List its actual variants and compare their submitted product IDs, group IDs, and distinguishing attributes. Keep related accessories outside the family unless they are genuine variants. Google uses `item_group_id` to group variants. Its guidance calls for a distinct product ID for each item and the same group ID across variants of that product. It does not establish how an uninspected family will appear in search. ## Define the family from the catalog Ask the catalog owner which options belong to the same product. Record the differences between them. Keep a different design or separate accessory identified as its own product when appropriate. Choose the complete family for the investigation. Include the variants that appear incorrectly and another that appears as expected. Keep their supplier or catalog references with the worksheet. Resolve an unclear relationship before assigning group values. Avoid grouping every product in a collection because the store sells them together or gives them similar names. ## Keep product identity and group identity separate Prepare this comparison for each actual variant: | Field | What to compare | | --- | --- | | Product ID | Unique submitted identity of that variant | | Item group ID | Shared identity of the product family | | Group title | Consistent approved family name | | Variant properties | The options distinguishing the individual item | | Landing page | Address and initial selected variant | | Publishing source | Catalog field and integration mapping | Google advises keeping group IDs stable and not reusing them for different products. Ask the maintainer to identify any transformation applied during export. Keep the store's source value beside the value received by Merchant Center. ## Review the current variant fields together Google's current specification includes `item_group_title` and `variant_option` alongside `item_group_id`. Have the maintainer check the current specification against your product category and integration. Require a complete mapping rather than treating one shared field as the entire implementation. Use the catalog's approved names for options. If the website and feed use different labels, document the disagreement. Avoid replacing precise product wording with a guess to make records look alike. ## Align grouping with the website selection Google's guidance calls for grouping that matches the landing-page experience. It also recommends distinct submitted addresses for variants, using a different path or selection parameters. Confirm the displayed image and option labels identify the intended item. Then change the option and check that the selection remains understandable. Give the developer exact failed addresses. Keep a broken selection link separate from an incorrect catalog grouping, even when both affect the same family. ## Accept the mapping before watching search display After the approved repair, inspect the received product records again. Require unique item identities, consistent group values, and correct option details. Repeat the public-link checks. Keep the later search display as a separate observation.
