Brief those actions explicitly. Keep the keyboard path part of the gallery's acceptance criteria. WCAG's keyboard criterion addresses operating functionality through a keyboard interface, with an exception for functions requiring path-dependent movement. [W3C keyboard explanation](https://www.w3.org/WAI/WCAG22/Understanding/keyboard.html), checked 2026.10.23. The checks below are a proposed gallery review. They provide evidence for tested interactions, rather than a complete accessibility assessment. ## Identify how the enlarged gallery behaves Ask the developer whether enlargement opens a modal dialog, another page, or an inline view. Record the public gallery address and controls involved. Use the applicable interaction pattern in the brief. Keep modal-specific requirements attached to a modal implementation. Avoid applying them to a normal linked image page without checking the design. Choose a collection with several photographs and a clear order. Have the studio confirm the intended captions and selection behavior before reviewing controls. ## Make opening the image an observable step In an agreed review environment, start from the portfolio page. Move to a thumbnail using the keyboard and activate it. Record whether the intended image opens and where focus moves. W3C's modal-dialog pattern places focus inside an opened dialog. Ask the developer to show that behavior if the gallery uses a modal. Record a specific failure, such as focus remaining on an obscured page control. ## Check each available action Use this proposed acceptance sheet: | Action | Expected evidence | | --- | --- | | Open a photograph | Correct image and understandable focus position | | Next or previous | Reachable controls and the intended image change | | Read the caption | Caption remains associated with the current image | | Close the overlay | Reachable close control and functioning dismissal | | Continue browsing | Focus returns to a useful portfolio position | | Reach the inquiry | A working route after leaving the gallery | Include only controls the design offers. If the gallery supports zooming or another action, add a separate case. Do not require visitors to infer an undocumented keyboard shortcut. For a failed action, record the starting image, key sequence, observed result, and expected result. Give the developer a reproducible case rather than a general request to improve accessibility. ## Review closing and focus return W3C's modal-dialog pattern uses Escape to close the dialog. It generally returns focus to the invoking element, with documented workflow exceptions. The pattern also recommends a visible close button. Then confirm that the visitor can continue from an understandable place in the portfolio. Test more than the first image. Include an image near the end and any state with different controls. Keep the observed focus position in the result. ## Retest the failed cases after repair Save the page version and the developer's correction. Repeat each failed action and check the surrounding sequence. Include the route from gallery viewing to the relevant service inquiry.
