# Set up GA4, Search Console, and attribution so you can trace organic search from impression to revenue.

A marketing lead asks what organic search earned last quarter. The SEO manager can show impressions from Search Console and sessions from Google Analytics 4, but the two do not connect. The attribution model gives the credit to direct traffic, and the CRM holds the revenue. The answer comes back as "traffic went up."

SEO analytics connects search behavior to revenue. It follows organic search from the query impression to the conversion. The setup joins Google Search Console, Google Analytics 4 (GA4), an attribution approach, and supporting tools that fill gaps in the native platforms. This guide covers each layer in the order you build it.

## Lay the Search Console foundation

Search Console measures visibility before the click: the queries that show your pages, average position, and click-through rate. It is the only first-party source for what searchers see before they click.

Add both property types. A domain property (`example.com`) combines all protocols and subdomains, such as `www` and `blog`. A URL-prefix property (`https://www.example.com`) isolates one section when subdomains serve different purposes. Use the domain property for top-level reporting and URL-prefix properties for segment analysis.

Verify ownership with a DNS TXT record, not an HTML file or meta tag. DNS verification survives migrations and redesigns that can delete a verification file. Add the record at your registrar or DNS provider, such as Cloudflare. Verification usually completes within 24 hours.

Link Search Console to GA4 in the GA4 Admin settings. The link adds two reports to GA4: Google organic search queries and Google organic search traffic. They show query and landing page data next to GA4 engagement metrics. The Search Console dimensions work only in those linked reports, not in Explorations, so deeper joins need an export.

Set up Search Console API access for automated reports and alerts. The API feeds Google Sheets, Looker Studio, or a custom dashboard, and it can watch for sudden drops in position, impressions, or click-through rate. The [Search Console API guide for data teams](/articles/search-console-api-data-teams) walks through setup and scripts.

Two older settings no longer exist. Google removed the preferred domain setting (www or non-www) with the old Search Console in 2019. Set the preferred version with redirects and canonical tags. Google retired the International Targeting report, including country targeting, in September 2022. Check hreflang with a crawler such as Screaming Frog instead.

## Configure GA4

GA4 measures what users do after the click: engagement, key events, and revenue. Its event-based model replaced Universal Analytics' session-based model. Universal Analytics stopped processing data on July 1, 2023, and Google removed access to its data on July 1, 2024. GA4 is the only option.

Install the Google tag through Google Tag Manager, not directly in the HTML. Tag Manager gives version control, a preview mode for tests, and new tracking without a code deployment.

### Turn on enhanced measurement

Enhanced measurement adds events without custom setup: scrolls, outbound clicks, site search, video engagement, and file downloads. Review the defaults. The built-in scroll event fires only at 90% page depth. For 25%, 50%, and 75% thresholds, add a scroll depth trigger in Tag Manager.

### Add SEO-specific events

Create custom events for interactions that show content quality:

- internal link clicks, to measure how deep readers go;
- accordion or tab expansion, to measure engagement with long content;
- copies of code snippets or text, for developer content;
- share button clicks.

### Mark key events

Mark the actions that matter as key events. Google renamed GA4 "conversions" to "key events" in March 2024. B2B sites mark demo requests, whitepaper downloads, and email signups. E-commerce sites mark purchases, add-to-cart, and checkout starts. Search Console does not report conversions, so key event data lives in GA4.

For gated content, fire a key event from Tag Manager on each successful form submission. Search Console shows the queries and clicks to the gated landing page. GA4 shows the submissions. A join on the landing page URL gives the rate from query to gated content to submission.

### Track logged-in users and build audiences

Configure User-ID for logged-in users to follow behavior across devices. It improves returning-visitor attribution and lifetime value analysis. Push a non-identifying user ID to the data layer after sign-in, and respect your privacy policy and cookie consent.

Build audiences that segment organic traffic by behavior:

- first-time organic visitors;
- organic visitors who completed a key event;
- organic visitors who viewed 3 or more pages;
- blog readers who never reached a product page, which points to content gaps.

These audiences support remarketing and cohort analysis that compares organic behavior with paid and referral traffic.

## Choose an attribution approach

Last-click attribution gives all the credit to the final touchpoint. Compare credit across models for your observed paths. Last-click can reduce credit for discovery touchpoints. A buyer often discovers the brand through organic search, leaves to compare options, and returns through branded search or direct traffic to convert. Last-click credits the return visit, not the discovery.

GA4's current options are narrower than they once were. Data-driven attribution is the default. It uses machine learning to spread credit across touchpoints based on your conversion paths. Google removed the first-click, linear, time-decay, and position-based models from GA4 in 2023. Data-driven and last-click variants remain.

A position-based (U-shaped) model gives 40% of the credit to the first touch, 40% to the last, and splits the remaining 20% across the middle. It values both discovery, often organic, and conversion, often branded or direct. To use it now, export path data from GA4 to BigQuery and calculate it there. The [guide to SEO attribution models for marketing](/articles/seo-attribution-models-marketing) compares the models in depth.

Use **Advertising > Attribution > Attribution models** to compare data-driven and last-click results. Use **Advertising > Key events > Key event attribution paths** to see how often organic search appears earlier in paths that other channels close. Google’s current [Attribution models](https://support.google.com/analytics/answer/10596865?hl=en) and [Key event attribution paths](https://support.google.com/analytics/answer/10595568?hl=en) instructions were checked on 2026.10.02. When organic search assists far more conversions than it closes, for example more than twice as many, last-click undervalues its discovery role. Use that evidence against short-term return-on-ad-spend comparisons.

Set the lookback windows in the attribution settings. GA4 allows up to 90 days. B2B companies with longer sales cycles should use the maximum and carry the rest of the journey in the CRM. E-commerce sites can often use 30 to 60 days.

Tag every non-organic channel with consistent UTM parameters. Organic search arrives as `source=google` and `medium=organic` without tags, but paid search, email, and social need them. Missing or broken tags inflate direct traffic and blur attribution.

## Track landing page performance

Join GA4 landing page behavior with Search Console query data. The join shows which queries bring valuable traffic, not only impressions.

Build a GA4 exploration with landing page as the primary dimension. Add users, engagement rate, average engagement time, key events by event name, and total revenue for e-commerce. Filter to `Session default channel group = Organic Search`. Sort by key events or revenue to find the most valuable pages.

Low engagement on a high-traffic page suggests an intent mismatch or weak content. The [GA4 SEO reports guide](/articles/ga4-seo-reports-guide) has more report recipes.

Export the landing page data. Then pull the queries for each URL from Search Console through the API or a filtered export. Join on URL. The result shows query, landing page, engagement, and key event in one view.

Judge informational pages by engagement, not conversion. A blog post that answers a question may convert below 1% but hold readers for 3 minutes or more, which shows it meets the need.

Watch new pages separately. Create a segment for URLs that first appeared in the last 30 days. Track how fast each one gains organic traffic and reaches the typical engagement for its page type. Slow growth points to crawl or indexing problems or thin topical authority.

Set up custom insights in GA4 with email notification for sudden changes. Useful conditions:

- organic sessions to a landing page drop 30% or more week over week;
- engagement rate falls below half of its 30-day average;
- conversion rate drops 50% or more from baseline.

These catch ranking losses, technical faults, and content decay before the traffic loss grows.

## Monitor technical health

Analytics must connect to technical data to catch crawl errors, speed problems, and structured data faults.

Pull PageSpeed Insights API data into your dashboard. The API reports the Core Web Vitals: Largest Contentful Paint, Interaction to Next Paint (INP), and Cumulative Layout Shift. INP replaced First Input Delay as a Core Web Vital in March 2024. Check the top landing pages weekly and watch the trend, so you can fix a regression before rankings move.

Track the Search Console rich result and video indexing reports. Export the errors to track fixes over time, and compare fixes with rich result gains. Google retired the Mobile Usability report in December 2023.

Analyze server logs with Screaming Frog Log File Analyser or Botify. Logs show four things:

- crawl efficiency, the share of crawls that reach important pages;
- crawl waste on low-value pages;
- the mix of status codes, such as 404, 301, and 503;
- response time by page template.

A falling crawl rate on priority pages points to technical or architecture problems.

Add uptime monitoring with UptimeRobot or Pingdom. SEO crawlers cannot see an outage between their scheduled runs, and a long outage can lead to deindexing.

Check `robots.txt` and the XML sitemaps automatically. Confirm that both return status 200 and contain the expected content. A wrong `Disallow` rule or a deleted sitemap can wreck organic traffic, and a daily check catches the deployment error at once.

## Track rankings

Search Console reports query impressions and positions, but it anonymizes some queries, limits rows, and keeps only 16 months. Third-party rank trackers store longer history and check exact positions daily.

| Tool | Strength, as characterized when this article was first published (March 2026) |
|---|---|
| Semrush Position Tracking | Competitor comparison, daily checks, search feature tracking |
| Ahrefs Rank Tracker | International tracking, mobile and desktop segments |
| AccuRanker | On-demand updates; suits agencies with many clients |
| Search Console only | Free; fits small keyword sets that need no history beyond 16 months |

Load the target keywords from your research and group them four ways. Use branded and non-branded, product or service category, funnel stage, and intent. Track search features such as featured snippets, People Also Ask, local packs, and image packs separately. A first-place organic ranking under a competitor's featured snippet still loses the top of the page. The [rank tracking tools guide](/articles/rank-tracking-tools-guide) compares the options in more detail.

Record a baseline before each optimization. Note current positions, make the change, and track movement for 4 to 8 weeks. Keep a change log so you can tie ranking gains to specific changes.

Do not react to daily movement. Personalization and Google's continuous experiments cause normal swings of a few positions. Watch week-over-week and month-over-month trends. A sudden drop across many keywords points to an algorithm change or a technical fault.

## Connect SEO to revenue

Revenue attribution turns rankings and traffic into business measures: revenue, customer acquisition cost, and lifetime value.

On e-commerce sites, implement GA4's e-commerce events, such as `view_item_list`, `add_to_cart`, `begin_checkout`, and `purchase`. Track product list views and clicks by organic landing page, and add-to-cart rate by source. Also track checkout abandonment for organic visitors and revenue per session by channel. Estimate organic revenue as organic sessions × conversion rate × average order value. Track it monthly against SEO investment.

On B2B and lead generation sites, track cost per acquisition for organic leads. When sales cycles run for months, connect the GA4 client ID to the CRM lead record. When the deal closes, send the revenue back to GA4. Use the Measurement Protocol or a CRM integration such as HubSpot or Salesforce.

Without a CRM connection, assign a lead value from history. If 10% of demo requests close at an average contract value V, each demo request is worth 0.1 × V. Apply that value to the key event in GA4 to estimate organic revenue.

Build an SEO ROI dashboard with these panels:

- organic sessions, month over month;
- conversion rate trend;
- revenue attributed to organic search;
- SEO costs for tools, content, and technical work;
- ROI, from this formula:

```
ROI = (organic revenue - SEO costs) / SEO costs
```

Show ROI next to other marketing channels, and note that SEO needs a longer investment period before it pays back. The [SEO ROI calculation guide](/articles/seo-roi-calculation-guide) covers the cost side in detail.

To separate branded and non-branded traffic, mark branded queries in a Search Console export: company names, product names, and executive names. Then filter the GA4 landing page report to the pages those queries reach. That is an approximation, because GA4 does not receive the query for each organic session. For exact query splits, stay in Search Console.

Most SEO analytics needs only client-side GA4 through Tag Manager. Server-side tagging improves accuracy against ad blockers and browser restrictions, but it adds complexity. Consider it when a large share of your audience blocks trackers, for example above 30%. Also consider it when health or financial data must not reach a third-party analytics provider.
