# Prioritize product features that create pages people find through search.

A product team ships a notification settings panel, an export option, and a new collaboration view in one quarter. Retention improves. Organic traffic does not move, because none of the three features created a single page that search engines can index. A competitor shipped a public template gallery the same quarter and now ranks for hundreds of "[type] template" searches.

Product managers usually rank features by user value, technical feasibility, and revenue. Search potential rarely enters the model. Product-led SEO treats the product itself as the main SEO asset. Instead of adding blog content around the product, you build features that create useful, indexable pages as a side effect of use.

Zillow's listings, Yelp's business reviews, and Pinterest's pins follow this pattern. Their core products create millions of distinct, useful pages that search engines show. They did not add an SEO plan to the product; the product architecture was the plan.

## Know why roadmaps miss search value

**Inward-facing features.** Teams build what active users request: collaboration tools, notification settings, export options. These help retention but create no new pages that outsiders can find.

**Short planning horizons.** Sprint planning favors commitments and quarterly goals. SEO pays off in three to six months, so it loses to features with immediate activation or revenue effects.

**SEO filed under marketing.** Product teams see SEO as blog posts, links, and meta tags. They miss that product decisions, such as URL structure, page templates, and user-generated content policy, often move organic traffic more than any marketing tactic.

**Underestimated engineering.** Search-ready features need server-side rendering for JavaScript frameworks, automated sitemaps for large page counts, and structured data. Teams without SEO expertise scope this poorly, and the work gets labeled "too hard".

**Split metrics.** Product measures activation, retention, and engagement. Marketing measures traffic and rankings. Nobody owns "organic visitors who become active users", so search-ready features get no credit for the growth they bring. The [guide to measuring SEO by activation and retention](/articles/pm-seo-impact-activation-retention) closes that gap.

## Ask five questions about each feature

**Does it create unique, indexable pages?** User profiles, project pages, collections, and directory listings each create a searchable page. A "create project" feature that produces `yourapp.com/projects/[unique-id]` with rich metadata can earn traffic as users share projects and search engines index them.

**Does it match search intent?** People search for solutions ("how to create Gantt charts"), comparisons ("Asana vs Monday"), and outcomes ("project timeline template"). A template gallery with one page per template targets "free [template type]" queries.

**Does it invite user-generated content?** Reviews, comments, questions and answers, portfolios, and listings scale content beyond your team. Stack Overflow, Reddit, and Quora rank widely because users cover the long tail.

**Does it get shared?** Pages that users share in social posts, Slack, and email collect links and referral traffic. Embeddable widgets, public links, and good social previews spread the product across the web.

**Does it build topic clusters?** Features that create related pages, such as course pages that link to related courses, build topical depth. Search engines reward coverage across a subject, not isolated pages.

### Score features on five dimensions

Rate each dimension from 0 to 10:

| Dimension | 10 | 5 | 0 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Discoverability: will the pages rank for valuable queries? | High-volume queries with low competition | Niche queries or moderate competition | No match with search intent |
| Scale: how many indexable pages? | 10,000 or more | 100 to 1,000 | Fewer than 10 |
| Durability: how long does the content stay relevant? | Permanently, such as "how to calculate ROI" | Several years, such as trend analysis | Briefly, such as event listings that expire |
| Quality: how useful is each page? | Complete, original, solves the problem | Adequate | Thin, duplicate, or low value |
| Conversion: will visitors convert? | Transactional queries, such as "buy X" | Research queries with some intent | Informational queries with no purchase intent |

Add the scores for a total out of 50. A feature that scores 35 or more deserves priority for its search value. Below 20, organic growth value is limited. To combine this score with reach, impact, confidence, and effort, use the method in the [RICE scoring guide for SEO](/articles/rice-scoring-seo-prioritization).

## Use proven page patterns

### Public profiles

Publicly indexable user, creator, or company pages. Each profile can rank for "[name] + [role or category]" searches. LinkedIn, Behance, and GitHub use this pattern at scale.

- Generate a unique title and description for each profile.
- Add `Person` or `Organization` structured data.
- Offer readable URLs, such as `/u/username` instead of `/u/12345`.
- Show the user's bio, portfolio, or work samples.

### Marketplaces and directories

Searchable databases of items, services, places, or resources, with one page per listing. Zillow's properties, Yelp's businesses, and Product Hunt's products follow this pattern.

- Give each listing unique content: descriptions, reviews, and specifications.
- Build filters by category, price, or location, and decide which filter URLs deserve indexing.
- Add `Product`, `LocalBusiness`, or `Place` structured data.

### Template and resource libraries

Pre-built templates, tools, guides, or starter kits. Each template page targets "[type] template" searches. Canva, Notion, and Figma capture design and productivity traffic this way.

- Build a rich preview page with a description, use cases, and creator credit.
- Add filtering and categories.
- Include a clear "use this template" call to action.
- Optimize preview images for image search.

### User-curated collections

Playlists, wishlists, reading lists, and boards that users publish. Each collection is a unique page. Pinterest built a large public company on this pattern.

- Make collections shareable at readable URLs.
- Generate titles and descriptions from the collection's contents.
- Link each item in the collection to its own page.

### Knowledge bases and documentation

Help centers, tutorials, and how-to guides target "how to [task]" searches. Notion's template gallery and HubSpot's blog and academy earn large organic traffic this way.

- Structure documentation as a hierarchy with internal links.
- Target each article at one specific query.
- Include code samples, screenshots, or video.
- Skip FAQ markup for rich results. Since August 2023, Google shows FAQ rich results only for well-known, authoritative government and health sites.

### Community forums and Q&A

Every question is a long-tail query, and every answer is content. Stack Overflow, Reddit, and Quora rank for millions of queries this way.

- Give every thread a unique, indexable URL.
- Encourage question titles that match how people search.
- Show answers in the page, not behind "view more" clicks.
- Add reputation signals so quality answers stand out.

## Build the technical base for discoverability

**Server-side rendering.** Single-page apps in React, Vue, or Angular often build content in the browser, which can delay indexing. Use server-side rendering (SSR) or static site generation (SSG) so crawlers receive complete HTML. The [server-side rendering guide](/articles/server-side-rendering-seo) compares the options.

**Generated sitemaps.** Large sites need sitemaps that update as content publishes. One sitemap file holds at most 50,000 URLs or 50 MB uncompressed; split larger sets with a sitemap index. The [XML sitemap guide for developers](/articles/xml-sitemap-best-practices-developers) covers generation.

**Template-driven structured data.** Nobody hand-writes markup for a million pages. Fill structured data from page content in the template. Validate each template with Google's Rich Results Test before you deploy it site-wide.

**Automated internal links.** Build related-page modules that link to similar items, categories, and profiles. They spread PageRank and help crawlers reach deep pages.

**Canonical URLs.** For features that create near-duplicate views, such as filtered lists and pagination, set canonical URLs. Google does not penalize duplicates as such, but it picks one version to show, and your canonical tells it which one you prefer.

**Pagination.** Use crawlable paginated URLs or a "view all" page. Google stopped using `rel="next"` and `rel="prev"` as an indexing signal in 2019, so plain links between pages do the work. Do not rely on infinite scroll alone.

**Mobile rendering.** Google indexes the mobile version of each page. Test navigation, forms, and interactive elements on small screens.

## Learn from products built this way

- **Zillow.** Every property has its own page that matches address searches. Neighborhood data, mortgage calculators, and school ratings add more indexable content around each listing.
- **Pinterest.** Pins create billions of pages for visual searches, and boards and profiles add more layers. The product architecture is the SEO strategy.
- **Notion.** Public pages and templates let users publish their work. Each shared page shows a use case and feeds "Notion for [use case]" searches.
- **Stack Overflow.** Each question is a long-tail query and each answer is optimized content. Contributors cover obscure programming problems no documentation addresses.
- **Medium.** Writer profiles and publications form topic clusters. The platform's authority lifts each post, and each post adds to the platform.

## Build SEO into how the product team works

**Add SEO to requirement documents.** Each product requirements document should answer three questions: Will this feature create indexable pages? Which queries will those pages target? How many pages will it create?

**Invite SEO into roadmap planning.** An in-house or fractional SEO lead in quarterly planning can spot the features that unlock organic growth. The [SEO guide for product managers](/articles/seo-for-product-managers) covers how to run that partnership.

**Share goals.** Set objectives such as "Reach 50,000 monthly organic visits to new feature pages" or "Ship three search-ready features this quarter".

**Reserve engineering time.** Allocate about 10 to 15 percent of engineering capacity to SEO infrastructure: rendering, sitemaps, structured data, and page speed. Treat SEO debt like any other technical debt.

**Track and iterate.** After launch, watch traffic, rankings, and conversions for the feature's pages. Adjust templates, metadata, and structure based on results.

## Avoid the common pitfalls

- **Content behind logins.** Search engines cannot index pages that need a login. Make core feature content public, or offer public previews. Notion's shared pages are public; many competitors hide everything.
- **Thin pages at scale.** Since March 2024, Google's scaled content abuse policy targets large volumes of low-value pages. Give every generated page unique, useful content, not a template with one word changed.
- **Slow feature pages.** Video, animation, and heavy JavaScript slow the page. Balance richness against Core Web Vitals.
- **Broken mobile layouts.** A feature that works on desktop and breaks on phones loses users and rankings.
- **Stale content.** Abandoned profiles, dead listings, and outdated templates lower perceived quality. Archive or refresh old pages on a schedule.

## Make the case to leadership

**Priority over user requests.** Present search-ready features as customer acquisition infrastructure. Project organic traffic and the acquisition cost it saves. Compare the lifetime value of organic users with paid users, and point to competitors that grew this way.

**Paid products.** A paid product can use this pattern through a free tier or public previews. Offer limited free access that creates indexable pages, such as free templates, public profiles, or limited listings. Sell the paid features. You can also build free tools or resources that target nearby queries.

**Timeline.** Expect three to six months for first traction and 12 to 18 months for scale. Features compound as users create more pages and those pages gain authority.

**Features that do not convert directly.** Such a feature still earns its place when it brings qualified visitors into the funnel. Email, retargeting, and in-product prompts can convert them later.

**Tracking.** Track organic traffic to feature pages and the number of indexable pages created. Also track rankings for target keywords, organic conversion rate, and links earned by shared content. Track feature adoption too: if users do not create content, the feature creates no search value.
