# Split SEO and social media work so each channel amplifies the other.

Pages that rank well often have many shares, likes, and comments. That correlation leads teams to treat social engagement as a ranking lever. It is not. Google has stated more than once that social signals are not direct ranking factors.

The real mechanism is indirect. Social distribution puts content in front of more people. Some of those people are bloggers, journalists, and publishers, and some of them link to it. Links do affect rankings.

That mechanism sets the ownership. The SEO team creates content for search intent. The social media manager distributes it for reach and engagement. When the teams work in silos, SEO posts go unread. Social posts then never lead back to the site.

## Separate what social does and does not do for search

Google ranks pages on signals such as relevance, content quality, links, and page experience. Facebook likes, reposts on X, Instagram followers, and LinkedIn shares are not among its direct ranking factors.

Social still has four indirect effects on search:

1. **Reach.** Shares put content in front of more people, which raises the chance that someone with a site links to it.
2. **Brand demand.** A visible social presence leads more people to search for your brand. Brand search can lift clicks and links. Google has not confirmed brand search volume as a direct signal.
3. **Link discovery.** Journalists and bloggers find content in their feeds and cite it.
4. **Faster discovery.** Some teams see new pages indexed sooner after a spike in social traffic. Google has not confirmed this effect; treat it as an observed pattern only.

Bought followers, engagement pods that trade likes, and mass posts of weak content do none of this. They earn no links and no real awareness.

## Give the SEO team the search work

The SEO team owns five areas:

- Keyword research and content strategy: target keywords, search volume, and intent.
- Long-form content: posts of 1,500 to 2,500 words, pillar pages of 3,000+ words, guides, case studies, and comparison pages.
- On-page work: meta titles, descriptions, headings, internal links, and schema markup.
- Link acquisition: digital PR, guest posts, and partnerships.
- Measurement: organic sessions in GA4, rankings in Search Console, links in Ahrefs, and organic conversions.

The SEO team hands four things to the social team:

- **The content calendar.** Social needs one week of lead time to plan distribution.
- **Key takeaways.** Three to five points for each article, which social turns into threads, carousels, and quote graphics.
- **Visual assets.** Hero images, charts, and infographics.
- **The target reader.** This choice sets platform and tone: LinkedIn for B2B, X for tech, Instagram for consumer brands.

The SEO team does not post, run communities, or do influencer outreach, unless that outreach is for links.

## Give the social media manager distribution

The social media manager owns five areas:

- Repurposing: turn long-form content into native formats, such as X threads, LinkedIn carousels, Instagram infographics, and short videos.
- Distribution on X, LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Reddit, and online communities, wherever the audience is.
- Engagement: replies to comments, messages, and mentions, and relationships with influencers, journalists, and community members.
- Paid amplification: boosts for strong organic posts, aimed at lookalike audiences or site visitors.
- Measurement: reach, impressions, engagement rate, click-through rate to the site, and social referral traffic in GA4.

The social team hands four things back:

- **Referral data.** Social visits to each article, from the GA4 traffic acquisition report filtered to social.
- **Top content.** The posts with the most shares, from BuzzSumo or platform analytics. The SEO team writes more on those topics.
- **Contacts.** Journalists, bloggers, and influencers who engaged, for the SEO team's link outreach.
- **Audience questions.** Questions and objections from comments, which become new articles.

The social team does not write long-form content, research keywords, or do technical SEO. The [social media manager's SEO responsibilities](/articles/social-media-manager-seo-responsibilities) cover this boundary in more detail.

## Run the handoff in five steps

1. **The SEO team publishes and notifies.** For example, it publishes "How to manage remote teams: 15 practices" (2,500 words, for "remote team management"). It posts the takeaways to the social team in Slack, Asana, Monday, or Notion.
2. **The social team repurposes (2 to 3 hours).** It writes a 10-post X thread with the link in the last post. It builds a 10-slide LinkedIn carousel with the link on the last slide. It adds an Instagram infographic of the top 5 practices and a 60-second video of the 3 biggest mistakes. It writes a Reddit post in r/remotework or r/management with real context.
3. **The social team distributes (1 to 2 hours).** It posts each format on the same day, 2 to 4 hours apart. It shares in relevant communities with context, not bare links, and tags people who have written on the topic.
4. **The social team monitors and reports (30 minutes each day for 7 days).** It answers comments and messages. It tracks impressions, engagement, click-through rate, and referral traffic. It reports back, for example: "The X thread had 50,000 impressions and 200 clicks. The carousel had 30,000 impressions and 150 clicks."
5. **The SEO team measures the search effect (ongoing).** It checks Ahrefs for new links to the article and Search Console for ranking changes. If content with strong social distribution earns more links, it adds similar topics to the calendar.

## Fit each platform to its audience

Platform features and limits change often. The notes below date from March 2026. Check each platform's current rules before you plan a format.

| Platform | Best for | Formats | Cadence | Amplification |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| LinkedIn | B2B SaaS, professional services: thought leadership, case studies, how-to guides, reports | Carousels, text posts (the feed shows only the first few lines before "see more"), native video | 3 to 5 posts each week per account, on the company page and on founder or executive accounts | Employees share company posts, which often reach far more people than the page alone. Tag relevant people and companies. |
| X | Tech, startups, real-time topics: breakdowns of complex topics, commentary | Threads of 10 to 20 posts, quote posts, replies | 5 to 10 posts each day for a personal brand, 1 to 2 for a company account | Repost influencers, tag relevant journalists, use few hashtags |
| Reddit | Niche and technical audiences: deep technical content, data studies, community questions | Text posts with context, AMA sessions, comments | 1 to 2 posts each week at most. Keep about 10 comments for each self-promotional post. | None. Let the community vote. Reddit users react badly to ads. |
| Instagram | Consumer and visual brands: product demos, behind-the-scenes content | Carousels, Reels, Stories | 3 to 5 posts each week, Stories each day | A small set of relevant hashtags, location tags for local businesses, tags for partners |
| TikTok | Younger audiences: short tips, "day in the life" content, education | Short vertical video with text overlays and trending audio | Daily, because the feed rewards consistency | Trending sounds, niche hashtags, duets and stitches |

For most B2B SaaS teams, LinkedIn brings the most reach. X brings engaged tech and startup readers who share and link. Reddit brings high-quality referral traffic. Use all three, and put the most volume on LinkedIn.

## Measure what social adds to search

The targets below are planning figures, not benchmarks.

**Social referral traffic.** In GA4, open the traffic acquisition report and filter to social, or to one platform. For content-driven businesses, target 5 to 10% of total traffic from social. At 10,000 organic sessions each month, that is 500 to 1,000 social visits. Below 2%, social does not amplify the content. Above 20%, you can be over-invested in social or under-invested in SEO. Organic search compounds and has no cost for each click, so it should lead over time.

**Links after distribution.** In Ahrefs Site Explorer, open the backlinks report for the article and filter to new links in the last 30 days. Check whether links appeared 1 to 7 days after distribution. That timing suggests, but does not prove, that social helped discovery. Target 1 to 3 links for each major piece of 2,000+ words. No links after 90 days means the content or the promotion needs work. The [digital PR link building guide](/articles/seo-digital-pr-link-building) covers outreach that turns reach into links.

**Brand search.** In Google Search Console, filter the query report to brand terms: company, product, and founder names. Target 5 to 10% growth in brand impressions each month. The [brand search lift guide](/articles/brand-search-lift-seo) shows how to separate this growth from seasonality.

**Social-sourced conversions.** In GA4, open the user acquisition report and filter first user source to social. Count trials, purchases, or leads from users who found you on social, even if they converted later through organic or direct visits. Google renamed GA4 conversions to key events in March 2024, so reports can use either label. Target 5 to 15% of conversions for content-driven businesses. Below 3%, social does not bring qualified visitors.

**Engagement against ranking speed.** Compare the time to reach the top 10 for articles with high and low social engagement. For example, an article with 500 shares reached the top 10 in 4 months, and an article with 50 shares took 9 months. This comparison is not proof of cause, but it helps you choose which topics to promote hardest.

## Fix the five signs of a broken handoff

| Symptom | Fix |
|---|---|
| Posts get 100 organic sessions each month and no social referrals. | Make the handoff mandatory. The SEO team announces each publish, and social distributes within 48 hours. |
| Social has 50,000 followers, the blog has 1,000 visitors each month, and the audiences do not overlap. | Align the calendars. At least half of social posts drive traffic to site content. |
| Social brings 5,000 visits each month that convert at 0.2%, against a 3% site average. | Audit what the social post promises against what the page delivers. The audience or the message does not match. |
| SEO reports organic growth, social reports engagement, and nobody connects them. | Build one dashboard with social referrals, links after distribution, and brand search growth. Review it in a joint monthly meeting. |
| SEO publishes 10 posts each month, and social promotes 2. | Keep one shared calendar in Notion, Google Sheets, or Asana. SEO logs upcoming posts, and social marks which it promotes and when. |

In a company with fewer than five people, one person can hold both roles. Past that size, the skills differ. SEO needs keyword research, content strategy, technical work, and link acquisition. Social needs native content, community work, influencer relationships, and paid ads. Both roles report to the CMO or VP of growth.

## Build formats that serve both channels

**Data studies.** Original research earns links from journalists who cite the data. Charts perform well on LinkedIn, X, and Instagram. For example, the SEO team publishes a 3,000-word report on a survey of 1,000 remote managers, and social turns it into a 10-slide carousel.

**Long guides split into short posts.** A 3,000-word pillar page ranks for competitive keywords. Each of its sections becomes a thread, a LinkedIn post, or a short video. A 10-section project management guide becomes 10 threads, each with a link to the full guide.

**Video with transcripts.** A founder records a 10-minute video on the top five remote management mistakes. The SEO team publishes the transcript as an article with the questions users ask. Social cuts 60-second clips for TikTok and Reels.

**Case studies.** A case study ranks for "[use case] + [category]" keywords, such as "project management for agencies". Social turns its results, before-and-after screenshots, and metrics into a carousel. The [guide to repurposing social media content for SEO](/articles/social-media-content-seo-repurposing) gives more format pairs.

**Founder bylines.** A founder byline on site content supports E-E-A-T (experience, expertise, authoritativeness, trustworthiness). The founder's personal account often reaches more people than the company account. The founder publishes an opinion piece on the company blog and shares it on LinkedIn with commentary. The share drives traffic, and the traffic can bring links.

Do not buy followers or engagement. Fake followers do not link or buy. Platforms also reduce the reach of accounts with many fake followers. Spend on content, real community work, and paid boosts for posts that already perform.
