Keep “no matches” distinct from “search could not load.” Use this brief for a small business service, product, or resource search. The examples are proposed interface wording, with no claim about conversion gains. ## Distinguish the states before writing the message Ask the implementer to list the search states the site can detect. Review initial loading, successful matches, zero matches, and a failed request separately. | State | Proposed message | Next action | | --- | --- | --- | | Search completed with no matches | No results for your search | Edit the query or review filters | | Filters exclude all matches | No results with these filters | Remove or reset selected filters | | Search request failed | Search could not load | Retry or use navigation | | No search entered | Search our services | Enter a service or browse categories | Do not imply the business lacks a service merely because the search request failed. Keep availability claims tied to actual service or inventory information. ## Preserve the question and explain active filters Keep the entered words visible for editing. Show which filters are active and let visitors remove them deliberately. Propose a reset control that explains its effect. Decide whether it clears filters, the query, or both. Offer a service index or relevant category when it helps the visitor continue. ## Make dynamic status information available W3C identifies “No results returned” as an example of a status message when it appears dynamically without changing context. Ask the implementer to explain how the completion message is announced and how keyboard focus behaves. Test a finished search separately from its loading state. Do not judge the state solely by a screenshot of the empty panel. ## Offer help without inventing availability Provide a contact route for a visitor who cannot locate the right service. Explain that sending a question starts an inquiry rather than confirming availability. Use plain draft wording such as “Cannot find the service? Ask us about your request.” Have the receiving team approve it. Avoid automatically replacing a zero-result state with unrelated promotions. Keep navigation labels specific enough to describe the linked page. ## Test recovery with known examples Prepare a query with a known match, one with no match, a restrictive filter combination, and a failed-request scenario. Use only test material you control. Check that editing and resetting return the visitor to a usable search. Follow each fallback link and confirm any contact route reaches its intended recipient.
