# Perplexity Memory Across Conversations: What It Retains and Why History Can Disappear.

A researcher stores a client project across several Perplexity conversations. The interface now calls them Sessions. One result is missing from the sidebar, and the next answer cannot reconstruct the approved conclusion. The researcher remembers the claim but not which sources supported it.

Perplexity continuity has several layers: the current session, session history, personal memory, project-scoped memory, temporary or incognito behavior, and exported answers. Diagnose the layer before deciding that the system forgot the work.

The safest recovery ends with an owned research record containing the conclusion, source URLs, decision status, and export receipt.

Perplexity documentation checked September 19, 2026 uses **Session** and **Project**. Some help URLs retain the older `thread` and `spaces` words. Those legacy URL slugs do not imply that the current page title or your account is wrong.

## Separate sessions, history, and memory

Perplexity defines a Session as a conversation history that keeps the messages and sources used in that session. Its help center says signed-in sessions appear in History and can be exported as PDF, Markdown, or DOCX. It also says anonymous sessions expire after fourteen days and cannot be recovered after that period. [Perplexity: What is a Session?](https://www.perplexity.ai/help-center/en/articles/10354769-what-is-a-thread)

Memory is a different layer. Perplexity's enterprise memory documentation distinguishes saved memories from search history and says users can manage memory controls in Settings. It also describes project-scoped behavior, where project memory and project sessions can be separated from personal sessions. [Perplexity: Memory for Enterprise Organizations](https://www.perplexity.ai/help-center/en/articles/13654357-memory-for-enterprise-organizations)

Use these terms consistently:

- session: one conversation and its cited answers;
- history: the account's list of stored sessions;
- memory: retained preferences or information used across work;
- project: a scoped workspace with its own context settings;
- temporary or incognito session: a session with different retention behavior;
- export: a user-controlled copy of an answer or account data;
- owned record: the maintained conclusion, sources, corrections, and decision status outside Perplexity.

A session can exist in History without becoming reliable cross-session memory. A memory can influence a new answer without preserving the full source trail. An export can preserve text without making it current authority.

## Know how Perplexity memory selects context

A comparison written in January 2026 described how Perplexity memory worked at that date. Its pattern explains many reports that Perplexity "forgot" a user. You research competitor analysis frameworks in one session. In the next session, you ask how to apply them, and Perplexity does not know your industry. Two days later, it asks again.

The comparison described four features:

- **Cross-session persistence.** Perplexity stores preferences and interests across conversations. The memory layer follows you when you switch among GPT, Claude, and Gemini models inside Perplexity.
- **Retrieval-based context.** Perplexity does not carry full conversation history forward. At query time, it retrieves snippets from past interactions that look relevant and adds them to the current query.
- **Auto-loaded context.** It preloads what it judges most important, such as your role or recurring topics.
- **Visible memory use.** It shows which memories or past interactions shaped a response.

Controls at that date let users turn memory off, delete single memories, and work in incognito mode without memory. Perplexity's enterprise memory page says memory data is encrypted and that Enterprise memory content does not train models. On other plans, check the AI data retention setting and the current terms.

The design has a cost. Perplexity assembles context per query from a store of fragments. If the retrieval misses, the answer has no fallback. Each query also stands alone, so Perplexity does not connect earlier research to a new question unless you ask it to. The [AI memory tools comparison](/articles/ai-memory-tools-comparison) shows a similar retrieval trade-off in RAG systems.

You cannot edit one master profile. You teach Perplexity through conversation, and facts accumulate without structure, some current and some stale. Perplexity compresses long research threads to fit context limits, and detail drops out. The design suits discrete research questions better than continuous work.

The comparison listed four workarounds, each with a limit:

1. Save related searches into Collections. They keep research together, but they do not share context with each other or add it to new queries.
2. Open each session with "remember our conversation about X." Retrieval sometimes finds the right context and sometimes does not.
3. Leave memory on and rely on auto-loading. The right details may load, or the first prompts go to background again.
4. Stay in one thread for one topic. The thread keeps its context until you leave it, and early context loses weight as the thread grows.

None of them gives you one maintained profile. Perplexity memory also follows you only across the models inside Perplexity, not into other tools. The durable fix is the owned record described below: a short file with your role, clients, projects, and preferences that you load at the start of research, plus research notes with their sources. For why a chat archive cannot fill that role, read [why chat history is not business memory](/articles/chat-history-is-not-business-memory).

## Treat each answer as a fresh search

Perplexity looks like a chat assistant, but it works as a search engine first. Each query runs a new search of web sources, ranks them, and writes an answer from them. The earlier searches in a session do not shape the new search unless the query names them.

That design has sound reasons. Independent queries keep one search from bleeding into the next, so a question about Java frameworks does not inherit an earlier question about Python tutorials. Each query also pulls current sources instead of building on possibly stale results. Stateless queries are simpler to run at the scale of millions of searches.

Multi-step research strains the design. Take a competitive analysis:

1. "Who are the top competitors in this market?"
2. "What pricing models do they use?"
3. "Which competitor has the largest market share?"
4. "How does competitor A differ from competitor B?"

Each query narrows the last. Inside one session, a near follow-up such as "tell me more about the second competitor" usually resolves. After five more searches, it often does not, and query 4 needs the competitor names again.

The usual workaround is to copy findings into notes after each search and paste them back into later queries. That works, but it adds manual copying, a growing paste that crowds the prompt, and notes with no structure. The researcher becomes the memory layer.

| Perplexity fits | Perplexity strains |
|---|---|
| Fast answers to specific questions | Multi-step research that builds on earlier findings |
| Answers with cited sources | Context that must persist across sessions |
| Current data from live web searches | Structured management of findings |
| Comparison of sources on one topic | Links to ongoing projects and work |

If you use Perplexity only for one-off questions that need no business context, the reset costs you little.

Split the jobs by function. Search and synthesize in Perplexity. Keep the research state in files: what you researched, the key findings and their sources, the open questions, and how the findings connect. An agent that reads files, such as Claude Code in an Obsidian vault, can then load that state at the start of the next session. The research note format in the export section below holds the same fields.

## Diagnose why a session is missing

Start with account identity. Confirm the email address, username, workspace, and project. A different sign-in can make the entire history appear absent.

Open History directly rather than relying only on the sidebar. Search for a distinctive phrase. Check filters, session type, sorting, project membership, and whether Comet sessions are hidden.

Perplexity's missing-session guidance lists temporary sessions, logged-out use, incognito mode, enterprise retention policies, and a different account among the reasons sessions may not appear as expected. It states that incognito sessions expire after twenty-four hours and logged-out sessions expire after fourteen days. [Perplexity: Where did my sessions go?](https://www.perplexity.ai/help-center/en/articles/12637451-where-did-my-threads-go)

Record the diagnosis as one of:

- wrong account or workspace;
- filtered or hidden view;
- moved into a project;
- temporary session expired;
- incognito session expired;
- enterprise retention applied;
- manually deleted;
- service or interface issue;
- unresolved.

Do not claim that an expired or deleted session can be recovered if the provider says it cannot. Look for owned exports, source URLs, downstream files, and receipts instead.

If every session is missing and the account is correct, preserve screenshots and account identifiers, then contact Perplexity support through the official path. Do not send client secrets in a support ticket.

## Inspect `perplexity-continuity-test.csv`

Test with a synthetic project before relying on Perplexity for live research continuity.

```csv
case_id,session,mode,source_url,expected_retained_fact,cross_session_prompt,export_status,result
PCT-01,SYNTH-A,signed-in,https://example.com/source-a,"Project color is cobalt","What color did Project Test approve?",markdown,pending
PCT-02,SYNTH-B,incognito,https://example.com/source-b,"Temporary code is ORCHID","What temporary code appeared?",none,pending
PCT-03,SYNTH-C,project,https://example.com/source-c,"Project owner is Casey","Who owns Project Test?",markdown,pending
```

Add account, workspace, plan, memory settings, project settings, start time, observed expiry, and session URL in a real fixture. Use harmless facts and public source pages.

The expected result must reflect the mode. An incognito session should not be expected to become durable history. A project-scoped fact should not leak into an unrelated project. A signed-in session should remain discoverable according to the current provider behavior and retention policy.

## Test continuity inside and across sessions

Keep a local copy of the fixture before starting. Record the account, workspace, project, mode, and memory controls beside every result so a later interface change does not erase the test conditions.

Run the test list:

1. Start a signed-in session with one public source and harmless fact.
2. Ask a follow-up in the same session and confirm the source remains visible.
3. Export the answer as Markdown.
4. Start a new ordinary session and ask about the harmless fact.
5. Record whether memory or history is used and which source is cited.
6. Create a project-scoped session with a different harmless fact.
7. Open an unrelated project and test for cross-project leakage.
8. Start an incognito or temporary session and record its stated retention.
9. Search History for each durable test session.
10. Delete one synthetic session and confirm the provider's deletion behavior.
11. Disable a memory control and rerun the cross-session prompt.
12. Import the exported Markdown into another tool and reproduce the conclusion.

Pass requires correct same-session continuity, expected mode-specific retention, project isolation, source visibility, and a usable export. Cross-session recall without a source is not enough for a business decision.

The [ChatGPT and Perplexity memory comparison](/articles/chatgpt-vs-perplexity-memory-business) helps buyers compare these controls as operating evidence instead of feature labels.

## Export the source trail

Export before a project depends on one vendor history. Keep the answer, source URLs, retrieval date, search question, decision status, and corrections.

Convert the research result into a maintained note:

```markdown
# Research decision: synthetic vendor test
status:: accepted for planning
retrieved:: 2026.08.27
session_url:: PERPLEXITY-SESSION-URL
export:: exports/perplexity/SYNTH-A.md
question:: Which option supports requirement R-14?
conclusion:: Option Blue supports R-14 in the current documentation.
sources:
- https://example.com/source-a
limits:: No production test completed.
owner:: ROLE-RESEARCH-LEAD
recheck_trigger:: source update or before purchase
```

Open every material source. Do not rely on the answer's summary alone. Mark inaccessible sources and claims that remain unverified.

The [vendor archive migration guide](/articles/move-ai-work-out-of-vendor-archive) explains how to keep decisions and evidence while leaving repetitive or low-value chat material behind.

## Recover a missing project into an owned record

When a session is unavailable, gather surviving evidence in order:

1. exported Markdown, PDF, or DOCX;
2. source URLs saved elsewhere;
3. project files created from the research;
4. citations in downstream documents;
5. browser history, where policy permits;
6. colleague copies or shared links;
7. recollection, labeled unverified.

Reopen primary sources and rebuild the conclusion. Do not reconstruct a material decision from memory alone. Record gaps inside the deliverable and lower the decision status until evidence is restored.

If the missing session was temporary by design, the no-recovery result is valid. The process failure was relying on temporary state for durable work. Correct the workflow, not the provider's intended retention mode.

The [ChatGPT-to-Perplexity transfer guide](/articles/transfer-chatgpt-history-to-perplexity) covers the inverse risk: copying an archive into another product without first promoting current facts and source authority.

## Approval and stopping boundary

The working result is a context path with the recovered conclusion, source trail, and unresolved gaps.

The recovery workflow may inspect History, filters, account identity, memory settings, project membership, and existing exports. It may run synthetic tests and prepare an owned research note. It stops before changing enterprise retention, deleting material sessions, sharing a private session, uploading protected client data, or treating an unverified reconstruction as approved.

The account owner approves user-level settings. The project owner approves project scope. The data owner approves retention and deletion. The decision owner approves the recovered conclusion. If account identity, source evidence, or decision status is unresolved, label the gap and stop.

The same owned-record method runs each client's content library with SEO and signal desk: [How the build works: Owned files, checks, handoff.](/how-it-works)
