Ask the manufacturer or supplier for the assigned identifier. Keep an unanswered lookup separate from evidence that no identifier exists. Google defines a GTIN as a Global Trade Item Number. Its specification says to submit one only when you know it is correct. It explicitly warns against guessing or inventing a value. The worksheet does not determine the correct identifier for a product you have not checked. ## Match the product and variant first Copy the affected item identifier, submitted product link, brand wording, and current GTIN field. Record the selected size, color, model, or package configuration where relevant. Compare that record with the product the store sells. Ask the supplier for documentation matching the same version. Do not accept a similar-looking product page as the only evidence. Google instructs merchants to use the correct GTIN for each product and variant. If the supplier returns several numbers, ask which one belongs to the affected configuration. Keep the answer with the item record so the next catalog update uses the same source. ## Keep internal stock codes separate Create separate worksheet columns for your store's item code and the manufacturer-supplied identifier. Avoid copying a warehouse reference into the GTIN field to make it nonempty. Use these proposed fields: | Field | Evidence to retain | | --- | --- | | Store item | Internal reference and exact landing page | | Product configuration | Model, size, color, and package contents | | Assigned GTIN | Confirmed value and manufacturer or supplier source | | Other identifiers | Current brand and manufacturer part-number evidence | | Unknown details | Specific question awaiting an answer | | Publishing source | Catalog or integration responsible for the submitted value | Treat a missing supplier response as an open task. Avoid presenting an invented number as a temporary fix. ## Use identifier-exists only for the supported situation Google's `identifier_exists` attribute describes products without available unique product identifiers. Its guidance says to use `no` or `false` only when you are certain no identifiers have been assigned. Incorrectly declaring that identifiers do not exist can produce a warning. An empty import column or an unanswered supplier email should remain an investigation item. For a handmade or one-of-a-kind item, ask the person responsible for that product to confirm its identifier situation. Keep the supporting record with the product. Avoid applying one product's exception to every item in a collection. ## Repair the value where the feed gets it Ask the maintainer to trace the submitted value back to its source. Compare the catalog record, integration mapping, and actual product data received by Merchant Center. Request a correction that names the affected item, verified replacement, source field, and responsible person. Recheck the submitted record after the next agreed update. Keep evidence that the integration preserved the confirmed value. If the visible website and product data identify different variants, resolve that mismatch as a separate defect. A correct identifier should describe the item reached from its submitted link. ## Finish with a repeatable catalog check Inspect another affected variant before applying the same mapping elsewhere. Keep unknown identifiers visibly unresolved. Record the account's later status without promising approval or increased sales.
