# Configure WooCommerce so search engines can rank your whole catalog.

You run an online store on WordPress with WooCommerce. You control the theme, the plugins, the server, and every URL. A hosted platform such as Shopify restricts some of that control.

That control cuts both ways. A well configured WooCommerce store can outrank competitors on technical quality. A poorly configured store creates duplicate URLs, thin archive pages, and slow pages that suppress the whole catalog.

## Write product pages that can compete

Default WooCommerce product pages often carry a manufacturer paragraph and little else. That is thin content, and it does not compete in product searches.

Build each product title from brand, product type, and key attribute. Use this pattern: `Brand - Product Type - Key Attribute | Store Name`. For example: `Nike Air Zoom Pegasus 40 - Men's Running Shoes - Breathable Mesh | Running Gear Pro`. Include the identifiers that a shopper types. Do not repeat keywords to fill the title.

WooCommerce gives each product two description fields. They do different jobs:

- The short description appears in product summaries and can feed schema markup. Keep it to 50 to 100 words about the main benefits and differences.
- The long description gives full detail. Write 300 to 500 words or more about materials, sizes, care, use cases, and comparison with similar products.

Do not paste the manufacturer description as it is. Thousands of stores use that same text, and every copy competes with the others as duplicate content.

### Add Product schema

Product schema lets Google show price, stock status, and ratings in search results. Rank Math and Schema Pro can add Product schema automatically. After you configure the plugin, confirm that each product page outputs these properties:

- `name`, `description`, `sku`, `brand`, and `image`
- `offers`, with `price`, `priceCurrency`, and `availability`
- `aggregateRating`, if the product has reviews

For the full property set by page type, read [schema markup for ecommerce stores](/articles/ecommerce-schema-markup).

### Name and describe product images

Images affect load time and image search. Give each file a descriptive name before you upload it. Use `nike-air-zoom-pegasus-40-mens-running-shoe-side-view.jpg`, not `IMG_5423.jpg`.

Write alt text that describes the image: "Side view of Nike Air Zoom Pegasus 40 men's running shoe in black and white colorway." Upload several images per product. Show different angles, the product in use, and close views of details.

### Keep variations on one URL

A size or color variation must not get its own URL. WooCommerce variable products keep all variations under one product URL by default. The shopper selects size, color, or another attribute from a dropdown list. Keep that structure.

Some plugins create a URL for each variation, such as `/product/shirt-blue-large` and `/product/shirt-red-medium`. Do not use them. Dozens of near-identical pages split the ranking signals that one page would otherwise collect.

## Design categories and tags for shoppers

Product categories and product tags make the site architecture. They control how shoppers move through the store and how search engines understand the catalog.

Name categories the way customers think. "Men's Running Shoes" works. "Athletic Footwear - Category 127" does not. Category names become URL slugs and page titles, so use the words shoppers use. Keep category depth to three levels at most: parent, child, grandchild. Deeper levels bury products.

### Give category pages real text

By default, WooCommerce shows a category as a product grid with no text. That makes a thin page. Add a description of 200 to 400 words to each category. Cover these four points:

1. What the category contains.
2. What makes the products in this category different.
3. What a buyer should consider before purchase.
4. Why customers choose these products.

Show the description above or below the product grid through your theme settings. For layout and copy patterns, read [ecommerce category page SEO](/articles/ecommerce-category-page-seo).

### Use tags sparingly

Tags add a second classification across categories. If categories hold product types, tags hold attributes such as "waterproof", "vegan leather", "beginner-friendly", or "professional grade".

Each tag creates an archive page. A tag archive with three or four products and no text gives little value and uses crawl budget. You have two choices:

- Set tag and attribute archives to `noindex` in Rank Math or Yoast SEO. This is the right default for most stores.
- Write 300 or more words of unique text for a tag page, and then let search engines index it.

Link related categories to each other. The "Men's Running Shoes" category page should link to "Men's Running Apparel" and "Running Accessories". These links help shoppers find related products. They also show search engines the topic relationship between the pages.

If your store uses layered filters for size, color, and price, the filter URLs can multiply faster than tags. [Faceted navigation for ecommerce](/articles/ecommerce-seo-faceted-navigation) covers how to control them.

## Choose plugins for function and speed

The WordPress plugin library offers many WooCommerce extensions. Each plugin can add code, database queries, and scripts to every page. Too many plugins slow the store, and a slow store loses rankings.

### Install one SEO plugin

Choose one of Rank Math, Yoast SEO, or SEOPress. Do not install two. Two SEO plugins conflict and duplicate each other's output. Configure the plugin to do these four jobs:

1. Generate an XML sitemap for products.
2. Add schema markup automatically.
3. Give you control of meta titles and descriptions.
4. Add breadcrumb navigation with breadcrumb schema.

The three plugins differ in the features they give away. In a March 2026 review, Rank Math offered the widest free feature set, with advanced schema and a Google Search Console connection. Yoast SEO kept some advanced features in its paid Premium version. SEOPress balanced features and performance. Any of the three works when you configure it correctly.

### Add performance plugins

WooCommerce uses many server resources. These plugins reduce the load:

- WP Rocket or W3 Total Cache for page caching.
- Perfmatters to turn off WordPress features and scripts you do not use.
- Smush or ShortPixel for automatic image compression.

These plugins improve Core Web Vitals scores, which are part of how Google assesses page experience.

### Remove what you do not use

Audit the plugin list each quarter. Inventory and review plugins often add weight. Remove each plugin whose feature you do not use.

When you need several related features, choose one plugin that does all of them. One review plugin for reviews, questions, and customer photos costs less performance than three separate plugins.

For small needs, a child theme is often better than a plugin. A custom product field or a small layout change needs a few lines of code, not a new plugin. Ask a developer for a code solution before you add another plugin.

### Control updates

Old plugins create security holes and can conflict with a new WordPress core version. Turn on automatic updates for minor plugin releases. Test each major release in a staging copy before you apply it to the live store. A compromised store can expose customer data, and Google can warn searchers away from it.

## Set up the technical base

WooCommerce builds each page from the database on request. That design affects crawl efficiency, page speed, and scale.

### Use descriptive permalinks

Go to `Settings > Permalinks`. Choose "Post name", or a custom structure such as `/%category%/%postname%/` for products. Do not use the default numeric format, `?p=123`. A readable URL helps shoppers and gives search engines a clear signal about the page.

### Handle pagination correctly

Shop and category pages split into numbered pages. Give each paginated page a canonical tag that points to itself, not to page 1. Keep plain HTML links between the pages so that crawlers can reach every product.

Older guides tell you to add `rel="next"` and `rel="prev"`. Google stated in March 2019 that it no longer uses those tags for indexing. They do no harm, and other search engines can still read them. Do not depend on them.

### Clean the database

A large catalog fills the database with product data, variations, orders, revisions, and expired transients. Use WP-Optimize to remove post revisions, transients, and orphaned data automatically. Schedule the cleanup weekly, at a low-traffic hour.

### Cache without breaking the cart

Full-page caching breaks the cart if you apply it to every page. Exclude the cart, checkout, and my-account pages from the cache. Cache product and category pages aggressively. LiteSpeed Cache includes preset WooCommerce rules for this.

### Serve media from a CDN

A content delivery network (CDN) serves product images, videos, and downloads from servers near the shopper. Cloudflare and BunnyCDN both connect to WordPress with little setup. A CDN reduces load on your server and improves Core Web Vitals for shoppers far from it.

## Manage stock changes without lost rankings

A product that goes out of stock creates a conflict. If you delete the page, you lose its rankings. If you keep it, shoppers find a product they cannot buy. Use a different rule for each case.

For a product that is out of stock for a time, keep the page live:

- Show a clear "Out of Stock" message.
- Offer an email alert when the product returns.
- Set the schema `availability` value to `OutOfStock`.

The page keeps its search value and turns visits into waitlist signups.

For a product you discontinue, add a 301 redirect to its replacement or to the most similar current product. The redirect passes the old page's links and rankings to a live page. It also stops shoppers with old bookmarks from a 404 error. Point each redirect straight at its final URL. A redirect chain wastes crawl budget and slows the page.

For a popular product you discontinue, also publish a comparison article, such as "Product X discontinued: the best alternatives". That article captures branded searches for the old product and shows shoppers what to buy now.

For a product with low stock, show a message such as "Only 3 remaining" or "Limited stock available". The message encourages a faster purchase and prepares shoppers for a sell-out.

For a seasonal product, keep the page live all year. Do not delete Halloween costumes in November. Add a note such as "Seasonal item: available September to October". The page keeps its rankings, and you do not rebuild them each year.

The [out-of-stock pages guide](/articles/out-of-stock-pages-seo) covers more cases, including products that never return.

## Earn links for a product catalog

Few sites link to a product listing. Links to your other pages still raise the authority of the whole domain.

Resource content attracts editorial links. Write full buying guides, product comparisons, and educational articles about your categories. "Complete Guide to Choosing Running Shoes" ranks for information queries. It can also attract links from running blogs and fitness sites.

Ask the brands you sell for a listing. Many brands keep a "Where to Buy" page that links to authorized retailers. Those links are relevant, and they can send referral traffic.

Join trade associations, local business groups, and professional organizations. Most list members in a directory with a link. One listing has small value; several relevant listings add up.

Some stores fund a student scholarship in a related field and promote it to university financial aid offices. Scholarship directories on `.edu` domains then link to the store. Google's spam policies treat links made mainly to manipulate rankings as link spam. Run a scholarship only if it is a real program you would fund without the links.

Affiliate programs and influencer partnerships turn content creators into link sources. Affiliate links usually carry `rel="sponsored"` or `nofollow`, so they pass little ranking value. They still bring traffic and brand exposure. Some creators also link to you in their own editorial content, and those links can pass value.

## Connect online products to physical stores

A store with physical locations must rank for product searches and for local "near me" searches.

Complete a Google Business Profile for each location. Include the business name, address, phone number, hours, photos, and product categories. Ask in-store customers for Google reviews. Reviews affect local pack rankings.

Create a landing page for each location. Target keywords of the form "[city] [product category]", such as "Austin running shoe store". Include these items on each page:

- Products available at that location.
- Store hours and contact details.
- Directions and parking.
- Reviews from local customers.
- Local promotions or events.

Add `LocalBusiness` schema to each location page. Include `name`, `address`, `telephone`, `openingHours`, `geo` coordinates, and `url`. If the page also lists products, combine it with Product schema.

Publish local posts about events, sponsorships, and partnerships, such as "Supporting the Austin Marathon". They target local keywords.

Offer buy online, pick up in store (BOPIS), and show which locations stock each product. Shoppers who research online and want the product today then choose your store over a shipped order.

## Convert organic visitors

Many organic visitors arrive from an information search, early in the purchase decision. Plan for a range of intent.

An exit-intent popup appears when the pointer moves toward the browser's close button. It can offer a first-order discount, such as "Take 15% off your first order". Make the popup easy to dismiss. On mobile, do not let it cover the main content. Google's intrusive interstitial guidelines can demote pages that do.

Show product recommendations such as "Customers who viewed this also viewed" and "You might also like". YITH WooCommerce Compare or the native WooCommerce recommendation features can do this. Recommendations raise pages per session and average order value.

Show security badges, payment method logos, shipping guarantees, and customer service contact details in the checkout. A first-time visitor from search needs more reassurance than a repeat customer.

Make the checkout short:

- Allow guest checkout, with no forced account.
- Ask only for the fields you need.
- Show a progress indicator in a multi-step checkout.

Add retargeting pixels for Meta, Google, and other ad platforms. Build audiences of organic visitors who viewed a product and did not buy. This paid step gets more value from your search traffic.

## Compete with Amazon and decide on your platform

Amazon dominates generic product keywords. It serves some queries poorly:

- Niche product variations.
- Local product queries.
- Detailed buying guides and comparisons.
- Content that needs specialist knowledge.

Build content authority in your niche. Do not compete head-on for the generic term. Show the service, expertise, and focused selection that a broad marketplace does not give.

If you are deciding between WooCommerce and Shopify, compare your team's technical skill first. A well configured WooCommerce store can beat Shopify through custom URL structures, unlimited content depth, full schema control, and hosting choice. A poorly configured WooCommerce store falls below Shopify's default setup. A team with technical skills can use WooCommerce's control. A solo owner without that skill may do better with Shopify's defaults. The [Shopify SEO guide](/articles/seo-for-shopify-ecommerce) shows what that platform handles for you and where it limits you.
