# Turn your second brain into context an AI reads every session.

You have spent months on a second brain. The notes are organized, tagged, and linked. Your AI assistant has never read any of it.

When you ask ChatGPT for help with a project, you copy facts from your notes into the chat. The assistant lives in one app. The knowledge lives in another. You carry information between them by hand.

That is a filing cabinet with a transcription step. This article shows how to turn the useful part of your notes into context that an AI reads at the start of every session.

## Find the silo in your note system

Most note systems keep knowledge where an AI tool cannot load it on its own.

Notion stores notes in a proprietary database, so an assistant outside Notion needs an integration to reach them. Roam Research uses an outliner format that serves human thinking well, but many AI tools cannot read it directly. Apple Notes syncs through iCloud and gives an outside AI tool no file access. A [move from Apple Notes to Obsidian](/articles/move-apple-notes-to-obsidian-ai-memory) turns those notes into Markdown files with a receipt for each note.

Exports do not solve the problem. A PDF or text export must be uploaded by hand. An attachment in a chat lasts only for that conversation. In the next chat, you start over.

A second brain that an AI can use needs three properties:

1. Plain text files that the AI can read.
2. Files that load at the start of each session.
3. Context that persists after a conversation ends.

An Obsidian vault with Claude Code has all three. Other file-based setups can work the same way. For how to structure a vault for agent use, see [Obsidian as business memory for AI agents](/articles/obsidian-ai-memory-for-business).

## See how the vault becomes context

Obsidian is not a database. It is a file browser that renders Markdown. Each note is a `.md` file in a folder on your computer.

Claude Code reads local files. When a session starts, it loads the `CLAUDE.md` file at the root of the vault. That file tells Claude Code three things:

- who you are;
- your current work;
- where to find more context, as paths to other notes.

The notes stop being reference material that you consult. They become context that the assistant starts with.

## Rewrite shorthand as complete context

Notes for yourself use shorthand. You write incomplete sentences because you hold the rest in your head.

"Follow up with Dana re: proposal."

You know who Dana is and which proposal it was. The note is a trigger, not complete information. An AI model has no memory to fill the gap.

The same note, rewritten as context:

```text
Dana Lee (dana@example.com), owner of a landscaping company (client).
Sent website redesign proposal on 2026-01-15.
Follow up on 2026-01-22 if no response.
Proposal scope: new homepage, services page, contact form.
Quote and terms: proposals/2026-01-15-lee-website.md
Decision maker: Dana (owner). Timeline: 6 weeks from approval.
```

Now the assistant knows five things:

- who Dana is, with full name, email, and company;
- what the proposal includes;
- when to follow up;
- where the quote and timeline live;
- who decides.

The quote itself stays in the proposal file. The context entry points to it. A figure that lives in one place cannot drift between two copies.

Use a short checklist for each entry. Name the person or thing in full. State the status and the date. Name the next action. Point to the source record. Remove private asides that the assistant does not need.

## Separate context files from ordinary notes

Not every note needs to become AI context. A daily journal, random ideas, and book highlights can stay human-only.

Context files are different. They hold structured information that the assistant loads. Keep them apart with names:

- `CLAUDE.md`: master instructions for the assistant.
- `_context.md`: context for one domain, such as clients or services.
- Everything else: ordinary notes for you.

The root file routes each request to the right `_context.md` file or client note. It does not load your journal. Each task should read only what it needs; for that discipline, see [what context an agent should read](/articles/what-context-should-an-agent-read).

## Build the vault in four steps

### Step 1: audit your notes

Open your current note app. Ask one question: what do I explain to AI again and again?

The usual answers are these:

- client names and details;
- project specifications and deadlines;
- pricing and service packages;
- brand voice rules;
- your tech stack and tools.

Collect those notes in one document. That is your seed content.

### Step 2: move the seed content to Obsidian

Download Obsidian, which is free, and create a new vault. Give it a plain name, such as "Business" or "Work."

Copy the seed content into notes, one note per item. Four clients become four notes: `ClientA.md`, `ClientB.md`, `ClientC.md`, and `ClientD.md`. Three service types become three notes: `ContentWriting.md`, `SEO.md`, and `WebDesign.md`.

Do not organize yet. Get the content into plain Markdown files first. Then rewrite each note with the checklist above.

### Step 3: write CLAUDE.md

This master file tells Claude Code who you are and what to load. A basic version:

```
## WHO
[Your name]. I run [business]. [Number] retainer clients.
## WHAT
I write content briefs, articles, and topical maps for local service businesses.
## VOICE
Direct. No fluff. Use contractions. Vary sentence length.
## CONTEXT ROUTING
| Keyword | Load File |
| "ClientA" | /Clients/ClientA.md |
| "ClientB" | /Clients/ClientB.md |
| "ClientC" | /Clients/ClientC.md |
| "ClientD" | /Clients/ClientD.md |
```

When you type "help me write a blog post for ClientA," the word "ClientA" matches the routing table, and Claude Code opens `ClientA.md`. You do not paste the client brief.

The routing table is an instruction that the model follows. Test it before you rely on it. For a field-by-field packet format, see the [AI context manifest template](/articles/ai-context-manifest-template).

### Step 4: test the system

Open Claude Code and ask: "What clients do I work with?"

If Claude Code lists the four clients by name, the setup works. If it says it does not have that information, check two things. Confirm that `CLAUDE.md` sits in the vault root. Confirm that each path in the routing table is correct, including capitalization.

Then ask one question per client that only its note can answer. A correct answer proves that the route loads the note.

## Know what the setup gives you

**Client-aware content.** A request for a blog post uses the client's voice, terms, and keywords without a briefing.

**Project-aware code.** A request for a website feature uses your actual stack, not generic examples.

**Context-aware messages.** A draft email names real projects and actual deadlines, because the assistant reads your project notes.

**Continuity across sessions.** You start a project on Monday and pick it up on Thursday. The assistant starts from the same files, because the files did not change. For more on ending the repeated explanation, read [stop re-explaining your business to AI](/articles/stop-re-explaining-your-business-to-ai).

## Compare files with uploaded documents

ChatGPT accepts uploaded PDFs and text files, and Claude accepts attachments in a conversation. An attachment is temporary context. When the conversation ends, the attachment does not carry into the next chat. If you forget to upload it again, the assistant does not have it.

File-based context loads at the start of every session. The routing table decides which files a request needs, based on the words in your prompt. A carried bag of groceries lasts one trip. A stocked pantry is there every time you open the door.

## Update the files when the business changes

A second brain for AI does not need daily upkeep. When something changes, update the relevant file. A new client gets a note and a routing row. A finished project moves to an archive folder. A change to your service packages goes into the services note.

The next session reads the new version. There is no sync step and no refresh.

Each update takes a few minutes. Compare that with an explanation of your business at the start of every chat. Assign each file an owner and a date line, so that a stale note is easy to spot.
