# Rank pins in Pinterest search to send steady traffic to your website.

A social media manager posts to Pinterest the way they post to Instagram: daily, on trend, and measured by followers. The pins get a few saves and then stop. Meanwhile a competitor with 500 followers gets thousands of visits a month from pins it published last year.

Pinterest works as a visual search engine first and a social network second. People arrive with search intent, such as "kitchen remodel ideas", "keto meal prep", or "minimalist logo design", not to follow friends. A pin stays discoverable for months or years. An Instagram post gets most of its engagement in its first day or two.

Treat Pinterest as search infrastructure, and it offers four things:

- referral traffic that grows over time, as pins often gain traction three to six months after publication;
- visibility that outlasts a campaign, because evergreen pins keep sending clicks;
- an audience that plans purchases;
- a link to your site on every pin.

This guide covers how Pinterest ranks pins, how to set up the profile, boards, and pins, a content plan, and the metrics that show results.

## Know why Pinterest sends more traffic

**Longevity.** A well-optimized pin keeps earning impressions and clicks six months or more after publication. The effort behind one good pin pays across hundreds of later sessions. Social posts need constant replacement to stay visible.

**Search-led discovery.** Pinterest reports that 97 percent of its top searches are unbranded. People look for ideas and solutions, not accounts. An account with 500 followers can outdrive one with 50,000 if its pins rank for valuable queries. Follower count affects early engagement on a new pin; search visibility decides long-term traffic.

**Outbound clicks.** Pinterest shows the destination link on every pin and earns from ads, not from keeping users on the platform. Instagram limits links: they live in the bio and in Story link stickers, not in feed captions. That difference is why many brands get more referral traffic from Pinterest for the same effort.

**Visual search.** Users can photograph an object, such as a couch, a necklace, or a plated dish, and Pinterest returns similar pins. Your content can surface on visual attributes, not only keywords.

**Purchase planning.** People use Pinterest to plan weddings, renovations, wardrobes, and gift lists. Pinterest's own research claims that weekly users spend twice as much per month as people not on Pinterest. Treat vendor research as directional, but the planning behavior puts pinners closer to a purchase than casual feed browsers.

Instagram still wins for brand awareness and community. Many brands use Instagram for engagement and Pinterest for traffic. The [social media and SEO synergy guide](/articles/social-media-seo-synergy) covers how the channels work together.

## Understand how Pinterest ranks pins

Pinterest has described four quality factors behind its feed and search, plus signals from engagement and text.

- **Domain quality.** Pinterest considers the quality of the site a pin links to. A fast, working, mobile-friendly landing page is the safe choice.
- **Pinner quality.** Accounts that publish steadily, earn saves, clicks, and close-ups, and draw few spam reports gain distribution over time.
- **Pin quality.** Pinterest's computer vision judges resolution, clarity, composition, and whether text overlays are readable. Blurry or cluttered images do poorly regardless of keywords.
- **Topic relevance.** Pinterest sorts pins into interest categories. An account focused on one niche signals expertise. An account that pins across 20 unrelated categories dilutes it.
- **Early engagement.** A new pin that collects saves and clicks quickly gets wider distribution, which brings more engagement.
- **Keywords.** Pin titles, descriptions, board names, and profile text are all searchable. Pinterest matches keywords more literally than Google, so use the exact phrases people search.

## Set up the profile for search

**Use a business account.** A personal account lacks analytics, Rich Pins, and ads. A business account is free.

**Put keywords in the display name.** "Sarah Johnson | Keto Meal Prep" tells Pinterest and searchers the topic. "Sarah's Pins" does not.

**Write the profile description for your core topics.** For example:

```text
Quick keto recipes, meal prep plans, and low-carb snacks for busy parents. Free meal plans at [website].com
```

The profile can then surface for "keto recipes", "meal prep", and "low-carb snacks".

**Claim your website.** Verify the domain with a meta tag, an HTML file, or a DNS record. A claimed domain shows your profile picture on pins from your site and unlocks website analytics.

**Name boards after searches.** Each board title should target one query:

| Weak | Strong |
|---|---|
| Food I like | Keto breakfast recipes under 10 minutes |
| Ideas | Small bathroom storage ideas |

Board descriptions take up to 500 characters. Use them for related keywords:

```text
Fast keto breakfast ideas for busy mornings. From egg muffins to protein smoothies, these low-carb recipes keep you full until lunch without breaking ketosis. Meal prep options included.
```

If your profile layout offers featured boards, feature the boards tied to your most valuable keywords or conversion paths.

## Create pins that rank and get clicked

**Image size.** Use vertical images at a 2:3 ratio, at least 1,000 × 1,500 pixels. Square and horizontal images get cropped in most placements. The [image optimization guide](/articles/image-optimization-ux-seo) covers compression for the landing page side.

**Text overlay.** Most people scan the feed fast, so put the headline on the image:

- place it in the top third, where feed crops keep it;
- use high contrast, dark on light or light on dark;
- use a large sans-serif font that reads on a phone;
- keep one focal point.

**Pin title.** Titles take up to 100 characters. Put the main keyword first:

```text
Keto breakfast egg muffins: 5-minute meal prep recipe for busy mornings
```

Avoid clickbait. Pinterest favors plain descriptive titles.

**Pin description.** Descriptions take up to 500 characters. Structure them for readers and for search:

1. Open with the value and the main keyword: "These keto egg muffins make a protein-packed breakfast you can grab on busy mornings. Perfect for Sunday meal prep."
2. Add supporting keywords, benefits, and detail: "Each muffin has 8 g protein and under 2 g net carbs. Add bacon, vegetables, or cheese. Freeze extras for quick reheating."
3. End with a reason to click: "Get the full recipe and five flavor variations."

Pinterest's creative best practices no longer recommend hashtags. Spend the characters on descriptive keywords instead.

**Rich Pins.** Rich Pins pull metadata from your page and show it on the pin. Three types exist:

- **Product Pins** show price, availability, and a buy link.
- **Recipe Pins** show ingredients, cooking time, and servings.
- **Article Pins** show the headline, author, and description.

Rich Pins need Open Graph or schema.org metadata on your pages. Follow Pinterest's current setup steps to turn them on for your domain. The extra detail gives searchers more reason to click.

## Plan content for steady growth

**Favor evergreen topics.** "Keto meal prep basics" earns traffic for years. "2026 diet trends" peaks in January and fades.

**Publish on a steady cadence.** Five to ten new original pins a week builds momentum better than bursts. Long gaps can reduce distribution, because the account looks inactive.

**Make several pins per page.** Create three to five designs for each post or product, with different headlines, colors, and images. Several pins can point to one URL. They widen your reach instead of competing.

**Pin to a few boards.** One pin can go on three to five relevant boards. Spread the saves over at least a day. Ten or more boards for one pin can look like spam.

**Work ahead of the season.** Pinterest users often plan weeks or months ahead. Pin holiday content in September, summer recipes in March, and back-to-school organizing in May. Early pins gather saves before demand peaks and rank well when it arrives.

**Use video.** Short videos of 6 to 15 seconds, vertical or square, play automatically in the feed. Use them for tutorials, product demos, and before-and-after results. Fewer accounts publish video than static pins, so it faces less competition.

**Use multi-page pins for sequences.** Pinterest launched Story Pins, renamed them Idea Pins in 2021, and later folded the format into standard pins. Standard pins now accept several images or video. Use the format for step-by-step tutorials and product walkthroughs.

The [social media content repurposing guide](/articles/social-media-content-seo-repurposing) shows how to turn one article into several pins and posts.

## Use analytics to improve pins

**Audience.** Pinterest Analytics shows age, gender, location, and interests. If 70 percent of engaged users are women aged 25 to 34 interested in home decor, write for that core.

**Top pins.** Find the pins with the most impressions, saves, outbound clicks, and close-ups. Look for the shared visual style, headline pattern, and topic, then repeat it.

**Site traffic.** Track Pinterest referrals in Google Analytics. Add UTM parameters to pin links to compare conversion rate, revenue, and engagement with other sources.

**Trends.** Pinterest Trends shows rising searches, and Pinterest publishes an annual trend report. Find rising queries in your niche and publish before competitors do.

**Diagnosis.** Many impressions with few clicks mean the image or title does not promise enough; redesign it. Many clicks with poor engagement on your site mean the landing page does not deliver what the pin promised; align them.

## Build reach through other accounts

**Group boards.** Contributors share a board and its followers. Pinterest has given group boards less weight over the years. Join only active boards with real engagement, for example 20 or more new pins a week.

**Creator partnerships.** Partner with creators in adjacent niches. A keto recipe creator and a fitness creator can share each other's content with complementary audiences.

**User-generated content.** Ask customers to pin your products. Contests and features on your profile spread your content without matching effort from your team.

Pinterest tested a Communities feature and later removed it. Put that effort into boards and creator partnerships.

## Avoid the common mistakes

- **Instagram habits.** Twenty hashtags, vague captions, and personality-led posts do not match search behavior.
- **Weak landing pages.** Slow, broken, or thin pages waste the click and can lower distribution.
- **Too many repins.** Pinterest favors original content. Aim for about 80 percent original pins.
- **Desktop-first design.** Most Pinterest use is on phones. Small text, horizontal images, and clutter fail there.
- **Inconsistent branding.** Use a consistent palette, typeface, and layout so users recognize your pins.
- **Keyword stuffing.** Lists of loosely related keywords can trigger spam filters. Write natural sentences.
- **Early deletion.** Some pins peak 6 to 12 months after publication. Do not delete a pin for a slow start.

## Measure results

Expect measurable referral traffic within 60 to 90 days of steady pinning. Significant traffic, for example 500 or more visits a month, often takes six to nine months.

| Metric | What to watch |
|---|---|
| Referral traffic | Month-over-month Pinterest visits in Google Analytics; growth of 15 to 25 percent a month is a healthy early pace |
| Search visibility | Manual searches for target keywords; Pinterest has no Search Console equivalent |
| Saves and outbound clicks | Rates per impression, compared with your account average; saves signal later intent, clicks bring traffic now |
| Conversions | Purchases, leads, and sign-ups through the Pinterest tag; calculate acquisition cost and return |
| Followers | A secondary health signal; followers see new pins first and give them early engagement |

Pinterest links are `nofollow`, so they pass no link equity to your site. Pins can still appear in Google Images and sometimes in web results for visual queries, and the traffic they send is real.
