# Build search visibility before launch so your product is findable on day one.

A founder spends nine months in stealth, launches on a Tuesday, and gets a spike from social posts and a newsletter. By Friday the spike is gone. Google shows the site for its brand name and nothing else, because the domain is four days old and holds five pages.

Many founders delay SEO until launch: "We will optimize for search once we have something to show." That order can cost six to twelve months of organic growth in the window where early traction decides survival. Search engines need time to discover a site, crawl it, and trust it. A new domain filled with content tomorrow usually needs three to six months to compete, even with good work.

Pre-launch SEO reverses the order. You build search visibility while you build the product, so organic discovery works from launch day. Early users then find you through Google as well as through announcements.

## Know what starting early buys you

- **Compounding.** An article published six months before launch that ranks and earns links adds authority that helps the product pages later. An article published the week after launch starts from zero.
- **Demand validation.** Keyword research shows how many people search for the problem you solve. If nobody searches for the pain point, distribution will be hard. You test that assumption before you commit everything.
- **Positioning evidence.** The pages that rank for your target keywords show which messages and formats work: comparisons, tutorials, or case studies. That informs your positioning.
- **Early users.** Pre-launch content attracts people who research solutions. An email form on those pages builds a waitlist from searchers, who often show more intent than an audience from a viral post.
- **A calm launch week.** When crawlability, URLs, page speed, and analytics are right before launch, you spend launch week on users, not on technical fires.

The [startup SEO first 90 days guide](/articles/startup-seo-first-90-days) covers the period right after launch.

## Choose the domain and hosting

**Domain age.** Google has said that domain age is not a ranking factor. An expired domain with a clean link history can carry existing links. Since March 2024, Google's spam policies target expired domain abuse, which means buying old domains to rank unrelated content. For most founders, a new domain that matches the brand is the better choice.

**Top-level domain.** Google treats generic top-level domains alike for ranking, and it treats `.io` and `.ai` as generic. The choice matters for trust and memory. `.com` is the most familiar, especially in the US. `.io` suits developer tools and `.ai` suits AI products. Users may distrust `.biz`, `.info`, or `.club`. A country-code domain, such as `.co.uk` or `.de`, signals a target country; use one only if you serve that country.

**Blog location.** Google can rank both `blog.yourproduct.com` and `yourproduct.com/blog`. A subdirectory keeps all content and links on one host, which is simpler to manage and measure. Use a subdirectory unless your platform forces a subdomain.

**Hosting.** Choose hosting with 99.9 percent uptime or better and TLS included. Look for a time to first byte (TTFB) under 200 ms. Poor hosting slows pages and causes crawl errors. Put static assets behind a CDN, such as Cloudflare or Fastly, from the start.

**Staging.** Keep staging sites out of the index with password protection, or at least a `noindex` tag. An indexed staging copy duplicates your content and splits signals. Before you choose a site builder, check it against the [tech stack decisions that hurt SEO](/articles/tech-stack-decisions-kill-seo).

## Build the technical base first

- **Responsive layout.** Google indexes the mobile version of each page. Make every page work on phones, tablets, and desktops before launch.
- **HTTPS.** Browsers mark HTTP pages "Not secure", and Google uses HTTPS as a light ranking signal. Turn on HTTPS from day one with Let's Encrypt, which is free, or a certificate from your host.
- **XML sitemap.** List every page you want indexed and submit the sitemap in Google Search Console. A small site can use a hand-written file; a larger one needs a generated sitemap.
- **robots.txt.** Write the crawl rules on purpose. A common mistake blocks important pages. Check the file in the Search Console robots.txt report before launch. Google retired the older robots.txt Tester in December 2023.
- **Structured data.** Add schema.org markup: `Organization` for the company, `Article` for posts, and `SoftwareApplication` or `Product` for product pages. Eligible pages can earn rich results.
- **Canonical tags.** Set canonical URLs so a page reachable at several addresses resolves to one. Cover variants with and without a trailing slash, and with and without `www`.
- **Page speed.** Compress images, minify CSS and JavaScript, lazy-load below the fold, and turn on compression. Speed work is harder after launch, when it competes with features.
- **Analytics.** Install GA4 and verify the domain in Search Console before launch. You then have traffic, behavior, crawl error, and query data from day one.

## Publish content about the problem, not the product

Before launch, almost nobody searches for your product name. Target the problems it solves:

| Weak target | Strong target |
|---|---|
| "BestTaskApp features" | "How to manage remote team tasks" |
| "BestTaskApp pricing" | "Async standup template for remote teams" |

Problem content reaches the people who research solutions, who are your pre-launch audience.

**Pillars and clusters.** Build topical authority with a complete guide on the main topic and detailed articles on each subtopic. For a project management tool, the pillar could be "Complete guide to remote team collaboration". The cluster articles could cover async communication, time zone management, and remote onboarding. Link each cluster article to the pillar.

**Niche angles.** Generic topics compete with established brands. Industry or use-case topics face less competition. "Construction project management for small contractors" has a smaller audience than "project management tips", but it converts better and ranks sooner.

**Comparison and alternative pages.** Pages for "[Competitor] alternatives" and "Best [category] tools" capture visitors who are choosing a product. Present your product, even in beta, as a real option.

**Email capture.** Put a sign-up call to action on every post. Announce the launch to that list. These subscribers found you while they searched for a solution.

**Cadence.** Aim for two to four substantial posts each week, of 1,500 words or more. Keep that pace for the three to six months before launch. Consistency matters more than volume.

If you cannot write before launch, hire freelance writers. Good SEO content does not need the founder to write it. Writers can work from your keyword targets and outlines. The other option is a smaller pre-launch product scope that frees time for content.

## Earn the first links

- **Founder story and PR.** Tell the founding story, the problem, or a funding round through press releases, podcasts, and industry publications. Each linked mention adds authority.
- **Partner directories.** If the product integrates with existing tools, get listed in their app or integration directories. Links from established domains build trust fast.
- **Guest articles.** Write for publications your buyers read. Most allow an author bio link. Choose relevance over raw authority scores.
- **Communities.** Take part in Reddit, niche forums, Slack groups, and Discord servers. Share your content where it answers a real question, not as a pitch.
- **Journalist queries.** Answer source requests on services such as HARO. Cision shut HARO down in December 2024, and Featured.com relaunched it in April 2025. Confirm which services are active before you rely on one. Quotes in news and industry sites bring strong links to a new domain.
- **Founder profiles.** Link LinkedIn, X, and other profiles to the site. These links are usually `nofollow`, but they bring visitors and brand searches.

## Plan keywords for launch

**Problem keywords first, solution keywords next.** Before launch, focus on problem keywords such as "how to manage freelance invoices". After launch, add solution keywords such as "freelance invoice software". Problem keywords bring early-funnel visitors; solution keywords bring buyers. The [keyword research process guide](/articles/keyword-research-process-guide) covers the method.

**Volume and competition.** A new domain will not rank soon for keywords with 50,000 or more monthly searches. Target medium-volume keywords, about 1,000 to 10,000 searches, and long-tail keywords under 1,000. Their competition is lower and their intent clearer.

**Validation.** If the keywords you expected show no search volume, the problem may be rarer than you think. High-volume keywords with weak existing answers signal an opening.

**Competitor gaps.** Use Ahrefs or Semrush to find keywords competitors rank for and you do not. Publish better answers before launch.

**Branded search.** Track searches for your product name. Rising branded volume is a leading sign of market recognition.

## Avoid the usual pre-launch mistakes

- **A forgotten `noindex`.** Founders block the beta site with `noindex`, then launch without removing it. The site stays invisible for weeks.
- **Placeholder pages.** Do not publish "lorem ipsum" or thin pages. Keep unfinished pages off the live site.
- **A slow "simple" landing page.** Google's field data for Core Web Vitals builds from real visits, and a slow launch page sets a poor baseline that takes time to shed.
- **A limited platform.** Some site builders make URLs hard to change, restrict structured data, host slowly, or render content only with JavaScript. Check SEO basics before you commit.
- **Keyword stuffing.** Write for people. Search engines judge meaning, not exact-match density.
- **Heavy images.** Compress, convert to WebP, lazy-load, and add alt text before launch.
- **Missing redirects.** If you change URLs before launch, add 301 redirects from the old URLs.

## Run the launch-week checklist

1. Remove every `noindex` tag from pages you want indexed. Confirm that `robots.txt` blocks no critical resources.
2. Submit the updated XML sitemap in Search Console.
3. Confirm that GA4 and Search Console collect data, and that sign-up and conversion events fire.
4. Test mobile rendering with URL Inspection in Search Console and with Lighthouse in mobile mode. Google retired the Mobile-Friendly Test in December 2023.
5. Run PageSpeed Insights on key pages. Aim for LCP under 2.5 s, INP under 200 ms, and CLS under 0.1.
6. Check the Search Console Page indexing report for 404s, server errors, and redirect chains.
7. Start rank tracking in Ahrefs, Semrush, or AccuRanker to set a baseline.
8. Publish a launch post on your blog. Submit to Product Hunt, Hacker News, and relevant subreddits for referral traffic and links from launch lists.
9. Update LinkedIn, X, Crunchbase, and directories with the live URL and consistent company details.
10. Ask beta users for reviews on G2, Capterra, Trustpilot, or your industry's platforms. Do not offer rewards for reviews.

## Measure pre-launch progress

| Metric | How to measure | Working target |
|---|---|---|
| Organic traffic | Weekly visits to the blog | 10 to 20 percent growth a week in the two to three months before launch |
| Indexed pages | Search Console Page indexing report | Every published quality page indexed |
| Referring domains | Ahrefs or Semrush | 10 to 20 before launch |
| Rankings | Rank tracker | Movement from unranked to pages 3 to 5 for target keywords |
| Email sign-ups from organic | Sign-ups divided by organic visitors | 2 to 5 percent on early-funnel content |
| Brand searches | Google Trends | A rising line |

## Set the timeline and budget

Start 6 to 12 months before launch for the most effect, and no later than 3 months. Content published closer to launch will not rank until well after it.

If stealth matters competitively, publish problem-space content that builds authority without revealing the product. Reveal the product at launch.

You can wait until after launch. The organic channel then contributes little for six to nine months, which is a long time for a startup that spends runway every month.

Budget ranges from nothing, with founder-written content and free tools, up to a program with professional content, an SEO consultant, and link building. The middle path pays for a content writer and one SEO tool subscription. Scale the budget with your ambition and resources. The [bootstrapped SEO strategy guide](/articles/bootstrapped-seo-strategy) shows how to get far on a small budget. [SEO quick wins for founders](/articles/founder-seo-quick-wins) lists the first steps with the fastest return.
