# Run a minimum viable SEO plan as a solo founder in 90 days.

You build the product, close customers, and run operations. You are also expected to bring in organic traffic. Most SEO advice assumes a team, a budget, or at least a full uninterrupted day. You have none of these.

This plan cuts SEO to the smallest set of tasks that moves traffic when you work alone. It has no editorial calendar, no link campaign, and no technical audit that needs a developer.

## Set up the foundation in four hours

Build the base before you write the first article.

**Technical baseline.** Install an SEO plugin, such as Yoast for WordPress, or use the Next.js Metadata API for a Next.js site. Generate an XML sitemap, verify your domain in Google Search Console, and submit the sitemap there. Connect Google Analytics 4 (GA4). This takes about 90 minutes the first time and 20 minutes after that.

**Keyword research without paid tools.** Open a private browser window and type your product category into Google. The autocomplete suggestions are queries that people search. Scroll to "People also ask" and "Related searches". Save all of it. That is free search demand data from Google.

**Competitor pages.** Find three competitors that rank for terms you want. The free Ahrefs traffic checker shows their top pages. The free Ahrefs backlink checker shows who links to them. Top pages show where searchers convert. Build your content plan around pages that beat those specific pages.

**Site structure.** Create three sections: `/blog/` for educational content, `/guides/` for comprehensive resources that earn links, and `/[your-product]/` for pages that convert. On a small site, a flat structure works better than a deep one. Put each important page one click from the home page.

## Publish ten articles in a set order

Solo founders often publish at random. Posts about company culture or industry trends get no traffic, because nobody searches for your opinion until you are known. Publish these ten first, one every three or four days.

**Articles 1 to 3: comparison content.** Target "X vs. Y", "best X for [use case]", and "X alternatives". These reach buyers in active evaluation, and they convert at several times the rate of educational content. Even 50 visits each month to a comparison page can bring customers.

**Articles 4 to 6: tool pages.** Build a calculator, generator, or template. One mortgage calculator page can rank for dozens of variations of "mortgage calculator". A resume template page can rank for "resume template [industry]" across many industries. Tools earn links on their own; most educational posts do not.

**Articles 7 and 8: problem and solution content.** Target searches that start with "how", "why", or "what causes", such as "how to fix X". These rank faster than competitive commercial terms, and they present your product as the systematic fix.

**Articles 9 and 10: aggregation content.** Write a complete guide or a complete list on one topic. Other sites cite comprehensive resources, so a single aggregation post can earn dozens of links over two years. Those links lift the whole domain.

Match each article to intent, not only to the keyword. "SEO tools" is informational: the searcher wants a list. "Best SEO tool for agencies" is commercial: the searcher is buying. Position 3 on a commercial query often earns more revenue than position 1 on an informational query.

## Check six on-page elements in 15 minutes

Check each article for these six elements before you publish.

1. **Title tag.** Keep it to 50 to 60 characters, with the primary keyword near the start. Add a qualifier that promises specifics, such as "with examples" or "step by step". Test phrasings such as "without X", "that work", or "in under Y minutes".
2. **Meta description.** Keep it to 150 to 160 characters. It is not a ranking factor, but it affects click-through rate (CTR). Write it like ad copy, with the primary keyword, a clear benefit, and a call to action. Google often bolds the terms that match the query.
3. **Heading structure.** Use one H1 that matches the title tag. Write H2s as questions or benefit statements. Plain headings such as "What is X" and "How does X work" often feed featured snippets better than clever ones.
4. **Internal links.** Link to three to five of your other articles in the first 500 words. Use descriptive anchor text with the target keyword. Link each new article to an older one, and update the older one to link back.
5. **Entities.** Name products, tools, and concepts clearly and consistently, such as Google Search Console and XML sitemap. Bold text does not tell Google what an entity is. Clear names and context do.
6. **Images.** Write alt text that describes the image literally in 10 to 15 words, with the keyword where it fits. Alt text feeds Google Images. Name files before upload: `seo-for-solo-founders-workflow.png`, not `IMG_0847.png`.

## Earn links with the least time

Links remain one of the strongest ranking signals. Classic link building through outreach, guest posts, and relationships takes time that you do not have. These five methods cost less.

**Take competitors' links.** Run a competitor's top page through the free Ahrefs backlink checker and sort by domain rating (DR). Email the 10 lowest-DR sites, because they answer most often. Write: "You linked to [competitor article]. I published an updated version that covers [what theirs lacks]. Would you consider linking to it?"

One or two replies for each 10 emails is normal, which is about one or two links for each hour of work.

**Publish data.** Run a short survey in Google Forms or analyze public government or academic datasets. You can also compile existing statistics into one resource. Publish it as a statistics page or a state-of-the-industry report. Journalists need data, and a good dataset can earn 20 to 30 links without outreach.

**Answer journalist requests.** Journalist request services send daily lists of reporters who need sources. HARO, the best-known one, ran as Connectively in 2024 and shut down in December 2024. Featured.com relaunched it in April 2025. Check which services run today before you sign up. Answer two or three requests each week in your field. Give specific data, quotes, or frameworks, because generic answers get ignored. If 1 in 15 answers becomes a news-site link, 30 minutes each week yields a few strong links each month.

**Help in communities.** Answer questions on Reddit, Quora, and niche forums. Write a complete answer. Link your article only when it solves the question, with a line such as "I wrote a detailed breakdown here". Reddit threads gained visibility in Google results through 2023 and 2024, so a good forum answer can also bring visits from search.

**Fix broken links.** Search Google for `intitle:"resources" [your keyword]` to find resource pages in your field. Check them with a broken link checker. Email the owner: "Your resource page has a broken link to [dead URL]. I have a guide on [topic] that can replace it."

Expect a 10 to 15% reply rate, or about one link for each two hours of work.

Skip general link prospecting. Put outreach time only into competitor links, where relevance is proven, and journalist requests, where the journalist asks for you.

## Cover three technical basics

You do not need to debug JavaScript rendering. Three technical checks still matter, because each can hold rankings down.

**Mobile usability.** Most Google searches happen on phones, and Google indexes the mobile version of your site. Google retired its Mobile-Friendly Test and the Search Console mobile usability report in December 2023. Test with Lighthouse in Chrome DevTools instead. Fix small tap targets, horizontal scroll, and small text. Use a responsive theme or framework.

**Page speed.** Run PageSpeed Insights and check the three Core Web Vitals. Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) must stay under 2.5 seconds. Interaction to Next Paint (INP) must stay under 200 milliseconds. Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS) must stay under 0.1. INP replaced First Input Delay as a Core Web Vital in March 2024. Compress images to WebP, turn on caching, minify CSS and JavaScript, and use a CDN. A slow page loses conversions before it loses rankings.

**Indexing.** Google does not rank pages that it has not indexed. Compare your published article count with the indexed count in the Search Console page indexing report. For a missing page, inspect the URL in Search Console and select "Request indexing". Keep the sitemap current. Resubmitting the same sitemap each week does not speed indexing.

## Track three numbers each week

Ignore most dashboards. Check these three numbers each week.

**Impressions.** In Search Console, open the performance report and read the impressions trend. Impressions measure how often you appear in results. Their growth usually comes 2 to 4 weeks before traffic growth. Flat impressions mean you need more content or wider topic coverage.

**CTR by query.** In the same report, open the queries tab and sort by impressions. A query with 500+ impressions and a CTR under 3% has a title or meta description problem. Rewrite those two elements for that page. A 2-point CTR gain on a query with 1,000 impressions adds 20 visits each month.

**Conversion rate by landing page.** In GA4, open the landing page report and sort by sessions. Calculate conversions for each page. GA4 renamed conversions to key events in March 2024, so the report can use either term. As a planning range, comparison content converts at 5 to 15%, and educational content at 0.5 to 2%. If a comparison page converts below 5%, fix the call to action or the offer on that page.

Three signs show that the plan works. Impressions rise week over week. At least three articles reach the top 20 within 60 days. Organic traffic grows 10 to 15% each month after month 3. If none of these appear by month 4, change the keyword targets or improve the content.

## Automate, delegate, or drop work as you grow

The useful question is not when to hire an agency. It is what to stop doing yourself.

Automate keyword research with AnswerThePublic or a "People also ask" export extension. That produces 100 ideas in about 10 minutes, not 3 hours. Automate monitoring with Search Console email alerts for indexing errors and manual actions. You then fix problems as they appear, and you do not need scheduled audits.

After your first ten articles prove that organic traffic converts, hire writers to produce more of the formats that work. Brief them with competitor URLs, an outline, and keyword targets. You keep the strategy and the optimization; they add volume.

Do not hire an agency until organic traffic already produces revenue. An agency multiplies what works. It rarely creates it from zero, and before that point it spends budget on generic tactics that do not fit your model. The [guide to when founders should stop doing SEO themselves](/articles/founders-stop-doing-seo-themselves) covers the handover point.

Use AI for research and outlines, not for final drafts. Google does not penalize content only because AI wrote it. Its scaled content abuse policy, published in March 2024, targets pages mass-produced to rank. AI drafts also tend to lack specific examples, firsthand experience, and original insight, which are the signals behind E-E-A-T (experience, expertise, authoritativeness, trustworthiness). Rewrite each draft with what only you know.

## Avoid five common mistakes

**Keywords you cannot win.** "Project management software" has about 50,000 monthly searches and competitors with DR 80+. You will not rank. "Project management software for construction startups" has about 500 searches and DR 30 competitors, and you can rank in about 90 days. Narrow the topic until the query is winnable. Without links, aim for queries with 500 to 1,500 monthly searches and an Ahrefs keyword difficulty under 30.

**Irregular publishing.** One article each week keeps momentum, and two each week grows faster. Eight articles over eight weeks beat eight articles in week 1 followed by silence. Write four to six articles in one focused weekend, then schedule them one each week. Daily publishing rarely helps unless the domain already has strong authority, around DR 50 or more.

**No updates.** For competitive keywords, an updated article often beats a new one. Every six months, refresh your ten highest-traffic posts with new statistics, new sections, and current screenshots. Change the published date only when the content changes in substance.

**An overbuilt structure.** Categories inside categories and heavy tag systems create orphan pages with no internal links. Keep three levels at most: home page, product pages, and blog.

**Premature work.** Some founders add schema markup before ten articles exist, or chase links before the keyword targets are proven. Others hire an agency before organic traffic converts. Each spends effort in the wrong order. The [founder SEO quick wins guide](/articles/founder-seo-quick-wins) lists the tasks that pay back first.

## Follow the 90-day schedule

| Weeks | Focus | Tasks |
|---|---|---|
| 1 to 2 | Foundation | Technical setup, keyword research, competitor analysis. Publish articles 1 to 3. |
| 3 to 4 | Tool pages | Publish articles 4 to 6. Add internal links across all content. Confirm the sitemap in Search Console. |
| 5 to 6 | Authority | Publish articles 7 and 8. Start journalist request answers. Earn 5 competitor links. |
| 7 to 8 | Aggregation | Publish articles 9 and 10. Add links from older articles to the new ones. |
| 9 to 10 | Data | Run a survey or compile statistics. Publish the report and pitch it to 10 industry newsletters. |
| 11 to 12 | Optimization | Find low-CTR queries in Search Console. Rewrite titles and meta descriptions. Measure conversion by landing page. |
| 13 onward | Momentum | Publish one or two articles each week: one new, one updated. Keep answering journalist requests. |

Expect meaningful traffic of 100+ monthly visits in 3 to 6 months on a new domain. An established domain can see it in 4 to 8 weeks, and a low-competition niche in 30 to 45 days. A high-competition industry can take 6 to 12 months. Domain age, the rate of new links, and keyword difficulty set the pace.

If you need customers this month, paid ads bring traffic at once but need a continuous budget. SEO takes 3 to 6 months and builds assets that compound. If you plan for 12 months or more, start SEO now and use ads to fund the short term. The [SEO or paid decision guide for founders](/articles/seo-for-founders-seo-vs-paid) compares the two in detail.

A zero tool budget still works. Google Search Console, GA4, Google Keyword Planner, and the free Ahrefs tools cover keyword research, performance tracking, and basic link analysis. Keyword Planner needs a Google Ads account, which can stay inactive. Paid tools save time, but you do not need them for first traction. The [bootstrapped SEO strategy](/articles/bootstrapped-seo-strategy) extends this plan for a founder with a small team.
