</html>
```

The content, meta tags, Open Graph tags, and internal links are all in the source HTML. Google finds pages efficiently and does not depend on the render queue.

As of March 2026, these frameworks provide SSR:

- **Next.js** for React, the most common choice.
- **Nuxt** for Vue.
- **Angular SSR** (`@angular/ssr`), which replaced Angular Universal in Angular 17 in 2023.
- **SvelteKit** for Svelte.
- **React Router 7**, which absorbed Remix in November 2024, with an SSR-first design.

Use SSR for content-heavy sites such as blogs, documentation, and marketing sites. Use it for ecommerce product pages that must be indexed fast, and for SaaS landing, feature, and pricing pages. Use it for news and media that need immediate indexing.

SSR has four costs:

- **Server load.** Each request renders on the server, which uses CPU.
- **Hosting.** Pure static hosting does not work; you need a Node.js server or a serverless runtime.
- **Complexity.** More parts can fail, and debugging is harder than in CSR.
- **Time to first byte (TTFB).** The first response is slower, because the server renders before it sends.

## Use static site generation where content allows

SSG renders pages at build time and serves the static HTML from a CDN:

1. At build time, the framework renders each route to HTML.
2. You deploy the static files to a CDN such as Vercel, Netlify, or Cloudflare Pages.
3. The CDN serves the pre-rendered HTML on each request.
4. JavaScript hydrates the page for interactivity.

SSG keeps all the SEO benefits of SSR and adds speed, because no server renders per request. It costs less, because a CDN serves the files. TTFB from a CDN edge is near-instant, which helps Core Web Vitals.

SSG has limits. The pages must be known at build time. A content change needs a rebuild and a redeploy. Personalized or real-time data needs client-side JavaScript after load.

Frameworks with SSG include Next.js, Gatsby, Nuxt (through `nuxt generate`), SvelteKit (through adapters), and Astro, which mixes React, Vue, and Svelte components. Use SSG for blogs, documentation that rebuilds on each Git push, marketing sites, and portfolio or agency sites.

**Incremental Static Regeneration (ISR)** in Next.js combines the two. Pages are static but regenerate in the background when they go stale. For example, an ecommerce product page is generated at build time and revalidates every 60 seconds. If the product changes, the next request after the cache expires triggers a new version. Users get a fast static page with fresh content.

On very large sites, full SSG builds take a long time. Generate the popular pages at build time and the rest on demand with ISR. Or use SSR for rarely visited pages.

## Treat dynamic rendering as a stopgap

Dynamic rendering detects bots and serves them pre-rendered HTML, while users get the normal CSR app:

1. The server checks the user agent: Googlebot and Bingbot, or a browser.
2. Bots get pre-rendered HTML from a headless browser.
3. Users get the CSR app.

Tools include Prerender.io, a hosted service that charges by cached page, and Puppeteer, for a custom pre-renderer on headless Chrome. Google's own Rendertron project is deprecated.

Dynamic rendering needs no application code changes, it ships faster than a move to SSR or SSG, and users keep the CSR experience. It also has four drawbacks:

- **Google calls it a workaround.** Its guidance recommends SSR, static rendering, or hydration instead.
- **Two versions to maintain.** The bot HTML and the user content can drift apart. The result can look like cloaking, which Google's spam policies forbid.
- **Cost** grows with the number of cached pages.
- **Fragility.** User-agent detection can break or be misconfigured.

Use it only in three cases: a short-term fix during a move to SSR, a legacy app that you cannot refactor, or a small site. Do not detect Googlebot to serve different content by any other method; that is cloaking.

## Diagnose rendering issues in four tests

**View source against the inspector.** Open the page source (Ctrl+U) to see the raw HTML from the server. Open the inspector to see the DOM after JavaScript runs. If the content appears in both, SSR or SSG works. If it appears only in the inspector, you have a CSR problem.

**URL Inspection in Search Console.** Enter the URL, select "View crawled page", and compare the HTML with the screenshot. If the screenshot shows content that the HTML lacks, Google depends on rendering for that content.

**Rich Results Test or the live URL test.** Google retired the Mobile-Friendly Test in December 2023. Use the Rich Results Test or the live test in URL Inspection instead. Open the rendered HTML and confirm that the title, meta tags, and content appear.

**Chrome with JavaScript turned off.** Open DevTools (F12), press Ctrl+Shift+P (Command+Shift+P on a Mac), type "Disable JavaScript", select it, and reload. If the page shows its content, SSR or SSG works. If it is blank or broken, the page depends on CSR.

## Implement SSR and SSG in Next.js

Create a project:

```bash
npx create-next-app@latest my-app
cd my-app
npm run dev
```

The examples below use the App Router, the default in current Next.js. The older Pages Router uses `getServerSideProps` for SSR and `getStaticProps` with `getStaticPaths` for SSG, with the same results.

**SSR page.** Next.js renders this page on the server for each request:

```javascript
// app/blog/[slug]/page.js
export const dynamic = 'force-dynamic'; // render on each request (SSR)
async function getPost(slug) {
  const res = await fetch(`https://api.example.com/posts/${slug}`, { cache: 'no-store' });
  return res.json();
}
export async function generateMetadata({ params }) {
  const { slug } = await params;
  const post = await getPost(slug);
  return { title: `${post.title} | My Blog`, description: post.excerpt };
}
export default async function BlogPost({ params }) {
  const { slug } = await params;
  const post = await getPost(slug);
  return (
    <article>
      <h1>{post.title}</h1>
      <div dangerouslySetInnerHTML={{ __html: post.content }} />
    </article>
  );
}
```

When a user requests `/blog/server-side-rendering`, Next.js fetches the post on the server, renders the HTML with the title and description, and sends it. Google sees the full content in the first response.

**SSG page with ISR.** Next.js renders these pages at build time and refreshes them in the background:

```javascript
// app/blog/[slug]/page.js
export const revalidate = 60; // ISR: regenerate at most once each 60 seconds
export async function generateStaticParams() {
  const posts = await fetch('https://api.example.com/posts').then((r) => r.json());
  return posts.map((post) => ({ slug: post.slug }));
}
async function getPost(slug) {
  const res = await fetch(`https://api.example.com/posts/${slug}`);
  return res.json();
}
export async function generateMetadata({ params }) {
  const { slug } = await params;
  const post = await getPost(slug);
  return { title: `${post.title} | My Blog`, description: post.excerpt };
}
export default async function BlogPost({ params }) {
  const { slug } = await params;
  const post = await getPost(slug);
  return (
    <article>
      <h1>{post.title}</h1>
      <div dangerouslySetInnerHTML={{ __html: post.content }} />
    </article>
  );
}
```

At build time, Next.js calls `generateStaticParams` to list each slug, renders each page, and deploys the HTML to the CDN. Requests get pre-rendered HTML with no server rendering.

You do not lose single-page application (SPA) behavior. After the first server-rendered load, navigation between pages happens on the client, with no full reloads. You can also mix strategies per route: SSR or SSG for public marketing pages, blog, and pricing, and CSR for the logged-in dashboard. For personalized content, render the page structure on the server. Load personal sections, such as recommendations, on the client after load. The [JavaScript SEO frameworks comparison](/articles/javascript-seo-frameworks) covers the other frameworks.

## Measure the result

Track five measures after the move. The expected ranges are planning estimates.

| Measure | Where | Before | After |
|---|---|---|---|
| Indexed pages | Search Console page indexing report | 50 of 500 | 480+ within 2 to 4 weeks |
| Time to index new content | URL Inspection | 7 to 14 days | 24 to 72 hours |
| Impressions | Search Console performance report | Baseline | Often several times higher within 60 days as more pages rank |
| Core Web Vitals | Search Console and PageSpeed Insights | Baseline | LCP improves with SSR or SSG. TTFB can worsen with SSR and improves with SSG. |
| Organic traffic | GA4 | Baseline | Often 30 to 100% higher within 90 days |

The [Core Web Vitals developer guide](/articles/core-web-vitals-developer-guide) covers how to keep TTFB and LCP in range after an SSR move.

## Manage migration risks

**Duplicate content during the transition.** CSR and SSR versions can run at the same time, for example on an old domain and a new one. Point canonical tags at the SSR version.

**URL changes.** Keep the same URLs through the move. If a URL must change, add a 301 redirect from the old URL to the new one.

**Broken routes.** CSR apps often use hash routing (`/#/page`) or client-side routes with no server support. Confirm that the server handles each route.

**Server load.** SSR needs server capacity. Load-test before launch, and use edge caching, such as Vercel's edge network or Cloudflare Workers, to cut server hits.

Google's rendering has improved, but it still adds a step that can delay or fail. SSR and SSG stay the safer choice for pages that must rank. Pre-rendering only the title and meta tags helps a little, but body content, internal links, and structured data still wait for rendering. Mobile-first indexing changes nothing here: the same CSR problems apply to the mobile version that Google indexes. The [JavaScript SEO guide](/articles/javascript-seo-guide) lists the other JavaScript issues to audit once rendering works.
