# Assign local SEO tasks to the owner, manager, and marketer who can do them.

A restaurant or local business has three people who can do SEO work, and each has a different constraint:

- The owner has budget and authority but no time. The owner approves the plan and returns to operations.
- The manager has daily time on site but limited digital skill. The manager can post photos and answer reviews, but cannot audit site speed or fix schema markup.
- The marketer, if the business has one, has strategy skills but little engineering support.

Match the work to each constraint. The owner needs about 1 hour a quarter, the manager about 30 minutes a day, and the marketer 3 to 5 hours a week. Work that needs more time or technical depth goes to a local SEO specialist or agency.

## Owner: set the budget and goals, 1 hour a quarter

The owner funds SEO and does not execute it. Four tasks fill the quarterly hour.

### Set a revenue goal and budget from it

Set a goal tied to local search, such as "50 new customers a month from Google Maps and organic search by Q4". Then derive the budget: target customer acquisition cost (CAC) × target new customers. One conservative starting point is a target CAC of about one tenth of customer lifetime value (LTV). The budget covers tools, labor (the manager's time and the marketer's fees), and outsourced work such as audits and writing.

### Review the Google Business Profile

Open the Google Business Profile performance report each month. Check views, actions (calls, direction requests, website clicks), review count, and average rating. If views fall, investigate competitors, inconsistent business listings, and stale content. If views grow and actions stay flat, improve the profile's calls to action: the description, a booking link, and current offers.

### Approve larger investments

A website redesign, a new menu page, or professional photography needs the owner's approval. Evaluate each one by payback. For example, a redesign raises the conversion rate from 2% to 4% on 1,000 monthly organic visitors. That adds 20 conversions a month. Payback period = redesign cost ÷ (20 × LTV). If the redesign costs about ten customers' LTV, it pays back in about two weeks.

### Check the competition

Search your category and city, such as "Italian restaurant City A" or "HVAC repair City B". Are you in the local pack, the map with three businesses? If not, find the cause: fewer reviews, inconsistent listings, or weak content. Look at the competitors that outrank you. Compare their profiles (photos, reviews, posts) and their websites (content, speed, calls to action). Give the findings to the manager or marketer.

Do not spend owner time on meta tags or blog posts. Delegate execution and watch the results.

## Manager: run the profile, 30 minutes a day

The manager is on site every day, talks to customers, and sees feedback as it happens. That makes the manager the right person to maintain the Google Business Profile.

### Daily: answer every review within 24 hours

For a positive review, thank the customer by name, mention what they praised, and invite them back. For a negative review, apologize, acknowledge the problem, and offer to resolve it offline. Never argue or make excuses. Replies show prospective customers how the business treats people.

A positive reply template:

```text
Hi [Name], thank you for the review. We're glad you enjoyed
[specific dish or service], and we look forward to your next visit.
```

A negative reply template:

```text
Hi [Name], we're sorry about your experience. It isn't the standard
we hold ourselves to. Please contact us at [phone or email] so we
can make it right. We'd welcome another chance to serve you.
```

### Weekly: post 1 to 3 updates

Use three post types:

- A highlight: a photo of today's special, a new menu item, or a seasonal service, such as "Pumpkin ravioli is back this week."
- An offer: happy hour details, a loyalty program, or a promotion.
- An event: live music, holiday hours, or a community sponsorship.

Give each post a real photo, not a stock image. Add 100 to 150 words and a call to action such as "Reserve your table". Consistency beats polish. A simple photo and caption three times a week does more than one perfect post.

### Weekly: upload 5 to 10 photos

Cover five categories:

- Exterior: storefront, signage, and parking, so customers find you.
- Interior: dining room, bar, and decor, so customers know what to expect.
- Food and products: dishes and drinks.
- Team: staff photos, with consent.
- Logo: a high-resolution version.

Take photos with a phone during service, and upload them weekly.

### Weekly: answer customer questions

Where Google shows a questions section on your profile, check it weekly. Answer each question within 24 hours, before another user answers it wrongly. Add the common questions yourself: hours, reservations, parking, a kids menu, and vegan options. Link to the menu or booking page in the answer.

### Monthly: check listings and ask for reviews

Check that your name, address, and phone number (NAP) match everywhere. Cover your profile, website, Facebook, Yelp, Bing Places, Apple Maps, and Yellow Pages. The section on NAP below gives the method.

Ask satisfied customers for reviews. Aim for 1 or 2 new reviews a week. Ask right after a positive moment, such as a compliment on the meal. Ask in person, and then text or email a direct link to your review form. Never offer a discount or a free item for a review. Google's policies prohibit incentives, and a violation can remove reviews or suspend the profile.

The work fits the existing routine: answer reviews during morning admin, take photos during service, and post at closing.

## Marketer: plan, write, and measure, 3 to 5 hours a week

The marketer, in-house or freelance, owns strategy, website content, and measurement. The marketer does not do the daily profile work; that belongs to the manager.

### Monthly: research keywords and competitors

Build a list of 10 to 20 keywords in the pattern `[service or product] + [city or neighborhood]`. For an Italian restaurant in City A, a mid-size metro: "Italian restaurant City A", "best pasta City A ST", "romantic dinner City A", "Italian catering City A", and "gluten-free Italian City A". Check volume and competition in Google Keyword Planner, Ahrefs, or Semrush. Start with keywords above 100 monthly searches and below 30 keyword difficulty.

Study the top 3 local competitors in the local pack and the organic results for your main keyword. Compare their profiles on review count, rating, post frequency, and photo count. Compare their websites on content depth, PageSpeed Insights speed, and mobile layout. Read their reviews. What customers praise and what they complain about tell you what to write and how to position the business.

### Monthly: plan 2 to 4 pages

Plan four content types:

- Location pages, one per area you serve, such as North City A, Downtown City A, and City B.
- Service pages, such as "Italian Catering City A", "Private Dining City A", and "Takeout Italian Food City A".
- Information content, such as "Gluten-Free Italian Dining in City A" or "Italian Wines to Pair with Pasta".
- Seasonal content, such as a Valentine's Day menu or holiday catering options.

### Weekly: write and publish one page

Write 800 to 1,500 words with this structure:

1. An H1 with the keyword, such as "Italian Catering City A ST".
2. An introduction of about 150 words: what the page covers and why it matters to the reader.
3. Three to five H2 sections on subtopics, such as the catering menu, corporate events, weddings, packages, and how to order.
4. Answers to common questions, such as delivery, minimum orders, and dietary needs.
5. A short close with a call to action.

Put the keyword in the title, the URL (such as `/italian-catering-raleigh/`), the meta description, and the H1. Also use it in the first paragraph, some H2 headings, and image alt text. Add `LocalBusiness` or `Restaurant` schema markup. Google limited FAQ rich results to government and health sites in August 2023, so do not expect them from `FAQPage` markup.

Link to the menu, about, and contact pages. Share each new page in a profile post and on social media. For the schema types, read the [schema markup types guide](/articles/schema-markup-types-guide).

### Weekly: watch the numbers and adjust

Track four things in GA4 and Google Search Console:

- Organic sessions: in GA4, the traffic acquisition report filtered to organic search.
- Top landing pages: the GA4 pages and screens report.
- Queries and positions: the Search Console performance report.
- Conversions: calls, bookings, and orders from organic visitors, set up as GA4 key events.

Turn the results into actions. If "Gluten-Free Italian City A" ranks at position 5 and brings 200 visits a month, write more dietary pages: vegan, keto, and paleo. If "Italian Catering City A" ranks at position 15 with 10 visits, add client stories and package details. Then earn links from event planners and wedding blogs.

### Monthly: share a dashboard

Send the owner and manager a one-page dashboard:

```text
Month: January 2026
Google Business Profile:
- Views: 3,200 (up 15% on December)
- Actions: 180 calls, 450 direction requests, 90 website clicks
- Reviews: 42 total, 4.6 average (4 new this month)
Website:
- Organic sessions: 1,200 (up 20% on December)
- Top pages: homepage 400, menu 250, catering 150
- Conversion rate: 3% (36 conversions: 20 calls, 10 reservations,
  6 catering inquiries)
Rankings:
- "Italian restaurant City A": position 4 (up 2)
- "Best pasta City A": position 7 (up 1)
- "Italian catering City A": position 12 (up 3)
Return:
- Estimated revenue: 36 conversions x average transaction value
- Return on investment: 80% (revenue 1.8 times the SEO investment)
```

For how to structure this reporting as the business grows, read [SEO reporting for marketing managers](/articles/seo-reporting-marketing-managers).

### When there is no marketer

A business that cannot fund a full-time marketer can hire a fractional marketer or a freelance SEO specialist for 10 to 15 hours a month. That usually costs less than a full-time hire until revenue justifies one. Outsource while the business is small. Add a part-time marketer as revenue grows. Hire a full-time marketing manager, with outside technical support, only when the revenue supports the salary. Many local businesses hire full-time too early.

## Decide when to outsource technical work

Few local businesses have technical SEO skill in-house. Site speed, schema markup, mobile layout, and crawl errors need a developer.

Do it yourself when:

- The site runs on WordPress, Squarespace, Wix, or Shopify.
- The work is text changes, image uploads, and blog posts.
- Someone on the team will learn the basics, for example with the Yoast SEO plugin on WordPress.

Outsource when:

- The site has technical problems: slow pages, broken links, JavaScript errors, or rendering failures.
- You need schema markup for `LocalBusiness`, `Restaurant`, `Product`, or reviews.
- The site does not work well on phones. Many local searches happen on mobile.
- You plan a redesign or a migration. A migration done wrong can lose rankings, so hire a specialist.

Find help on Upwork, Fiverr, or Toptal, or from a local agency with restaurant or service case studies. Platform specialists include Codeable for WordPress and Storetasker for Shopify. Plan for a one-time technical audit with fixes. Then plan light monthly support for crawl errors, schema updates, and broken links.

## Keep name, address, and phone consistent

Google compares your business details across the web. Formatting differences make one business look like several:

| Source | Name | Address | Phone |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Business Profile | Joe's Italian Kitchen | 123 Main St, City A, ST 00000 | (555) 555-0100 |
| Website | Joe's Italian Kitchen & Bar | 123 Main Street, City A, ST 00000 | 555-555-0100 |
| Yelp | Joes Italian Kitchen | 123 Main St., City A ST 00000 | (555) 555-0100 |

These three listings describe one business. The differences split the local ranking signals instead of combining them.

To fix it:

1. Choose one canonical format and write it down. For example: name "Joe's Italian Kitchen", address "123 Main St, City A, ST 00000", phone "(555) 555-0100". Share the document with everyone who edits listings.
2. Audit each listing. Start with Google Business Profile and your website footer and contact page. Then check Bing Places, Apple Business Connect, Facebook, Yelp, Yellow Pages, and industry directories. For restaurants, check OpenTable, Resy, and Tripadvisor. For services, check Angi, HomeAdvisor, and Thumbtack. Track each one in a sheet with the columns Platform, Current NAP, Correct, Priority, and Date fixed.
3. Correct the high-authority listings first: Google, Bing, Apple, Yelp, and Facebook. Fix smaller directories over time.
4. Consider a citation service. Yext, BrightLocal, and Moz Local sync your details across many directories and watch for changes. As of March 2026, Moz Local had the lowest list price of the three and Yext the highest. A service is worth it when you find 10 or more inconsistencies, lack the time for manual updates, or need ongoing monitoring. It is not worth it when your listings already match or you have fewer than 5.

## Build a review system

Google ranks local results on relevance, distance, and prominence. Reviews are a major part of prominence. A steady flow of recent, positive reviews helps you compete in the local pack. Many businesses get few reviews because they have no system.

1. Find the review moments. For a restaurant, it is right after a great meal or a compliment to the server. For a service business, it is when the customer thanks you at project completion. For retail, it is when a customer says they love the product.
2. Train staff to ask. A script: "We're glad you enjoyed [the meal / our service / the product]. If you have a minute, would you leave us a Google review? It helps a small business like ours. I can text you the link now." Keep the review link ready in a notes app.
3. Automate the follow-up. If a loyalty program, online orders, or bookings give you emails or phone numbers, send a review request 1 to 3 days after the visit. Use Mailchimp, Constant Contact, or an SMS tool such as SimpleTexting. Ask every customer on the list, not only the ones you expect to be happy. Google's policies prohibit selective requests for positive reviews.
4. Track and share. Watch new reviews weekly. Share good reviews with the staff who earned them. Answer negative reviews publicly, follow up privately, and fix the problem. Then invite the customer to update the review.

Aim for 2 to 4 new reviews a month with fewer than 10 employees. Aim for 5 to 10 with 10 to 50 employees. After 12 months, that is 25 to 50 reviews, or 60 to 120. Compare the total with the businesses that hold the local pack for your main query. For the profile settings that support this, read the [Google Business Profile optimization guide](/articles/google-business-profile-optimization).

## Start fast, and expect the timeline

The fastest win is a complete Google Business Profile, in 60 to 90 minutes. Fill in every field: name, address, phone, hours, categories, services, attributes, and description. Upload 20 or more photos. Publish 3 posts, and answer every existing review. Profile changes can lift local pack visibility within weeks. Website SEO takes 3 to 6 months, because Google assesses content quality, links, and engagement over time.

National chains win their own brand searches, such as "Starbucks hours". A local business wins specific, high-intent searches, such as "best Italian restaurant City A" or "gluten-free brunch City A". Compete on niche keywords, neighborhood terms, and what makes you different: local sourcing, family recipes, a chef-owner, or dietary specialties. For wider local methods, read [local SEO for marketing managers](/articles/local-seo-marketing-managers).
