For a small business, begin with the page that answers an important customer question. That could be a repair service, a location, or a product category. Ask the supplier to scope that page before proposing a sitewide package. The checklist below is a buying brief. Use the [writer's SEO checklist](/articles/seo-writing-checklist-writers) for draft-level editing. ## Start with a URL register Request a table containing the current URL, the customer task, the proposed change, and the reason for it. Add an approver and completion status. For example, a service page might need its scope explained before someone can decide whether to inquire. A second page might have a useful explanation but no link from the main service directory. Do not accept an unexplained count of optimized pages as the full deliverable. Ask which pages changed and what changed on each one. ## Name the content work Google's [SEO starter guide](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/fundamentals/seo-starter-guide), checked 2026.10.23, recommends helpful content, descriptive titles, and useful links. It explains that search snippets can come from page content and sometimes from the meta description. Do not let an optimization brief invent service areas, credentials, equipment, project results, or customer quotes. ## Define useful links Google's [link guidance](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/crawling-indexing/links-crawlable), checked 2026.10.23, recommends crawlable links and descriptive anchor text. It gives no ideal number of links per page. Ask the supplier to name the destination and purpose of each proposed link. A service page might link to an approved project example or an explanation of the inquiry process. Include a check that important pages have an incoming link. Keep technical implementation questions with the person responsible for the website. ## Define where on-page work stops Write down whether the engagement includes implementation or recommendations only. Also specify who handles redirects, templates, indexing restrictions, and form delivery. A content editor may identify those problems without owning the repair. An unresolved dependency should appear in the handover, with its owner and next action. It warns against guaranteed first-place rankings. Separate completion from subsequent search performance. A change can be verified before you have enough observations to judge its effect. ## Request a handover you can inspect Ask for the approved copy, changed URLs, before-and-after evidence, and a list of open issues. Keep the website files and account access under your control. For a first project, propose a small approved page set with explicit acceptance checks.
