# Learn the SEO terms you need to work with search specialists.

A search specialist asks a product manager to "fix the canonical tags". An executive sees "Core Web Vitals" and "E-E-A-T" in a report. A developer gets a ticket to "fix crawl budget issues" with no way to diagnose it. Each of them must act on words they do not know.

This glossary gives each common SEO term in plain language, grouped by topic.

## Learn the terms your role needs

You do not need every term. Focus on the groups that match your work:

- Developers: technical terms, such as crawl budget, rendering, redirects, and Core Web Vitals.
- Marketers and content teams: content strategy terms and analytics terms.
- Executives: strategic terms, such as authority, algorithm updates, penalties, organic traffic, conversion rate, E-E-A-T, and YMYL.

SEO vocabulary comes from more than 25 years of computer science, marketing, data analysis, and web development. Core concepts, such as backlinks and keyword research, stay stable. Specific metrics and features change. PageRank was once the central signal and is now one of many. Google announced Core Web Vitals in 2020 and replaced one of the three metrics in March 2024.

## Core concepts

| Term | What it means |
|---|---|
| Organic search | Unpaid search results that appear because they are relevant to the query. They are separate from paid ads. You cannot buy organic rankings directly. They come from content quality, technical quality, and authority signals. |
| SERP (search engine results page) | The page that shows results after a search. It can include organic results, paid ads, featured snippets, local packs, AI Overviews, and other features, depending on the query. |
| Ranking factors | The many signals a search engine uses to decide which pages to show and in what order. Major factors include content relevance, page experience, backlink quality, and mobile usability. |
| Algorithm | The system that Google and other search engines use to evaluate and rank pages. It changes often. Google releases several broad "core updates" each year, and they can change rankings significantly. |
| Indexation | The process in which a search engine discovers, crawls, and adds a page to its index. A page that is not indexed cannot appear in search results. |
| Keyword | A word or phrase that people type into a search engine. Keyword research finds the terms your audience uses and how often. |
| Search intent | The goal behind a query. The four common types are informational (learn something), navigational (find a specific site), commercial investigation (research a purchase), and transactional (buy now). |
| Domain Authority | A Moz metric that predicts how well a site can rank. It is not a Google metric. Sites with higher scores tend to outrank lower ones for competitive keywords. |
| Crawl budget | The number of pages search engine bots crawl on your site in a given period. A large site can use up its crawl budget, and some pages then stay unindexed or out of date in search results. |

For more on intent types and how they shape a page, read [search intent explained](/articles/search-intent-explained).

## On-page elements

| Term | What it means |
|---|---|
| Title tag | The HTML element that sets the page title in browser tabs and search results: `<title>Page Title - Brand Name</title>`. It is an important ranking element, and it affects click-through rate. |
| Meta description | The HTML element that gives the page summary that search results can show under the title: `<meta name="description" content="Page summary...">`. It is not a direct ranking factor. A clear description can raise click-through rate. |
| H1, H2, H3 tags | HTML heading tags that set the content hierarchy. H1 is the main page title, H2 marks major sections, and H3 marks subsections. A correct structure helps readers and search engines. |
| Alt text | A text description of an image. Screen readers use it for visually impaired users, and search engines use it for context: `<img src="photo.jpg" alt="Description of image contents">`. Alt text helps images rank in image search. |
| Internal links | Links from one page on your site to another page on your site. They spread ranking signals across pages, help search engines discover content, and guide users to related information. |
| Canonical tag | An HTML element that names the preferred URL when the same or similar content exists at several URLs: `<link rel="canonical" href="https://example.com/preferred-url">`. It prevents duplicate content problems. |
| Schema markup | Structured data code that helps search engines understand the meaning of a page. It can enable rich results, such as review stars and product details. Since August 2023, Google shows FAQ rich results only for well-known government and health sites. |
| Breadcrumbs | Navigation that shows the page's place in the site hierarchy, such as Home > Category > Subcategory > Current Page. They help users. With breadcrumb schema, Google can show them in desktop results. |
| URL structure | The format of web addresses. A clean, descriptive URL (`example.com/running-shoes`) works better for users and search engines than a cryptic one (`example.com/prod?id=12345`). |
| Content depth | How completely the page answers the query. Google does not use word count as a ranking factor; length follows from complete coverage. |

When a specialist asks you to fix duplicate URLs, read [canonical tags for developers](/articles/canonical-tags-developers) for the implementation.

## Technical terms

| Term | What it means |
|---|---|
| `robots.txt` | A text file at the site root that tells crawlers which paths to crawl or skip. A minimal rule is `User-agent: *` on one line and `Disallow: /admin/` on the next. A wrong rule can block important content. It controls crawling, not indexing: a blocked URL can still appear in results if other pages link to it. |
| XML sitemap | A file that lists the important URLs on your site, usually at `/sitemap.xml`. You submit it to search engines so that they find your content. It matters most for large sites and new content. |
| Core Web Vitals | Three metrics that measure user experience: Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) for loading, Interaction to Next Paint (INP) for responsiveness, and Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS) for visual stability. INP replaced First Input Delay (FID) in March 2024. Google uses these metrics as part of its page experience signals. |
| Mobile-first indexing | Google uses the mobile version of a page for indexing and ranking, including for desktop searches. The mobile site must have the same content and function as the desktop site. |
| HTTPS | A secure protocol that encrypts data between the user and the site. Google uses it as a ranking signal. Browsers warn users about sites without it. |
| 301 redirect | A permanent redirect from one URL to another. Use it when you move a page or combine content. It passes ranking signals from the old URL to the new one. |
| 404 error | A status code that says no page exists at the URL. Many 404 errors make a poor user experience and can point to broken internal links that need fixes. |
| Page speed | How fast page content loads and responds. Slow pages lose visitors. Faster pages come from image compression, caching, and lean code. |
| JavaScript rendering | The step in which a browser or crawler runs JavaScript to build the page content. Heavy dependence on JavaScript can delay indexation, because the crawler must run the code to see the full content. |
| Crawlability | Whether search engine bots can reach and move through your site. Broken links, server errors, and wrong `robots.txt` rules reduce it. |

For the metrics a developer must measure and fix, read the [Core Web Vitals developer guide](/articles/core-web-vitals-developer-guide).

## Links and authority

| Term | What it means |
|---|---|
| Backlink | A link from another website to yours. Search engines read backlinks as votes for the content. Quality backlinks from authoritative sites improve rankings significantly. |
| Link equity | The ranking value that passes from one page to another through links. SEOs also call it "link juice". High-authority pages pass more value than low-authority pages. It flows through internal and external links. |
| Nofollow link | A link with the `rel="nofollow"` attribute. It asks search engines not to pass ranking credit. It still brings referral traffic and exposure, but little direct SEO value. |
| Anchor text | The clickable text of a link. Descriptive anchor text helps search engines understand the linked page. "Running shoes guide" says more than "click here". |
| Link building | The work of earning backlinks from other sites. Accepted methods include linkable content, digital PR, guest articles, and partnership outreach. Bought links and link schemes violate Google's spam policies. |
| Toxic links | Low-quality links from spam or unrelated sites that can hurt rankings. They come from negative SEO attacks or from past low-quality link building. Google states that its systems ignore most spam links. |
| Disavow file | A file you submit to Google that lists backlinks you want it to ignore. Google advises its use mainly when you have many artificial links that caused, or are likely to cause, a manual action. |
| Domain Rating (DR) | An Ahrefs metric, on a 0 to 100 scale, based on the quality and number of backlinks. Sites with higher DR tend to rank better, but DR is not a Google ranking factor. |
| Link velocity | The rate at which a site gains new backlinks. A sudden spike of low-quality links can look like spam. Steady, natural growth looks organic. |
| Link relevance | How closely the linking site's topic matches yours. A tech blog that links to a software company carries more weight than an unrelated site. |

## Content strategy

| Term | What it means |
|---|---|
| Keyword research | The process of finding the terms people search for and analyzing their volume, competition, and relevance. It makes content target real demand, not assumed interest. |
| Search volume | The average number of monthly searches for a keyword. High volume shows demand, and it often comes with more competition. |
| Keyword difficulty | A tool metric that estimates how hard it is to rank for a keyword, based on the pages that rank now. Higher difficulty needs better content, more authority, and more backlinks. |
| Long-tail keywords | Longer, more specific phrases with lower volume and often higher purchase intent. Example: "best trail running shoes for wide feet" compared with "running shoes". |
| Content gap analysis | Finding the topics that competitors rank for and your site does not cover. It shows where you can gain search share. |
| Topical authority | How far search engines treat your site as a complete, expert source on a topic. You build it by covering a subject thoroughly across many related articles. |
| Content cluster | A group of related articles around a central pillar page. Example: a pillar page on "email marketing" with cluster articles on segmentation, automation, and deliverability. Clusters show topical authority and create internal links. |
| Featured snippet | A result that appears above the standard organic results and answers the query directly. Google takes the text from a high-ranking page. It can bring substantial traffic. |
| People Also Ask (PAA) | A results feature that shows related questions. Content that answers them can earn extra visibility. |
| E-E-A-T | Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness. Google's framework for content quality, applied most strictly to YMYL topics. |

## Analytics and measurement

| Term | What it means |
|---|---|
| Google Analytics | Google's web analytics platform. It tracks traffic, user behavior, conversions, and traffic sources. GA4 is the current version. Universal Analytics stopped processing data in July 2023. |
| Google Search Console | Google's service that shows how your site appears in search. It reports the queries that bring traffic, ranking positions, indexation status, and technical problems. |
| Impressions | The number of times your pages appeared in search results, with or without a click. High impressions with few clicks point to a click-through rate problem. |
| Click-through rate (CTR) | The share of impressions that became clicks: (Clicks / Impressions) × 100. CTR falls with position. Older aggregate studies put position 1 near 28% and position 10 near 2%. Search features such as AI Overviews change these values. |
| Bounce rate | In GA4, the share of sessions that were not engaged. An engaged session lasts 10 seconds or more, has a key event, or has 2 or more page views. In Universal Analytics, it was the share of single-page sessions. A high rate can mean the content does not match intent. |
| Pages per session | The average number of pages viewed in a visit. Higher values suggest engaging content and good internal links. |
| Conversion rate | The share of visitors who complete a target action, such as a purchase, signup, or download. The organic conversion rate helps you calculate SEO return and set priorities. |
| Ranking position | Where your page appears in results for a keyword. Position 1 is the top organic result. Position 11 is the top of page 2. |
| Keyword cannibalization | Several pages on your site compete for the same keyword and weaken each other. Combine or differentiate the pages to fix it. |
| Traffic value | The estimated cost to buy your organic traffic through paid search. Tools calculate it from the cost per click of each keyword that brings organic traffic. |

For the metrics each team should own, read [SEO KPIs by role](/articles/seo-kpis-by-role).

## Advanced terms

| Term | What it means |
|---|---|
| YMYL (Your Money or Your Life) | Google's label for content that can affect a person's safety, health, finances, or wellbeing. YMYL content meets stricter quality standards and needs stronger E-E-A-T signals. |
| Local SEO | Optimization for businesses that serve a specific area. It includes Google Business Profile optimization, local citations, and location pages. |
| Local pack | The map-based block of local businesses for location queries. To appear in it, you need a Google Business Profile and local optimization. |
| Voice search | Queries spoken to voice assistants, such as Siri or Alexa. Voice queries tend to be longer and more conversational than typed queries. |
| Image SEO | Optimization of images for image search, through descriptive file names, alt text, structured data, and compression. Image search brings significant traffic for visual products. |
| Video SEO | Optimization of video for YouTube and Google search, through keywords in titles and descriptions, transcripts, and engagement signals. |
| International SEO | Optimization for sites that target several countries or languages. It includes `hreflang` tags for language and region, and a choice of domain structure by country. |
| Penalty | A ranking suppression for a site that violates search engine guidelines. It can be algorithmic (automatic) or manual (applied by a reviewer). To recover, fix the violation. For a manual action, file a reconsideration request. |
| Black hat SEO | Manipulative tactics that violate search engine guidelines, such as bought links, keyword stuffing, and cloaking. |
| White hat SEO | Practices that follow search engine guidelines and aim for long-term growth through quality content and good user experience. |
