Google's current explanation places it among systems that analyze links between pages to understand their subject matter and potential usefulness. For a small business owner, the practical task is to evaluate link proposals and maintain useful paths through the website. Avoid turning an unfamiliar score into a purchasing decision by itself. ## Ask what the reported number represents When a provider reports an authority or link score, ask for the product name, metric definition, source, and date. Keep that vendor measure labeled by its source. Google says third-party SEO tools do not have access to its internal ranking data. It also says Google does not evaluate or endorse those tools. Ask what decision the provider proposes to make from it. Require supporting evidence about the pages and links involved. ## Make your own important pages reachable Google recommends crawlable links and descriptive anchor text. Its guidance explains that standard anchor elements with an href are the reliable pattern for extracting link destinations. Ask the maintainer to inspect how a visitor reaches your services, project evidence, and contact page. Use labels that describe the destination. Fix links that point to removed pages or unrelated destinations. Do not add links solely to hit a numerical target. ## Evaluate external link work by the actual destination Ask who publishes a proposed link, why the page serves its readers, and what your business contributes. Keep sponsorship and advertising terms visible to the maintainer. Google defines link spam as links created mainly to manipulate search rankings. Its examples include buying or selling links for ranking purposes and excessive exchanges. Paid placements can use appropriate link qualification. Request the proposed sites, placement terms, and qualification method before paying for work. ## Check changes and results separately After link repairs, inspect the source page and destination. Save the changed URLs and date. A working link establishes the corrected route when tested. Keep that check separate from search performance. Review search observations over an agreed period without claiming that one link caused every change. Retain uncertainty when other site changes happened at the same time.
