# How to Preserve Context From AI Design Sessions: Decisions, Constraints, and Handoff.

A designer resumes a project in a new AI tool. The model produces a polished concept that violates the keyboard-access requirement rejected two sessions earlier. The image looks finished, so the old failure reaches stakeholder review again.

The missing artifact is not a longer transcript. It is a design handoff that states the problem, constraints, current direction, rejected alternatives, source assets, open questions, and next test.

Preserve the decisions that shape the next move. Keep session notes as evidence, then give the replacement tool a smaller governing packet.

## Preserve decisions, not the full conversational trail

Design chats contain exploration. That includes incomplete ideas, contradictory feedback, temporary placeholders, and prompts that were useful once. Replaying the whole trail makes the next model infer which turn won.

Promote only the state needed for continuation:

- problem and intended users;
- required outcomes;
- accessibility and platform constraints;
- approved direction and approval source;
- rejected alternatives and reasons;
- current assets and versions;
- unresolved questions;
- next visual or usability test.

Keep the transcript or chat export as evidence when policy permits. Do not put it first in source order.

The [brief-versus-prompt guide](/articles/brief-vs-prompt) explains why the durable job definition should survive the runtime conversation.

## Separate the design brief from session notes

The design brief defines the job. A session note records what happened during one attempt. A handoff states the accepted current position.

Use separate files when they have different owners or review cycles:

- `design-brief.md`: audience, problem, outcomes, constraints, deliverables;
- `sessions/YYYY.MM.DD.md`: prompts, observations, alternatives, feedback;
- `design-decisions.md`: accepted and rejected decisions with reasons;
- `design-session-handoff.md`: compact current packet for the next session;
- `tests/`: screenshots, test scripts, results, and receipts.

Do not let a later session note silently rewrite the approved brief. If the business goal or accessibility requirement changes, record a new decision with an owner and effective date.

## Record constraints and rejected alternatives

A constraint should be testable. "Accessible" is an intention. "All controls work with keyboard input and visible focus" can be exercised.

W3C describes WCAG 2.2 success criteria as testable statements that are technology-independent. It also states that accessibility evaluation can combine automated testing with human evaluation. [W3C: WCAG 2.2](https://www.w3.org/TR/WCAG22/)

Translate the relevant requirements into the project's acceptance list. Do not claim full WCAG conformance from a screenshot or one automated scan.

Rejected alternatives need reasons. Record whether a direction failed because of contrast, keyboard use, reading order, brand fit, engineering cost, stakeholder choice, or missing evidence. "Did not like it" will not help the next designer distinguish a hard constraint from a preference.

The [AI context manifest template](/articles/ai-context-manifest-template) can define which design files are canonical, reference-only, or excluded.

## Inspect `design-session-handoff.md`

```markdown
# Design session handoff
project:: customer intake form
brief:: design-brief.md
approved_direction:: DEC-018 compact single-column form
approval_source:: feedback/2026.08.24-owner.md
## Users and job
Mobile owner-operators submitting a seven-field intake in under four minutes.
## Hard constraints
- Keyboard-operable controls with visible focus.
- Labels remain visible after entry.
- Error text identifies the field and recovery step.
- Existing API field names cannot change in this phase.
## Rejected
- ALT-006 multi-column desktop layout: reading order failed at narrow width.
- ALT-009 placeholder-only labels: label disappeared after input.
## Assets
- wireframes/intake-v5.fig | hash: 6d3...
- screenshots/mobile-320-v5.png | approved reference
## Open questions
- Confirm whether optional phone field may move after email.
## Next test
Run keyboard, 320-pixel viewport, error recovery, and screen-reader label checks.
```

The handoff points to assets instead of embedding stale copies. Use stable asset IDs or hashes when filenames can remain unchanged while contents change.

## Link assets and source evidence

For each asset, record its tool, native file ID, exported fallback, version, owner, and permitted use. A PNG proves appearance at one state. It does not preserve components, constraints, tokens, or interaction details.

Keep a portable fallback when possible:

- exported SVG or PNG for visual reference;
- text design tokens;
- component inventory;
- annotated interaction notes;
- content strings and error messages;
- acceptance criteria;
- source link and access owner.

Do not assume the next model can open a proprietary link. Test access from the replacement environment before the original session closes.

## Hand the file to a second model

Start a clean session in another approved tool. Provide the brief, handoff, current assets, and test list. Do not provide the original chat unless the new session identifies a specific evidence gap.

Run these tests:

1. Ask the model to restate the approved direction and hard constraints.
2. Ask why ALT-006 and ALT-009 were rejected.
3. Request one new concept that respects every hard constraint.
4. Insert an old screenshot that conflicts with the approved direction.
5. Remove the approval source and rerun.
6. Ask the model to change an API field name.
7. Ask for the exact next test and required evidence.

Pass requires the model to follow the handoff, label the old screenshot as conflicting evidence, stop when approval is missing, and preserve the fixed API names.

The [model-switching guide](/articles/switch-ai-models-without-losing-context) extends this replacement test to the wider business-memory system.

## Test whether the next concept respects the record

Evaluate the artifact, not the explanation. A model can repeat every constraint and still violate one in the output.

Inspect the concept at required viewports. Exercise keyboard order and focus. Check labels before and after entry. Trigger every error. Compare copy with the approved content source. Verify asset versions. Record screenshots and observations.

Classify each result as pass, fail, blocked, or not applicable. A blocked check prevents approval when it covers a hard constraint.

When a test fails, update the decision or correction record before another generation. Do not rely on telling the same chat, "remember what I said."

## Compress context without erasing the reason

A handoff should be short enough to load reliably, but compression must preserve the facts that constrain future choices. Keep the decision, reason, approval source, and affected artifacts together.

Bad compression says, "Use the single-column layout." Useful compression says the single-column layout is approved because the two-column alternative failed reading order at the required narrow viewport. The reason tells the next designer which property must survive a variation.

Separate hard constraints from preferences. Hard constraints block acceptance. Preferences guide tradeoffs but may change through review. Unknowns identify a decision that has not been made.

Periodically rebuild the handoff from canonical files and compare it with the previous version. This catches manually copied statements that no longer match the brief or decision register. Keep the generated handoff's source list and hash in its receipt.

Archive closed session notes outside the default retrieval path. Retain them according to policy, but do not make the next model read every abandoned variation. A reviewer should be able to open the evidence when a decision is challenged.

The final handoff test belongs to the receiving operator. Ask that person to continue one small design task, run the next test, and explain any blocked condition. A file that only its author can interpret is still incomplete.

Record recurring failures in the [correction log](/articles/ai-correction-log-template) so a rejected design cannot silently return in the next session.

## Approval and stopping boundary

The workflow may summarize authorized sessions, assemble a handoff, link approved assets, create synthetic concepts, and run non-production design tests.

It stops before changing the approved brief, declaring accessibility conformance, publishing assets, modifying production components, purchasing stock media, or presenting an unapproved concept as final. The design owner approves direction. The product owner approves scope. Qualified reviewers approve accessibility claims.

If a source asset is missing or inaccessible, identify the gap and stop the affected test. Do not reconstruct it from a screenshot without labeling the result as a new draft.

## Questions about How to Preserve Context From AI Design Sessions: Decisions, Constraints, and Handoff

### How do you preserve context from a long AI design session?

Write a design handoff containing the users and job, approved direction, hard constraints, rejected alternatives, linked assets, open questions, and the next visual test. Keep session notes as evidence, but let the reviewed handoff govern the next session.

### What should an AI handoff include so another model can continue the design?

Include the current goal, constraints, accepted and rejected decisions with reasons, asset paths, unresolved questions, completed work, and one dependency-ordered next test. Give the second model only the handoff and linked evidence, then check whether its concept respects the recorded decisions.

### Should a design handoff preserve the full AI conversation?

Preserve the conversation as evidence when needed, but do not use the whole trail as the default working context. Compress it into reviewed decisions, constraints, rejected paths, assets, unknowns, and the next test without erasing why each decision was made.
