# Match each page to its search intent so the content you write can rank and convert.

A content strategist commissions a 3,000-word guide for a query that people want answered in two paragraphs. Another team builds a product comparison page for a purely informational query, and a third targets a transactional search with a blog post. In each case the writing is good and the keyword is right. Google still ranks the page on page 3 or lower, because the format does not match what the searcher wants.

Search intent is the goal behind a query, and it decides which content types rank. A person who searches "best running shoes" wants a comparison with product recommendations, not a history of shoe manufacturing. A person who searches "how to tie running shoes" wants steps with pictures, not a product page.

Google's results show formats that match intent patterns. How-to queries get tutorials, and purchase queries get product pages. "Best" queries get comparison articles, and "what is" queries get definitions. This guide covers the four intent categories and how to read intent from the results page. It then gives the content format for each intent, an audit for mismatches, and a map from intent to funnel stage. For a shorter introduction to the concept, see [search intent explained](/articles/search-intent-explained).

## Learn the four intent categories

| Intent | Searcher's goal | Typical query patterns | Formats that rank | Conversion |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Informational | Learn or research, with no purchase planned now | "What is [topic]?", "How does [thing] work?", "[term] meaning", "guide to [topic]" | Articles, how-to guides, explainer videos, infographics, glossary entries | Low right away |
| Navigational | Reach a specific site, brand, or page | "[Brand] login", "[Company] support", "[Brand] pricing", "Gmail" | Official homepages, login pages, the specific page sought | High if the page is transactional; low for support pages |
| Commercial investigation | Research options before a purchase | "[A] vs [B]", "best [category]", "[product] review", "[product] alternatives", "[service] cost" | Comparison articles, review roundups, single reviews, alternatives pages, pricing guides, case studies | Medium to high |
| Transactional | Complete an action: buy, sign up, download, book | "buy [product]", "[service] near me", "download [software]", "[brand] [model] [size]" | Product pages, service landing pages, signup and pricing pages, local listings | Highest |

### Informational

Example queries: "What is schema markup?", "How does the Google ranking algorithm work?", "Why is page speed important for SEO?"

These searchers are in the awareness stage. They are learning, not buying. Measure success with time on page, pages per session, email signups, and shares. Then move readers toward a later conversion with email sequences or retargeting.

### Navigational

Example queries: "Ahrefs login", "Semrush pricing", "Google Search Console".

If you do not own the brand in the query, you rarely rank for it. Focus on branded queries for your own products, and cover the misspellings and variants people type.

### Commercial investigation

Example queries: "Ahrefs vs Semrush", "best email marketing software for small business", "HubSpot alternatives", "Notion pricing".

These searchers are comparing options. They sign up for trials, request demos, and buy. Give them clear calls to action and a reason to leave an email. State clearly where your product fits.

### Transactional

Example queries: "buy running shoes online", "CRM software free trial", "hire SEO consultant", "plumber near me".

These searchers are ready to act. The landing page must make the action easy. Give it a clear value statement, trust signals such as reviews, a short form, and a visible call to action.

## Read intent from the results page

The search results are the most reliable guide to intent, because they show what Google already rewards. Follow these steps for each target keyword:

1. Search the keyword in a private browser window to reduce personalization.
2. Note the dominant format in the top 10 results.
3. Note the search features on the page.
4. Note the depth of the ranking content.

Read the format like this:

- Mostly articles: informational intent.
- Mostly product or service pages: transactional intent.
- Mostly comparisons or roundups: commercial investigation.
- Mostly one brand's pages: navigational intent.

Read the search features like this:

| Feature | Intent it suggests |
|---|---|
| Featured snippet | Informational, usually a definition or how-to |
| Shopping results | Transactional |
| Local pack | Transactional with local intent |
| People Also Ask | Informational |
| Video carousel | Informational how-to, or commercial product reviews |

Read depth like this:

- Long guides over 2,000 words: deep informational intent.
- Short direct answers under 500 words: a quick informational need.
- Product-focused pages with prices and calls to action: transactional intent.

A worked example: search "best email marketing software". The top results are comparison articles from sites such as HubSpot, G2, and Forbes. The page shows no featured snippet and no shopping ads. The intent is commercial investigation: people want a curated list that compares tools.

### Use modifiers and query length as secondary signals

Modifiers in the query point to intent:

- Informational: "how to", "what is", "why does", "guide to", "tutorial", "tips", "examples".
- Commercial: "best", "top", "vs", "comparison", "alternative", "review", "pricing".
- Transactional: "buy", "purchase", "for sale", "discount", "deal", "near me", "hire", "download".

The word "SEO" alone is ambiguous. "What is SEO" is informational, "best SEO tools" is commercial, and "buy SEO services" is transactional.

Query length also correlates with intent. Queries of 1 to 2 words, such as "SEO" or "shoes", are often navigational or broad, with unclear intent. Queries of 3 to 4 words, such as "SEO best practices", are clearer and often informational or commercial. Long-tail queries of 5 or more words are very specific. "How to optimize meta descriptions for SEO" is informational; "buy Nike Air Max 90 white size 10" is transactional.

### Handle mixed and unclear results

When the top 10 mixes intents, follow the dominant format. If 7 of 10 results for "best CRM" are comparison articles and 3 are product pages, write a comparison article. If one of the products is yours, include it in the comparison.

Sometimes the results are evenly mixed, and no format dominates. Build the content type you can make best, watch its rankings, and change course if it does not work.

## Build the format each intent needs

### Informational intent: educational content

Four formats work:

- Complete guides of 3,000 words or more, for example "Guide to technical SEO".
- How-to tutorials with screenshots or video, for example "How to set up Google Analytics 4".
- Explainers, for example "What is crawl budget and why it affects large sites".
- List articles, for example "10 ways to improve page speed".

Structure the page this way:

1. An H1 that states the question the page answers.
2. A direct answer of 40 to 60 words near the top, which can win a featured snippet.
3. A body with H2 and H3 subheadings, examples, visuals, and data.
4. A close that points to related content or an email signup, not an aggressive product pitch.

Link internally to related informational and commercial pages. FAQ markup no longer earns expanded results for most sites. Since August 2023, Google shows FAQ rich results only for well-known government and health websites. Answer common questions in the body instead. The [featured snippet optimization guide](/articles/featured-snippet-optimization) covers the answer block in detail.

### Commercial investigation: comparison and review content

Four formats work:

- Head-to-head comparisons with feature tables and pros and cons, for example "Ahrefs vs Semrush: which tool fits your team?".
- Roundups, for example "10 best SEO tools for agencies".
- Alternatives pages, for example "[Competitor] alternatives: 5 options to consider".
- Buying guides, for example "How to choose CRM software for your business".

Structure the page this way:

1. An H1 with a clear comparison or list promise.
2. An introduction that names who the comparison helps and the criteria used.
3. One section per product with an overview, key features, pricing, pros and cons, and the best-fit customer.
4. A comparison table with the feature matrix.
5. A recommendation for each scenario.
6. Links to the products, or to free trials.

Show pricing information clearly, because these readers evaluate cost. State the author's credentials or experience to build trust. Add Product markup where it applies, and link to your transactional landing pages.

### Transactional intent: conversion pages

Three formats work:

- Product pages with images, descriptions, reviews, and an add-to-cart button.
- Service landing pages with a clear value proposition, benefits, pricing, and a signup form.
- Pricing pages with transparent tiers, a feature comparison, and trial options.

Structure the page from top to bottom:

1. A hero section with a clear headline, a benefit subheadline, and the primary call to action.
2. Social proof: customer reviews, client logos, and ratings.
3. Features and benefits that show how the product solves the problem.
4. Transparent pricing, unless the product is enterprise B2B and truly needs a sales conversation.
5. Answers to objections and common questions.
6. The call to action again, after the features and at the end.

Keep the page fast, because a transactional page cannot afford a slow load. Make it work well on mobile, where a large share of transactional searches happen. Add Product markup with price and availability. Show trust signals such as security badges, guarantees, and return policies. Keep friction low with short forms and guest checkout.

## Audit your site for intent mismatches

Follow these steps:

1. Export the top 100 keywords your site ranks for, from Google Search Console or an SEO platform.
2. Classify each keyword as informational, commercial, or transactional.
3. Open the page that ranks for each keyword.
4. Mark each mismatch.
5. Rank the fixes by search volume and current position.

Three mismatches are common. An informational query ranks on a product page, and it needs an article. A commercial query ranks on a blog post with no comparison, and it needs comparison content. A transactional query ranks on an informational guide, and it needs a landing page.

High-volume keywords in positions 5 to 15 are the best opportunities: an intent fix can move them into the top 3. Low-volume keywords below position 20 can wait.

Example: the keyword "best project management software" ranks on the product page for your project management tool. The intent is commercial investigation, so searchers want a comparison. Create a comparison article that reviews your tool and its competitors, and link it to your product page.

Choose between an update and a new page by position. If the current page ranks in the top 5 and the mismatch is slight, expand it. Sometimes it sits on page 3 or lower, or the intent is completely wrong. In that case, create a new page for the correct intent. Then redirect the old page or add `noindex` to it.

Intent for a keyword rarely changes, but Google's reading of it can shift. Review the top-ranked pages for your key terms once a quarter. If the dominant format changed, adjust your content.

## Map intent to the funnel

| Funnel stage | Intent | Content | Goal | Example query |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Top: awareness | Informational | Guides, explainers, glossaries | Traffic, brand awareness, email signups | "What is CRM software?" |
| Middle: consideration | Commercial investigation | Comparisons, reviews, case studies | A strong position for your product; trials and demos | "Best CRM software for small business" |
| Bottom: decision | Transactional | Product pages, pricing pages, trial signups | Conversions and revenue | "Buy HubSpot CRM" |

Cover all three stages. Top-of-funnel content brings volume; bottom-of-funnel content converts. Internal links carry readers down the funnel from one stage to the next.

One page can sometimes serve two intents. A "running shoes" query can rank category pages that are transactional but also carry a buying guide and reviews. In most cases, though, a page that tries to serve many intents serves none of them well. Build one page per intent and link them together.

To put this into a production process, add the intent and target format to every brief. The [SEO content brief template](/articles/content-brief-template-seo) has a field for each, and the [keyword research process guide](/articles/keyword-research-process-guide) shows where intent classification fits in the research.
