# Earn editorial backlinks with digital PR instead of cold link requests.

Traditional link building means you find relevant sites and send each one a personal email that asks for a link. Every link costs manual effort, and most cold requests get no reply. A goal of 50 or more links a month needs a large team or an agency.

Digital PR turns the model around. You create something a journalist wants to cite: original data, expert comment, a useful tool. Coverage then carries the attribution link without a request. The effort goes into one reusable asset, and distribution gives compounding returns. One original study can earn links from every publication that cites its data.

## Know why editorial links are worth the effort

Link quality differs widely. A blog that accepts many guest posts gives each link little value. An editorial link from a journalist who covers real news carries more authority. One link from a respected news site or trade publication can outweigh many guest-post links.

Link velocity also improves over time. A journalist who covered you once comes back for the next story. A writer who used your research cites it again. The first campaign is the hardest. Each later campaign starts from relationships you already have.

Compare the tactics by links earned per hour of work in your own tracking, not by vendor claims. The shape of the effort also differs. PR needs upfront work on an asset. Manual link building spreads effort across many small tasks.

For how links fit the rest of the SEO program, and who should own them, read [who owns link building](/articles/link-building-2026-ownership).

## Publish original research

Journalists need quotable statistics. A company that publishes original research becomes a source worth a citation and a link.

### Run a survey

A survey asks your audience questions that produce newsworthy findings. Build it in Typeform or Google Forms. Collect at least 500 to 1,000 responses for credibility. Write questions that can reveal a surprising or counterintuitive result. If your own audience is too small, buy responses from a panel such as Pollfish or SurveyMonkey Audience.

Pick a topic where your expertise meets a wider interest. A company that sells project management software might survey remote work productivity problems. The topic sits next to the product but interests people who will never buy it.

Buffer's "State of Remote Work" report is the standard example. One edition surveyed nearly 2,500 remote workers about the benefits and problems of remote work. Buffer repeated the report for several years, and business publications, HR blogs, and remote work sites cite it.

### Analyze your own product data

Internal usage data can reveal industry patterns nobody else can see. Shopify publishes ecommerce benchmarks from merchant data. Gong analyzes sales calls to show which sales tactics work. RescueTime shares productivity data from user activity. Grammarly publishes writing statistics from user documents.

This route needs three things. You need enough data, from thousands of users. You need privacy compliance: anonymization and consent. You need data that competitors do not have.

### Compile public data

You can also collect public data into a more useful form. Examples include:

- salary surveys built from job listings;
- funding and acquisition databases built from press releases;
- technology adoption rates built from job postings that name tools;
- regional business trends built from census and business data.

Backlinko built authority this way with studies such as "We Analyzed 11.8 Million Google Search Results". The data was public. The analysis at scale showed patterns that no single searcher could see.

### Present the data so journalists can use it

Presentation matters as much as the data. Do these things for every study:

- make shareable graphics and charts;
- write a clear executive summary, because many journalists skim;
- format the key statistics so a journalist can copy them directly;
- include a methodology section that establishes credibility;
- offer embeddable charts with an attribution link;
- send a press release to relevant journalists and publications.

## Offer expert commentary

Reactive PR puts your experts in front of journalists when news breaks. Relevant, fast commentary earns coverage and links.

### Answer journalist queries

HARO (Help a Reporter Out) connected journalists who needed expert sources with the people who could answer. It sent three emails a day with journalist queries. The service changed owner and format more than once after 2024, so confirm how it works today. Similar journalist query services, such as Qwoted and Featured, work on the same principle.

When you answer a query, give clear and quotable expertise. State the company credentials and the spokesperson's title. Include a link to a relevant page on your site for attribution. Respond within two to three hours, because journalists work on tight deadlines.

Daily participation is a steady source of links from reputable publications, though seldom from top-tier media. Budget a fixed block of time each day, and log each answer and each resulting link.

### Respond to news within 24 hours

Newsjacking ties your expertise to a trending story. When major industry news breaks, publish expert analysis fast. An SEO company analyzes a Google algorithm update. A compliance firm explains a new privacy regulation. An analyst gives market context on a major funding round or acquisition. A developer explains the technical effect of a launch or a deprecation.

Publish within 24 hours, while the news is fresh. Journalists who look for expert views find and link to timely analysis.

### Write contributed articles

A contributed article puts an executive's name on an industry publication and earns an author byline link. Target publications your prospects read. Pitch a new angle on a current industry problem. Give practical insight, not promotion. Include one or two links to relevant resources, not to the homepage or a product page.

Harvard Business Review, Forbes, TechCrunch, and industry trade publications accept contributed content. Acceptance rates vary widely. Top business publications receive far more proposals than they publish, and industry trades accept a larger share. A successful placement gives a high-authority link and brand visibility.

### Appear on podcasts

A podcast appearance earns links from show notes and episode pages. It takes less effort than an article and reaches an engaged audience. Choose shows with a relevant audience of professionals and decision-makers in your space. Choose shows that publish weekly or every two weeks and link guests in show notes. Look for 500 or more downloads per episode.

Pitch a specific episode angle that shows expertise. "How we reached [a named revenue milestone] through content marketing" is a stronger pitch than "a talk about our company".

## Earn links through partnerships

Joint announcements, integrations, and shared content produce links for both partners.

An integration announcement between B2B companies gets coverage for both. An integration with an established platform such as Shopify, Salesforce, or HubSpot is news for both parties. It produces joint press releases, a partner directory listing with a link, and co-marketing content.

For example, a small marketing automation tool integrates with Salesforce. It earns links from these sources:

- the Salesforce AppExchange listing;
- the joint press release;
- both companies' announcement posts;
- publications that watch the Salesforce ecosystem.

Industry association membership produces links from member directories. A talk at an association conference adds a speaker bio link. Articles in association publications, award applications, and recognition announcements add more.

Certifications earn links from the certification body and from related press. Examples include SOC 2 reports, PCI DSS compliance, and ISO quality standards. Sustainability certifications, such as B Corp or carbon neutral status, also qualify.

## Build tools and templates that attract links

A free tool that solves a real problem attracts links from the people who use it. Tool types include:

- calculators for return on investment, pricing, or savings;
- generators for invoices, receipts, or quotes;
- graders and assessments, such as a website grader, an SEO audit, or a readability checker;
- converters for units or file formats.

HubSpot's Website Grader and CoSchedule's Headline Analyzer are the common examples. Each one earned links from marketing blogs and tool roundups for years. A tool needs product and engineering work up front. It then earns links for years without further outreach.

Templates and frameworks are reusable resources. Examples are spreadsheet templates for budgets and trackers and document templates for contracts and proposals. Process checklists and design templates for presentations also work. You can gate a template behind an email signup to capture leads. People still share template links in blog posts, forums, and social media.

Interactive content such as assessments, product recommendation quizzes, solution-specific calculators, and configurators also earns links. It costs more to build than static content. For a growth-stage company, the engagement and links usually justify the cost.

## Build a media database and pitch well

PR depends on relationships with the journalists who cover your industry. Cold pitches produce little. A warm relationship raises the chance of coverage sharply.

### Track every journalist

Record these fields for each journalist:

- name and publication;
- beat and topics;
- X handle and email address;
- past articles on topics like yours;
- outreach history and results.

Manage the list in BuzzStream, Pitchbox, or Airtable. Tag each journalist by category: top-tier publication, industry trade, freelancer, or blogger. Tags let you pitch the right group for each story.

Follow and engage with journalists on X before you pitch. Share their articles with a comment. Answer questions they post. Tag them in relevant content that is not your own. Recognition comes before the request.

### Write the pitch

Structure the email in five parts:

1. A subject line that says why it matters to them, such as "Data on [topic] you covered", not "Partnership opportunity".
2. A first sentence that shows you know their work, with a reference to a recent article.
3. A second sentence with the hook: a surprising statistic or a new angle.
4. A third sentence with the offer: data, an expert interview, or exclusive access.
5. A final sentence with a clear next step and a deadline.

Keep the pitch under 150 words. A journalist receives many pitches each week, and a short one is faster to judge.

Pitch Monday to Thursday, 8 to 11 a.m. in the journalist's time zone. Avoid Fridays, weekends, and late afternoons. Follow up once after three business days with no reply, then move on.

## Plan the budget, the team, and the timeline

Expect the first results within four to six weeks, as articles publish with links. The full SEO effect of the new authority appears over three to six months. Expect clear ranking gains after 6 to 12 months of steady work. Consistency matters more than one big campaign. A campaign every quarter builds compounding returns.

Commit for at least six months before you judge the results. As observed in March 2026, an agency program cost more each month than in-house work by an existing marketing team. A smaller budget still works with lower-cost tactics, such as query responses and newsjacking, which cost time more than money. Current agency rates are on each provider's own pricing page.

Hire an agency first if you lack PR experience or media relationships. Plan a 6 to 12 month engagement. Move the work in-house once you understand the process and hold the relationships.

A hybrid model also works well. The agency runs major campaigns, such as original research and top-tier pitches. The in-house team runs reactive PR: query responses, newsjacking, and podcast outreach. In-house work becomes the cheaper option at high, steady link volume.

## Measure what the program returns

Track six measures:

1. links earned;
2. authority of the referring domains;
3. referral traffic from PR links;
4. growth in domain authority;
5. ranking gains for target keywords;
6. organic traffic growth.

Calculate the cost per link and compare it with the alternatives, such as guest-post agencies and link insertion services. Then look past links. Measure brand awareness through [branded search growth](/articles/brand-search-lift-seo). Measure sales influence through opportunities that mention PR coverage.

## Find the story in a "boring" industry

Every industry has a newsworthy angle. A "boring" industry has an advantage in PR: fewer competitors pitch, and its data is less familiar to journalists. A plumbing company's data on home maintenance costs makes news. An accounting firm's view on tax changes earns coverage. A manufacturer's case study on supply chain changes interests trade publications.

Reframe your expertise as an answer to a problem that the journalist's audience has.
