# Segment organic traffic so you can show which SEO work drove the growth.

Organic traffic rose 20 percent last month. The CMO asks why. "SEO is working" does not answer the question. Was it the 50 posts the content team published, the speed work the developers shipped, or the 200 links the outreach team earned? You cannot tell, because you measure organic traffic as one number.

Segmentation answers the why. Split by landing page type, and you may find blog traffic up 40 percent while product pages fell 10 percent. Split by device, and you may find a 15 percent mobile drop after a release. Split by brand and non-brand queries, and you learn whether SEO found new customers or existing customers searched your name.

This guide shows how to build the segments in GA4 and Search Console, compare attribution models, and isolate SEO's contribution from other channels. It works for a solo marketer and for a 20-person analytics team.

## Know why the default reports fall short

GA4 reports total organic sessions. That shows the trend. It cannot diagnose performance or prove return, for four reasons.

**Organic visits differ in value.** A person who searches your brand name has high intent and would likely find you anyway. A person who searches "best project management software" is new demand. One organic total hides which tactic worked.

**Last-click attribution hides assists.** Suppose a user finds you through organic search, returns through direct, and converts. Under last-click rules, direct gets the credit, and the SEO visit disappears. Multi-touch attribution credits every touchpoint.

**Totals hide segments.** Organic traffic grows 10 percent. If mobile fell 30 percent and desktop rose 50 percent, you have a mobile problem the total conceals.

**Channels overlap.** When paid search, social ads, email, and SEO run together, default reports cannot isolate SEO's incremental effect. You need controlled segments and holdout tests. The [SEO attribution modeling guide](/articles/attribution-modeling-for-seo) covers the theory in more depth.

## Build five organic segments in GA4

In GA4, open Explore and create segments. A segment filters data to one group of users or sessions. Each segment below starts with the same two conditions: `Session source` equals `google` and `Session medium` equals `organic`. The [GA4 SEO reports guide](/articles/ga4-seo-reports-guide) covers the standard reports these segments extend.

### Segment 1: branded and non-branded

Branded queries contain your brand or product names; those searchers already know you. Non-branded queries do not; those searchers are discovering you.

GA4 has no query data. Google stopped passing organic search keywords to analytics tools in 2013, so they appear as "not provided". Use Search Console instead:

1. Export Search Console query data to BigQuery or Google Sheets.
2. Tag each query as branded or non-branded with a regular expression.
3. Sum clicks for each group every month.

```text
Branded regex: (your brand|product name A|product name B)
Non-branded:   every query that does not match
```

The Search Console performance report also accepts a custom regex filter on the query dimension, so you can check the split without an export.

Read the result. If branded clicks are flat and non-branded clicks grow, SEO is expanding awareness. If non-branded is flat and branded grows, brand marketing is working, not SEO.

For a rough GA4-only version, add a third condition. Set `Landing page` to match your branded landing pages, such as the homepage or `/brand-name`. It mixes branded queries with branded pages, so treat it as an estimate.

### Segment 2: device

Add `Device category` equals `mobile`, then build matching desktop and tablet segments. Compare conversion rate and bounce rate. If mobile bounce rate is double desktop, the mobile experience likely has a problem. If mobile sessions rise while mobile conversions fall, you attract mobile visitors but fail to convert them. The [mobile-first design guide](/articles/mobile-first-design-seo) covers the fixes.

### Segment 3: landing page type

Each page type serves a different funnel stage:

| Page type | Funnel stage | Time to conversion | Example condition |
|---|---|---|---|
| Blog posts | Top: research | Long | `Landing page` contains `/blog/` |
| Category pages | Middle: browsing | Medium | `Landing page` contains `/category/` or `/c/` |
| Product pages | Bottom: evaluation | Short | `Landing page` contains `/product/` or `/p/` |
| Homepage | Mixed, often branded | Varies | `Landing page` exactly matches `/` |

Compare traffic and conversion trends per type. If blog traffic rises and conversions do not, the blog does not move readers toward products. Add calls to action and internal links to product pages.

URL patterns break when paths are irregular. A sturdier method is a custom dimension. Send a `page_template` parameter with each page view, such as `blog_post`, `product_page`, or `category_page`. Use Google Tag Manager or your analytics code. Register it as a custom dimension in GA4, then segment by it.

### Segment 4: new and returning users

Add `New / established` equals `new`. SEO's main job is acquisition, so organic traffic should lean toward new users. If returning users make up most organic traffic, for example 80 percent, SEO re-engages your audience more than it grows it. Track new organic users every month. A flat line means reach has stopped growing.

### Segment 5: location

Add `Country`, `Region`, or `City`. Use it for local SEO and international expansion. If you launched SEO for the UK and UK traffic is flat, the UK plan has not worked yet. If US traffic grew and UK traffic did not, the effort did not reach the new market.

Compare traffic, conversion rate, and revenue per session across regions. Rates differ with culture, price sensitivity, and language. Check that each region receives the correct localized pages through `hreflang`.

## Compare attribution models

Take this conversion path:

1. Organic search to a blog post, then exit.
2. Email visit, then exit.
3. Organic search to a product page, then conversion.

Last-click attribution gives organic 100 percent of the credit and email none, although email was part of the path. Multi-touch models spread the credit.

| Model | Rule | Credit in the example |
|---|---|---|
| Last click | The final touch gets everything | Organic 100 percent |
| Linear | Every touch gets equal credit | Organic 66.7 percent (two of three), email 33.3 percent |
| Time decay | Touches closer to conversion get more | For touches on days 0, 5, and 8: first organic about 20, email about 30, last organic about 50 percent |
| Position based (U-shaped) | First and last get 40 percent each; the middle shares 20 | First organic 40, email 20, last organic 40 percent |
| Data driven | A model learns credit from your conversion paths | Depends on your data |

Linear is fair but ignores the weight of the first and last touch. Time decay favors bottom-of-funnel channels. Position based values acquisition and conversion equally.

**Know what GA4 still offers.** In November 2023, Google removed the first-click, linear, time-decay, and position-based models from GA4. GA4 now offers data-driven attribution, its default, and two last-click models. Data-driven attribution needs a substantial volume of conversions to be stable. To use a rule-based model today, export GA4 data to BigQuery and compute it yourself.

In GA4, open Advertising, then Attribution:

1. Open the Attribution paths report.
2. Select a key event, such as a purchase or sign-up.
3. Read the paths: each session's source and medium, in order, up to the conversion.
4. Open the Attribution models report to set data-driven against last click.

If organic gets 50 percent of the credit under last click but 30 percent under data-driven, last click overstates organic. The reverse is common for content that starts journeys.

## Isolate SEO's incremental effect

When every channel runs at once, you need a test design to prove what SEO added. The [SEO attribution models guide for marketing teams](/articles/seo-attribution-models-marketing) covers how to present the results.

### Run a holdout test

A holdout test pauses SEO work on a random subset and measures the difference. It is the strongest method.

Example: you have 1,000 blog posts. Pick 100 at random as the control group. Continue SEO work, such as internal links and content updates, on the other 900. After three months, compare:

| Group | Change in traffic |
|---|---|
| Treatment, 900 posts | +15 percent |
| Control, 100 posts | +3 percent |
| Incremental effect of SEO work | 12 points |

Without the control, you cannot separate SEO from seasonality or the halo of other channels.

### Compare before and after, with controls

When a holdout is not possible, compare before and after, and control for outside factors.

Example: you shipped speed improvements in the first quarter, and organic traffic rose 20 percent. To control for seasonality, compare with the same quarter last year. That quarter had 100,000 sessions against 120,000 now, so growth is 20 percent. You also raised paid search spend this quarter, and paid brand campaigns can lift branded organic searches. Split the growth:

- branded organic sessions: +10 percent, which paid brand ads may have influenced;
- non-branded organic sessions: +30 percent.

The 30 percent non-branded growth is more likely the effect of SEO than the 10 percent branded growth.

### Build a synthetic control

A synthetic control uses untreated pages or regions as the baseline. Example: you optimize product pages and leave blog pages alone. If blog traffic stays flat while product traffic rises, the rise is more likely SEO than an outside factor. This method needs statistical modeling in R or Python. Google's open-source R package CausalImpact automates the analysis.

### Rule out SEO when traffic drops

Compare organic with other channels over the same dates. Suppose organic fell 20 percent, and paid, direct, and social also fell about 20 percent. The cause is then likely outside SEO: seasonality, market demand, or a brand event. If organic fell and other channels held steady, look at SEO causes. Check for a Google update, a site change, or a manual action. Check the Search Console Page indexing report for indexing drops and the Performance report for ranking drops.

## Segment by search intent

Queries carry different intent, and each intent converts differently:

| Intent | Example | Funnel stage | Conversion rate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Informational | "how to choose running shoes" | Top | Low, with high volume |
| Navigational | "Nike homepage" | Varies | High for your brand; zero for a competitor's |
| Commercial investigation | "best running shoes 2026" | Middle | Medium |
| Transactional | "buy Nike Air Zoom Pegasus 40" | Bottom | High |

GA4 does not classify intent. Build it from Search Console:

1. Export Search Console queries for the last 90 days.
2. Tag each query by intent with regex or manual review:
   - informational: how, what, why, guide, tutorial;
   - navigational: your brand, competitor brands;
   - commercial: best, top, review, vs, compare;
   - transactional: buy, price, shop, discount.
3. Join the query data to GA4 landing page data on the landing page URL.
4. Compare sessions and conversions by intent group.

The join is approximate. Search Console reports queries and clicks; GA4 reports sessions. A page that ranks for both informational and transactional queries mixes both groups. Assign each page to its dominant intent by clicks.

Expect transactional traffic to convert at a much higher rate than informational traffic. If it does not, the transactional landing pages need work. The [CRO and SEO data analysis guide](/articles/cro-seo-data-analysis) shows how to diagnose those pages.
