# Build a Chrome extension stack for your SEO role so answers sit one click from the page.

An editor wants to know whether a new article's title will truncate in search results. A developer wants to know whether a product page's content exists before JavaScript runs. Both open three tools in separate tabs to answer a question the page in front of them could answer.

SEO Chrome extensions put data and functions inside the browser, so fewer questions need a tab switch. The right stack differs by role. Technical specialists need rendering and markup inspection. Content teams need readability and keyword data. Managers need quick competitive context.

Extensions change owners, features, and pricing often. The names below are the tools this article listed when it was first published (March 2026). Where a row names a type of extension instead of a product, several listings exist. Check each listing in the Chrome Web Store before you install it.

## Install a shared base for every SEO role

| Extension | What it shows | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| A Search Console data extension | Search Console impressions, clicks, click-through rate, and position inside Google results, for pages you control | Check whether a recent post ranks for its target keyword, and its real click-through rate, without leaving the results page |
| MozBar | Moz Domain Authority, Page Authority, and backlink counts for any page; highlights nofollow links; shows title, description, and headings | Judge whether a link prospect has enough authority to justify outreach |
| SEOquake | An instant on-page audit and a set of page metrics you can customize | Benchmark the optimization of pages that rank for your target keyword |
| Keyword Surfer | Search volume, cost per click, and related keywords inside Google results | Check volume for related queries during research without opening Google Keyword Planner |
| Detailed SEO Extension | Meta tags, headings, images with alt text, internal and external links, and markup, with export to a spreadsheet | Record a page's state before optimization as a baseline for comparison |

SEOquake once showed Alexa rank. Amazon retired Alexa.com in May 2022, so ignore any guide that still cites that metric. Treat Moz Domain Authority and similar scores as vendor estimates, not Google measures.

## Give technical specialists rendering and response tools

Technical work turns on one question: what does a crawler receive, and how does it differ from what a user sees? These extensions answer it from the page.

| Extension | What it shows | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| Lighthouse (built into Chrome DevTools, also a standalone extension) | Performance, accessibility, SEO, and best practices audits, including meta tags, crawlability, and structured data basics | Check a new page template before engineering merges the pull request |
| View Rendered Source | Raw HTML and rendered DOM side by side | Confirm that critical content in a React, Vue, or Angular app appears in the initial HTML; find JavaScript-injected content and A/B test variants that change what search engines see |
| A structured data validator extension | Markup on the current page checked against Schema.org, with errors and missing properties | Validate markup repeatedly during development, faster than a trip to the Rich Results Test |
| User-Agent Switcher | The page as Googlebot, a mobile device, or another client receives it | Confirm that mobile and desktop versions serve equivalent content, so no accidental cloaking occurs |
| Redirect Path (by Ayima) | The redirect chain and status codes, including 301, 302, JavaScript, and meta refresh redirects | Confirm during a migration that each old URL redirects once, not through several hops |
| HTTP Header Checker | Response headers such as cache control, security headers, and CDN details, without the DevTools Network tab | Confirm that the CDN serves cached content by comparing headers across several loads |

When content that users see does not appear in search, compare the rendered source with Google's own view. Google removed the cached-page link from results in early 2024, so use the rendered HTML in the Search Console URL Inspection tool instead. The [JavaScript SEO guide](/articles/javascript-seo-guide) covers the rendering causes and fixes. For redirect chains that Redirect Path exposes, the [guide to redirect chains for developers](/articles/redirect-chains-301-developers) explains the server-side cleanup. For markup errors that a validator reports, the [schema markup types guide](/articles/schema-markup-types-guide) lists the properties each type needs.

## Give content teams quality and research tools

Content teams need to catch errors, keep prose readable, check the search snippet, and research topics and outreach targets.

| Extension | What it shows | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| Grammarly | Grammar, spelling, and style corrections in browser text fields | Correct a draft in the CMS before editorial review; typos hurt reader trust |
| Hemingway Editor | Complex sentences, passive voice, and a readability grade | Find verbose sections before publication and bring the grade to the audience's level |
| SEO Meta in 1 Click | Title, meta description, canonical, Open Graph, and Twitter Card tags, with character counts | Confirm before publication that the title stays around 50 to 60 characters and the description around 150 to 160, so neither truncates |
| Link Redirect Trace (by LinkResearchTools) | Redirect chains and broken links | Check that external links in an article resolve without long redirect chains or 404 errors |
| Keywords Everywhere (paid) | Search volume, cost per click, and competition inline with Google results and Amazon suggestions | Compare variations during topic research without a separate tool |
| Similarweb | Estimated traffic, referral sources, and engagement for other sites | Judge whether a guest post host has enough traffic to justify the article |
| Hunter | Email addresses associated with a website | Find the editor's contact for a link request or guest post pitch without a manual LinkedIn search |

Google truncates titles by pixel width, not by character count, so the character guide is an approximation. Check a sample of real results when a title sits near the limit.

## Give developers debugging tools

Developers need to test degraded experiences, inspect framework components, read structured data, and profile performance.

| Tool | What it shows | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| Web Developer (by Chris Pederick) | A toolbar that disables JavaScript, CSS, images, and cookies | Confirm that core content and navigation work without JavaScript, for script blockers and failed crawler renders |
| React Developer Tools and Vue.js devtools | Component trees, props, and state | Confirm that a component passes the title and meta description to React Helmet or the framework's metadata API |
| JSON Formatter | Readable JSON in the browser | Inspect JSON-LD in the page source or responses from a headless CMS API |
| Wappalyzer | The CMS, JavaScript framework, CDN, and analytics a site uses | Study how competing sites handle rendering, CDN use, and tag management, or confirm that a migration kept the intended stack |
| Chrome DevTools (built in) | Coverage of unused CSS and JavaScript, Core Web Vitals in the Performance panel, resource loading in the Network panel, and errors in the Console | Measure Largest Contentful Paint during development and tune image loading to meet the 2.5-second target before deployment |

DevTools is not an extension, but no developer stack is complete without it. The [guide to Web Vitals in DevTools](/articles/core-web-vitals-debugging) walks through the performance panels.

## Give managers and executives context tools

Managers and executives need competitive benchmarks, quick health checks, and clean campaign tracking, not deep diagnostics.

| Tool | What it shows | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| Similarweb | Estimated monthly visits, traffic sources, and audience geography | Compare organic traffic share with the top 3 competitors each quarter to inform resource decisions |
| SEO Minion | A search result preview, broken link checks, bulk on-page checks, and location-based result simulation | Spot-check key landing pages weekly for correct meta tags and new broken links |
| Ahrefs SEO Toolbar | Domain Rating, backlinks, and organic traffic estimates for any page | Rank pages for refresh or archive by the traffic they already bring |
| A campaign URL builder, such as Google's Campaign URL Builder | UTM-tagged URLs | Tag newsletter and social links, so analytics separates email traffic from organic |
| Screaming Frog SEO Spider (desktop application) | A full crawl with technical issues | Understand the tool that drives technical audits, so you can direct the work |

Screaming Frog is a desktop application, not an extension. Managers do not need to run it, but they should know what its reports contain. The [SEO tools by role guide](/articles/seo-tools-by-role) covers the full platform stack beyond the browser.

## Manage extensions for speed and safety

Every active extension uses memory and processing power. Light tools, such as a keyword volume overlay, cost little. Toolbars that run constant background processes can slow the browser noticeably. Keep 8 to 12 extensions active at most. A browser with 30 or more loads pages slowly and crashes more often.

Use separate Chrome profiles by task. Create a "Technical SEO" profile with validators and rendering tools and a "Content" profile with grammar and keyword tools. Keep a light profile with no extensions for ordinary browsing. Disable extensions you use only occasionally instead of uninstalling them. A disabled extension costs nothing and stays ready.

Review permissions before you install. Many SEO extensions ask to "read and change all your data on all websites". That permission makes the page metrics possible, but it also lets an extension see login credentials, form entries, and business data in any tab.

Install extensions only from established SEO vendors, such as Moz, Ahrefs, and Semrush. Otherwise, choose publishers with a large user base and strong ratings. Read the reviews for complaints about malware or data collection. Reject any extension whose permissions go beyond its stated purpose. Keep sensitive work in a profile with no extensions at all.

Keep extensions updated through Chrome's extension manager. Updates carry security fixes, new features, and compatibility fixes for new Chrome versions.

Most popular SEO extensions also run in Firefox and Edge, which use similar extension systems. Safari has far fewer SEO extensions. Check each extension's listing for browser support before you switch browsers.

Agencies can use extensions on client sites, with two precautions. Extensions can inject code or change pages, which can distort a test. Start each audit in an Incognito window with extensions off, to see the site as an ordinary visitor does. Then enable only the extensions the diagnosis needs. When extension data appears in a client report, name the tool as the source.
