# Choose Obsidian or Roam Research by where an AI can reach your notes.

Roam Research made bidirectional links and graph-based notes popular. Obsidian took those ideas, stored the notes as local files, and added a plugin system. Now an AI model needs to read your knowledge base, and the two designs give it very different routes in.

The deciding factor is storage. Roam keeps your graph in its cloud. Obsidian keeps your notes on your computer. For AI memory, that difference matters more than the graph structure.

This article compares the two as they stood when it was first written (January 2026). It ends with a portability test that you can run on your own graph.

## Know how Roam stores notes

Roam is an outliner with a graph database behind it. Every block is addressable, and every link works in both directions. The graph view shows how ideas connect.

Roam had no native AI integration in January 2026. The graph lives in Roam's cloud, in a proprietary database structure. An AI tool reaches it through a third-party route.

Three routes existed at that date:

- **Live AI Assistant.** A community extension that brings language model access into Roam blocks.
- **An MCP server.** A Model Context Protocol server lets assistants such as Claude work with a Roam graph through a standard interface. [Skywork: Roam Research MCP overview](https://skywork.ai/skypage/en/unlocking-second-brain-ai-engineer-roam-research/1980889424461492224)
- **Automation platforms.** Zapier and Lindy AI can connect Roam to AI services.

The MCP route gave the most direct access. It is still an adapter between a cloud database and the model. Roam was not designed for file-level AI access.

## Know how Obsidian stores notes

Obsidian stores notes as Markdown files in a folder on your computer. Any AI tool that reads local files can read the vault without a special integration.

An open-source repository, `kepano/obsidian-skills`, holds agent skills for Obsidian vault formats. You copy the repository contents into a `.claude` folder at the vault root, and Claude Code gets instructions for vault files.

The main Obsidian AI plugins changed little from 2025:

- Smart Connections, for semantic search that finds related notes, with a free offline version and a paid advanced tier;
- Copilot, a chat interface inside Obsidian;
- AI Assistant, with direct access to Claude, GPT, and other models;
- Text Generator, for text generation with OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, and local models.

The plugins are secondary. File access is the main advantage. When notes are Markdown files, the model reads them as written. For the broader argument, read [why plain text is the durable layer for AI memory](/articles/plain-text-ai-memory).

## Weigh graph detail against readability

Roam's graph is more granular than Obsidian's file-and-link structure. Every Roam block has a unique identifier, and you can reference any block anywhere. The connections are explicit.

Obsidian links whole files with wiki links, and the graph emerges from those links. It is less granular and more portable.

A model reads text in order. It does not resolve block references the way Roam's interface does. When Claude Code reads an Obsidian vault, it sees whole documents with headings, lists, and links. A Roam export, by contrast, can contain block references that point to text elsewhere in the graph. A model that reads only the exported page sees the reference, not the text.

Roam's graph serves human thinking well. Obsidian's files serve machine reading well.

## Compare cloud and local storage

Roam is cloud-first. The graph lives on Roam's servers. You can export it as JSON or Markdown, but an export converts a database into files, and some graph connections do not carry over.

Obsidian is local-first. The vault lives on your computer. You can sync it through iCloud, Dropbox, or Obsidian Sync, and the local copy remains the source of truth. If Obsidian stopped development, the files would still open in any text editor.

For AI memory, this is the main difference. Local files allow direct AI access. Cloud storage needs an adapter. To see what you keep if a cloud tool goes away, run the [ownership test for AI memory](/articles/do-you-own-ai-memory).

| Factor | Roam Research | Obsidian |
|---|---|---|
| Storage | Cloud, proprietary graph database | Local Markdown files |
| AI integration in January 2026 | Community extension, MCP server, automation platforms | Agent skills repository, plugins, direct file reads |
| Graph structure | Block-level bidirectional links | File-level wiki links |
| Readability for a model | Needs an adapter or an export | Direct file reads |
| Cost model | Paid subscription | Free app, optional paid Sync |
| Portability | Export to JSON or Markdown | Already Markdown files |
| Best fit | Graph-based thinking | AI memory |

## Test your graph's portability

Run this test before you decide. It shows how much of your graph survives the trip to an AI model.

1. Pick five Roam pages that you use for real work.
2. Export them as Markdown.
3. Open each exported file in a plain text editor.
4. Count the block references, which appear as `((uid))` strings, and the embeds.
5. Start a fresh AI session. Give it only the five exported files.
6. Ask one factual question and one relationship question for each page.
7. Mark each answer that failed because the needed text sat behind a reference.

For step 4, run this command in the export folder. It counts every `((uid))` string, including the ones inside embeds:

```
grep -o '(([^()]*))' *.md | wc -l
```

A high failure count means your graph depends on Roam's interface to make sense. Two responses fit that result. You can stay in Roam and use the MCP route, which resolves references through the tool. Or you can rewrite key pages as documents with the referenced text inline.

A low failure count means your pages already read well as files. A move to Obsidian would cost little. For a structured move out of a vendor store, see the [guide to leaving vendor AI memory](/articles/leaving-vendor-ai-memory-guide).

## Move the pages that an AI needs first

You do not need to move the whole graph at once. Move the pages that an AI task reads every week, and leave the rest in Roam until a task needs it.

1. List the recurring AI tasks, such as a client update or a proposal draft.
2. For each task, list the Roam pages that it depends on.
3. Export those pages as Markdown into a new Obsidian vault.
4. Replace each `((uid))` block reference with the text it points to. The method follows this list.
5. Check every image link. An exported link can still point to storage that Roam hosts, so download each image into the vault.
6. Add a short context file that names the pages each task reads.
7. Run the portability test again on the moved pages.

To find the text behind a reference, also export the graph as JSON. In that export, each block carries its `uid` and its text in a `string` field. This `jq` command prints the text for one UID:

```
jq -r '.. | objects | select(.uid? == "abc123def") | .string' graph.json
```

Paste the output in place of the reference. Repeat for each reference that the moved pages contain.

Keep one rule while both tools are in use. Each fact has one home. If a client fact lives in the vault, delete or mark the Roam copy as archived, so that two versions cannot drift apart.

## Choose by your main goal

Keep Roam if you depend on its outliner and graph views. The MCP route gives an AI working access to the graph. It has limits, but it works.

Choose Obsidian if your main goal is a knowledge base that gives an AI persistent context. The model reads the vault directly, with no export conversion and no adapter in the middle. The context window still limits how much one session can read, so give each job a defined set of files. The [Obsidian business memory guide](/articles/obsidian-ai-memory-for-business) shows how to scope those files.
