Before accepting a proposal, ask which pages and reports the auditor will inspect and what you receive afterward. Google recommends considering what an audit involves and granting only read access to Search Console during this stage. Its guidance says an audit should include realistic improvement estimates and an estimate of the work involved. Ask for enough detail to distinguish a diagnosis from a tool export. ## Define the question and boundaries Write the problem in ordinary language. Examples include a service page missing from search, a redesign followed by a traffic change, or visitors reaching a page without a working inquiry path. These are example briefs, not findings about your site. Specify the included website, page types, locations, and report dates. Identify private areas the auditor must exclude. Request a list of unavailable evidence before work starts. For a larger site, agree on a sampling method. Have the final report identify inspected URLs and explain what conclusions the sample supports. Avoid letting a homepage check stand in for a review of every template. ## Require evidence beside each finding A useful finding names the affected URL, observed behavior, source, inspection date, and proposed next step. Ask the auditor to label which view supports a finding. A current page may differ from the version represented in an earlier report. Preserve the inspected URL and dates with the observation. For search performance, require the source and filters. Keep a change in reported clicks separate from a claim about why those clicks changed. ## Price implementation as a separate decision Have the proposal identify whether repairs are included. Ask which tasks need owner input, a developer, hosting access, or approved new copy. Require the implementation estimate to refer back to the findings. Request a manageable repair order. Start with the work that prevents customers from using important pages or stops the intended content from being inspected. Have the auditor explain the priority in terms of your site.
